The time setting is present, but that does not mean you can't have an old character or have a older style lifestyle. Even more futuristic setting are welcome. Stickies are places where everyone can post together, Announcements are reserved for guild lines and rules, and everything else is for owners and slaves alone. Meaning, you and your slave/owner post there and no one else unless another owner is coming to visit.

@ Owners:
You will need to make a house once or before picking out a slave, the outside, your room and the room of your slave are nice touches so we have an idea of what the place looks like. Only the places where different people post together are stickied, the rest are just normal topics.

@ Slaves:
You are only allowed to post yourself in the market, and the house of your owner unless they take you with them somewhere. Say, to the store or out to the park. As this part of the guild picks up, I will add more to the stickied area.
