The Vampire Diaries is a show on the CW, based off of a book series by L.J. Smith.

It stars Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder as Elena, Stefan and Damon.

The show begins the school year after Elena and her brother's parents die in a car accident. As they readjust to life living with their aunt, a new guy appears at their school. (Yeah. I'm not really sure how to summarize this. haha)

I'm about halfway through the first season. While the show does glamorize vampires, it's not overly dramatic or overly sexual. There is some gore. You see a fair amount of blood and you hear a heck of a lot of screaming.

I'm liking it so far, but I'm going to wait until the end of the season to decide what I think about this show.

I haven't read the books.

I haven't seen the show, nor read the books. My friend who is doing both said that they are completely different. "The only thing they kept were the names." He likes it.....or liked it, I haven't asked for a recent update on his opinion.
Who is your favorite character so far?

When I first watched the pilot episode I was so lost. They totally left out another character in the books, and Elena had a sister not a teenage brother. They also havae Stephan living alone when in the book he's renting a room from this old lady.
Once I figured out what was going on I didn't think it was so bad. I personaly would have liked it if they would have kept some of the characters the same, but I can see why they changed them. At least they got good actors. I love Ian Somerhalder
So far I like it.

That's Interesting. I read on L.J. smiths's website that even though the show's plot is completely different, she's still happy with how it turned out.

It would have been more interesting if Elena had a sister in the show. Jeremy's kind of boring.

Keep watching the show. He starts off being rather boring but... at least he grew on me. razz

As for my own opinion of the series, quite frankly, I haven't read the book. I started off watching the series. After a few episodes, someone suggested that I read the books, and I picked it up from my boyfriend's shelves while I was waiting for him. I read the first chapter only to find out that it was completely different, and that I didn't feel like the book characters were as likeable. (Most likely just because I didn't give them any time to become so.) So I decided to give before I got confused with character names being the same and the rest being completely different. I might pick it up someday, when I'll be done with the whole tv series. For now, I'm addicted to the tv show and keeping it at that.

The books are quite good, unfortunately the series never has ended and it's doubtful that it will. It makes me wonder if the t.v. series will.
