I heard the long, distant song of too-quiet stars. It's the song of life which fades out then is reborn. HEY! I'm updating the Ninja Skies Universe! (about damn time)
This story starts about three months after the Wedding event in the RP of Ninja skies, and will deal with the long-running plot line that I had originally wanted to do with that.
Incidentally, I will be restarting the RP, but at a more casual format than I originally had. SO after I get some of the events into a Memories subforum, I'll get that started.
Enjoy! Always, always So we can love each other, so that we'll never forget the sadness of the wind and the birds and the sky, we start our journey.

Chapter One
The air was thick with the scent of the blossoms that were on the trees, all of different fruits that were also strangely ripening on the same branches of the flowers. Even stranger were the small golden birds that were flitting around the orchard, their feathers seeming to be made of fire that didn’t burn themselves or the plants.
Yet the strangest sight in this orchard was the small girl with fiery golden wings that sat in the boughs of one of the trees, her autumn golden hair flowing down past her shoulders, the soft curls intertwining with light blue petals the same color of the simple sleeveless dress that she was wearing. She watched the birds with gentle sapphire eyes set in a pale face, and when she spoke, it was with a hauntingly beautiful melodious voice.
How long she had been alone here she couldn’t say, just that she was placed there a few days after her creation, kept far away from the Holy War her family waged against the forces of Chaos that laid just across the River. For what reason she didn’t know, nor did she know why it was that hardly any of her siblings came to this forest except for during the new moon, when they needed the ambrosia that grew here to sustain their power, and even then, it was only the second youngest that came, quickly collecting the fruit from her and then disappearing back towards the Palace of Crystal where six of her seven siblings lived with Cosmos.
Still, she preferred the quiet warmth of the Orchard of Life to the cold bright glare of the Palace, and often she would step down from these holy trees to step into the forest that surrounded them, singing softly to the animals and birds as she used her magic to heal what harm had been brought by the Holy War, straying very close to the River itself, but never close enough that she would be caught in the battle she did not understand.
Was it not the duty of Light to guide? She couldn’t comprehend why those kept in the Dark deserved nothing but the hate and contempt of her siblings and Mother.
A sharp trilling from one of the golden birds broke her train of thought and she held her bare arms out to him, listening as he sung his news, telling her of someone injured wandering in the forest.
He flew away and she jumped down, gracefully floating towards the edge of the woods.
Pale pre-dawn light streamed into the small room of the airship’s inn, and the woman sat up, rubbing sleep from her eyes as she slowly swung her legs around, getting up to do her morning routine as she went to the window and opened it, singing the softest of songs as she did so, one full of love and hope, though there was an underlying bittersweet feeling deep within it, a sort of sorrow that she did not have as a child.
How long had it been since the wedding of Shane and Naruto, the fight between brothers that occurred on what was supposed to be the happiest of days? Three months? Almost four? And right after…
She closed her eyes, her hand on her growing abdomen, a secret only known to a few on the ship, “He’ll be back here soon,” she whispered as she blinked back the worried tears, “It’s just a mission to see if we can receive an ally in Haru’s old home.” a flash of tawny feathers flew past her as the sun started to rise, circling the room once before landing on her arm, and she gave a brief smile to the small owl that had taken over her duties as messenger to the Suna airship, “What news do you bring us Tokei?” she asked as she closed the window and turned to the affectionate raptor, scratching his crown as she took the tube from his leg before he flew off to the rafters.
“I better get down to the tavern and give this to Mira then,” she said gently as she laid the tube on her table and went to get out her clothing.
An few minutes later, she stepped on the last stair to the restaurant area of The Haven, the small inn and tavern that was run by the fiery haired woman that was currently serving breakfast to the early risers of Danshoku, “Phoe!” she said breathlessly as she saw the Eidolon, “Glad to see you, we’re a bit busier than usual this morning!”
The message waited until the morning rush was done, it was another hour or so before both women sat down at the bar panting, “I swear, I’m beginning to regret letting Katami go with those kids to their home, no matter how much safer it was for him,” Mira sighed, “I really liked having a pair of extra hands around.”
“Perhaps we should hire someone,” Phoenix suggested as she pulled out the tube, “Tokei brought this earlier.”
“You know, we’re going to have to tell your brothers why you haven’t been turning into your wren form and why that ruby that binds you is around your neck and not mine,” she pointed out as she took the message, “At least Tokei we can explain because of that bounty of mine being tripled and it’s just plain not safe for either of us outside Danshoku, but…” her voice trailed off as she pointed at the Eidolon’s stomach, “That’s going to get noticeable soon too.”
“I know,” she sighed as she rested her head in her hands as Mira read the note, “But they have made their feelings regarding Beloved very clear. I’m not sure what they’ll do in reaction to the news.”
“Welp, good news is that the baby pretty much proves what you’ve been saying all along,” she held up the note and summoned a flame to burn it, “So don’t worry about it so much. Now help me get the room next to yours ready, Gaara’s sending a diplomat to seal the treaties between our villages.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The red-haired medic wrinkled her nose as she entered the tea shop, “Just what is it that he’s brewing?” she asked cautiously of the tall dark haired bird man that was lounging in two chairs near the entrance.
“Don’t know, don’t care. He’s been ignoring me while working on whatever it is,” Hayato yawned, “Going to make him pay for that too.”
“Yuko!” the silver haired man called out happily as he peeked from the back kitchen, “You came to pick up your daily order of Silver Mist right? I’ve got a new tea too!”
“It’s not what’s causing that smell is it?” she asked as she took out the money to pay for her order.
Kaze blinked at her for a second, “Smell? OH! No, that’s the special order that I’m working on. I doubt that it’ll work though,” he smiled as he handed her the packets of tea, “Make sure to come again!”
She smiled and walked briskly out of the shop, “Who the hell made a special order?” Hayato asked as he stretched, “I don’t remember it.”
“I got it when I was working in the morgue,” Kaze explained as he went to the back, “I just can’t seem to get it right though, maybe some more eye of newt…”
Hayato stared wide-eyed at him, then shook his head and went back to pretending to be asleep, “Don’t know, not sure if I want to know. So long as he’s not blowing himself up…”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Have you thought about keeping your cat indoors?” Neji asked of Kotetsu and Izumo as they stood at the head of the missions board line with their three year old daughter in tow, “This is the fifth time this month that she’s wandered off!”
“Someone keeps scaring her,” Izumo said as he signed the paperwork for the request, ignoring his partner’s sheepish look, “And Kozumi would know if we got a replacement.”
“I was only showing her my…” Kotetsu started, then closed his mouth at Izumo’s glare, “How much to put up the posters?”
“Fifty ryo. Though I swear if this happens again, I’m raising the price,” Neji sighed as he waved them away, “Next.”
He blinked as the next person came to his table, “Lee?”
“I want to advertise my new dojo!” he said excitedly, “I finally got it going!” his eyes sparkled, “Now to find the joyous students that will…”
“Fifty ryo,” Neji said quickly as he handed a form to Lee, “And turn that in once you complete it,” he narrowed his eyes, “And no. I’m not joining.”
“Seems like a bit much for people who want to put up posters,” Jiraiya said as he stood next to Kakashi near the back of the missions board, “I take it something happened when I was out.”
“It was pretty much a prank war in the plaza,” Kakashi shrugged, “But it got a little out of hand, so now anyone who needs to use the square’s board for anything has to fill out a form and pay for it. The costs are still going to pay back the clean up and damages done.”
The sage whistled, “And I bet it was started just to relieve the tension of waiting on the enemies of this place to make their move.”
“Any reason why they’ve been quiet lately?” the jonin asked, “It’s not like Danzo to wait for anything.”
“There’s a spy here, at least one,” he answered, “They’re waiting on just the right information to get passed to them. Though what exactly that is, I have no clue. Kiri and Kumo are still closing themselves off, though there’s a rumor that the Mizukage will form a treaty with whoever finds her sister, and the Raikage will do the same for whoever produces those two missing scientists.”
“Iwa still with Konoha?”
“The Tsuchikage wasn’t given much choice in the matter. At least that treaty with Suna is finally being completed here. I was worried when their council started giving Gaara a hard time about it.”
“Now it’s just a matter of getting to the minor villages before any of them do,” he narrowed his eyes, “That’s easier said than done though.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Haru knelt down as he steered the scythe turned air board down towards the airspace around the great waterfall that hid the entrance to the cave that hid the ship-village that he had grown up, “Brings back memories doesn’t it?” he muttered as he ran a hand through his hair, memories of why he had left in the first place quickly coming back to him.
Still… he was the only one in Danshoku that knew the particulars about this village. If anyone could convince the new leadership here that Konoha, at least the way it was running now, was a bad choice for treaties, it would be him. In his pouch was a scroll from the only other possible candidate for this mission, he hoped that between him and Naruto, he would at least get an audience with the council.
It was a dim hope, and as soon as he saw the cannons tucked around the waterfall, he knew that it was one that wasn’t going to pan out very well. Don’t come out. We might stand a chance if we can convince them we’re just a simple messenger, there aren’t many that would recognize me anyways.
It’s only been five or so years. Maybe they forgot all about it. Sin’s voice dripped with a heavier than usual dose of sarcasm, Fine. I’ll be good. Just don’t get us killed before I get back to Phoe or I will take complete control.
I could point out the faulty logic behind that… Haru started, then shook his head as he brought his concentration to the situation at hand, already a masked guard was coming to greet him, and he pulled out the scroll and the insignia for Danshoku’s messenger corps.
Pleasantries were exchanged, and the messenger took the scroll back to the ones behind the waterfall, ordering Haru to wait where he was.
Emerald eyes warily eyed the cannons, “Now the questions are whether or not they remember and whether or not they already forged a treaty with Danzo,” he muttered.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Phoenix sat on the netting leading up to the mast as she sang in her soft voice, looking out with worried sapphire eyes towards the northeast.
“Hey Sunshine, you’re not scared for him are you?” a voice called up and she looked down to see the grinning blonde woman with her hair in four pigtails, “Mira said you were up here.”
“Temari!” she said as she floated down, “What are you doing here?”
“Who the hell did you think baby brother was going to leave as diplomat?” she pulled at the other woman’s cheeks, “Gaara’s finalizing the treaty now, but I was told to go ahead and make myself comfortable. And why the hell haven’t you told your brothers yet! Do you know how much I wanted to beat Naruto for asking why I had gotten fat?!”
“I’m shorry!” Temari let go and she rubbed the sides of her face, “I’ll tell them tomorrow alright?”
“Better,” she crossed her arms, “Now exactly how much power can you use right now, because I have this brilliant idea on how to get…”
Phoenix sighed, “I think it was your last brilliant idea that got us both in this predicament. Besides, there’s no reason to try and push those two together,” she took her hand, “Come on, I’ll show you to your room.”
“So, when is he due back anyways?”
“Sometime within the next week or so,” she chewed her lip, “I just have a bad feeling, I wish I could place my finger on why though. It’s not just anxiety from being parted from Beloved, there’s something else, something ominous.”
Temari shrugged as they entered the ship proper, heading for The Haven, “Sounds to me like you’re just being paranoid. It’s a dangerous job that he and I… and any of the rest of us on the Hidden Ships have. He’ll be fine and we’ll both be teasing you again before you know it.”

Chapter Two
Phoenix shot up out of the bed, tears in her eyes as she tried to calm down her quickly beating heart, fearfully recalling the nightmares of her fitful slumber, dreams of flying fire and falling…
“He’s in danger,” she whispered, “I can heal… but only if I can get to him,” she paced back and forth in her room, wringing her hands, “Temari can’t come, she’s a diplomat, but if I tell her that I’m…”
She stopped, fists clenched, and nodded to herself, “I won’t give her a choice. I’ll leave before she rises,” she glanced out the window, noting that it was still deep night, and went to gather her things needed for the trip.
Quickly but quietly heading down the stairs, she peeked around to the bar, noting that the only ones there were engrossed in the karaoke contest, and swiftly ducked into the kitchen, breathing a sigh of relief when she found it empty.
“I’ll be back soon,” she whispered, leaving a sealed scroll next to the recipe box on Mira’s table, and then opening the back door that went into the ally behind the Haven, headed down the passage to the harbor, not noticing the owl that followed after her.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“You’d think that at some point he would figure out how to file the paperwork,” Saisei sighed as he locked the main office building and turned to Odin, “Come on, we’re finally done with all of this.”
“They’re still on honeymoon even if they did just get back,” the smaller Eidolon pointed out cheerfully, “You can’t expect them to worry about anything in the height of their happiness. Enough bad stuff has happened already.”
His brother glared at him, “Doesn’t do any good if Danshoku gets ruined because he ignores it for something like that. Besides, there’s a war coming,” he smirked, “And from the reports we’ve gotten there are some of Them on that side. I’m looking forward to…”
“What’s Sister doing out this late?” Odin suddenly asked, and Saisei whipped his attention to the direction that his brother was staring in wonderment, towards the autumn haired woman that was seemingly sneaking through the plaza, “It looks like she’s going somewhere too,” he added pointing at the satchel being carried over her shoulder.
Without another word to him, the elder of the two flew over to her, cutting off her path. “It’s strange to see you traveling in that form Sister,” he said quietly, “Come to think of it, I haven’t seen you in your bird form for a long time now.”
“Let me through,” she answered, “I have to reach him.”
His eyes flashed with anger, “You still choose that thing after all this time? I thought that prison would have cured you of that. Why do you insist on betraying us?”
“Because I haven’t,” she pinched the skin above her elbow, pulling out a brightly shining white-golden feather that shimmered with many other colors as she handed it to Saisei, “If I had, then this would be black, isn’t that what we were told at our creation? I propose a deal Brother.”
Odin had caught up to the two by then, “What is it?” he asked.
“I am going to him,” her sapphire eyes turned sorrowful, “He and Haru are both in danger, that much I can tell. If by doing so, I truly turn into what you fear, and that feather turns black, then you may kill me as I return to the harbor, even before if you like,” she placed a hand on her abdomen, “But if it stays the same feather of light that it is now, then you give up your hatred for the father of my child, and show this one none of that ill-contempt.”
Both of her brothers’ eyes widened at that, “You’re…” Saisei started.
“It’s impossible,” whispered Odin, “Only Mother could have created life, you…” he placed his hand over hers, “It’s true,” he said after a moment, then looked back up to her, “An Eidolon other than Cosmos is bringing life into the world. Saisei, this changes things.”
“This changes nothing,” he snapped, then held up the feather, “I’ll be watching it closely Sister. When it loses it light and turns black, I’m coming for you, you won’t get a chance to return,” with that he whirled around, stomping towards his home.
“Hurry,” Odin said, “The harbor’s guard is changing soon, you won’t be able to…” he chewed his lip and pulled out a scroll, pressing it into her hands, “Wait, use this. That way you won’t have to sing anyone to sleep and leave us open to attack.”
“Brother…”
He smiled at her, “No matter who the father is, a new life is worth protecting. And even though I can’t understand why you chose that one, I don’t agree with Saisei that you betrayed us; it’s just the way that you are,” he chewed the inside of his cheek, “Come back soon. I want to see the miracle when it happens.”
She smiled, “Take care of him,” she said gently, “Even when we lived on the moon, your red string bound you there,” with that, she hefted her satchel and ran towards the harbor.
A slight blush was on his face as he watched her leave, the tawny owl still flying after her, before he nodded to himself and turned to follow Saisei.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Elsewhere on the ship, there was a light on in the medical center as Yuko sipped her tea, looking through the reports on her desk.
A tapping came to her window, and she got up, unlocking the window and not looking at the crow that flew into her office, nor to the dark haired man that appeared as it landed on her floor, “I don’t have anything to tell,” she said quietly.
“You should be more careful,” Itachi answered, lifting up a file on her desk and flipping through it, “You aren’t the only spy here remember?”
Her fists clenched, “I don’t even know what to do anymore. I’m tired of stepping on…” she sighed wearily, “Does he suspect anything?”
“Of course he does, luckily, he has other things to worry about than his spies here,” he looked up at her, “How are you feeling?”
She crossed her arms over her swollen abdomen, “Exhausted, I’m going to be going on leave soon,” she chewed her lip, “Are you still going ahead with your plan?”
“Even with this new life?” he smiled sadly, turning his attention back down to the report, “Sasuke is meeting me at the old clan seat. I intend to fully carry my burden until the end.”
“But…” she went over to him, grabbing his shoulders, “It wasn’t just you! Tell him about the execution method, the coup, Madara… you have to make him understand why!”
He shook his head, placing the file down, “It’s better that he never knows any of that, that he thinks I am the monster he believes me to be.”
“He’ll be coming back to this place,” she whispered, “His travel companion works here, he’ll notice that our son…”
He wiped the tears from her eyes, “You can tell our son everything, on the condition that you make him promise not to hate his uncle. This all was my plan, to make Sasuke a hero that redeems the Uchiha name.”
“But what if…” her voice cracked.
“Then our son will have to redeem it,” he kissed her forehead, “I refuse to let Madara win,” he sighed, “I need to be getting back now, shall I tell Sasori the usual about there being a bit of restlessness here?”
She swallowed hard, “No,” she clenched her fists, “There’s something else that he would be interested in.”
“You realize what it is that you’re telling him?”
“That’s the thing, she’ll forgive me, and it’s about to become public knowledge anyways,” she said bitterly, “If he finds out from another source, then he’ll know for a fact that I’m having second thoughts and you won’t be coming to receive my reports anymore,” she gave him the medical file that he had placed down a moment before, “Tell him I wanted to be sure that it was past the danger point before I reported.”
“Even if this is the last time we’re seeing each other anyways?” he asked quietly, “You’re sure of this?”
“Let me have that small bit of hope that it isn’t true,” she answered, “I want to think that you’ll survive the illness and the battle,” she closed her eyes as he placed his hand on her cheek, felt his lips on hers one last time…
A slight change of the wind and she opened her eyes to find that he was gone, vanished into the night. Blinking back tears, she went to close the window, then placing away the files on her desk, locked her office and walked out the medical center and into the plaza.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kaze frowned as he studied the dark sludgy contents of the vial that was sitting on the lab table in front of him, “It’s going to taste horrible,” he said to the shadow that entered the lab behind him, “But it should work.”
“This is how you did it the last time?” pale fingers picked up the vial.
“That time I actually was there, this was a bit of a difficult request,” he sighed, then held up a finger, “And it won’t be exactly like that one, you’ll be sealed in whatever it is that you choose. The last ingredient will be a part taken from that. Add it, then drink the whole thing right before you face him. After you die in that battle…” his voice trailed off, “It won’t be pleasant, and might take some getting used to.”
“All I need to do then is complete my payment.”
Kaze brought out a scroll and unfurled it, “Aim it here,” he said pointing at the sealing circle in the center, “All three of them.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Stay still Big Brother,” a hauntingly melodic voice said and he felt small hands place themselves on the wounds on his chest.
And then there was a soft singing and a feeling of brightness, of love and light that was foreign to him, he opened his dark eyes to see bright sapphire eyes framed by shining autumn golden hair…
“Uhnn,” he groaned, as emerald eyes opened to find himself lying on a cot in a cave, his body wracked with pain, “What happened?”
“Five of the six cannons shot at you,” a voice said and Haru turned his head to see a dark haired man sitting with crossed arms next to him a pointed flail seemingly coming from his back curled next to him, “The only reason the sixth didn’t shoot was because I was the one manning it, and you’re lucky that it was one of the bottom ones, I was able to grab you before anyone noticed.”
“What’s the damage?” he asked, mentally trying to figure that out himself.
“The usual, broken ribs, shattered limbs, a few holes in you that weren’t there before,” he stood, “Why’d you come back?”
“Besides the treaty proposal, there was something I wanted to tell you,” his hand, one of the few parts of his body not completely bandaged up, was gently picked up by the man, “You look good Chain.”
“You look like hell. I thought Sin was going to take over if you got too stupid,” Chain sighed, “You realize that even if you do heal up, Jinxy’s going to beat you up again for even taking this chance.”
“Where’s my scythe?” he asked quietly.
“Destroyed. And you’re going back to sleep. I need to move you somewhere where they won’t find you,” he took a gas mask and placed it over Haru’s face, “Brings back some memories doesn’t it?”
He didn’t answer, he was already fading back into the dream-memories of the small winged girl dancing in the sun, memories he knew belonged to the demon that shared his body.
A small part of him wondered why he was able to see any of these scenes when for so long Sin had locked them away.

Chapter Three
Mira yawned as she entered the tavern, sighing as she saw the hawk man that was sleeping on her counter, an empty bottle in his hand and a full ashtray next to him, “Hayato wake up,” she said gently, moving behind the counter to start the coffee pot, “You can’t tell me that you left Kaze alone all night.”
“Go away,” he growled, “Or at least give me something for this headache,” he glared at her, “And if I so much as smell a hint of bacon or eggs or any of those other greasy breakfast foods, I’ll destroy your place.”
“Good morning to you too,” she said smiling as she placed a glass of water and some aspirin in front of him, “Dry toast coming right up,” she added as she went into the kitchen, going towards the pantry when the scroll next to her recipe box caught her eye.
A second later she was back in the bar, heading towards the inn, “My toast?” Hayato asked, then stared wide-eyed as she ignored the customers coming in, instead rushing upstairs to the room two doors down from her own.
Shaking his head, he took his aspirin and downed the water, leaving some money on the counter before heading out to see if Kaze had decided to come back home from whatever his work at the morgue was.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“It’s not possible,” Saisei crossed his arms as he stared at the feather, “Mother is the only one of us that can create life. She shouldn’t be able to…”
“She was created from Mother’s tear,” Odin said quietly, “Only our Eldest was there at the time, but we all know about it.”
“So, you were created from a drop of Mother’s blood shed in the battle, Asura came from the sound of one of Mother’s commands, neither of you ever created life,” the elder Eidolon snorted, “It shouldn’t matter.”
“That’s just it,” he argued, “All of us but Sister were created for the battle against them, she’s the only one that was made in what we all thought was Mother’s only weak moment, that’s why most of us avoided her, she was a reminder that even Cosmos wept at the ongoing war, even if it was just one tear,” he chewed his bottom lip, “Maybe that’s why she’s able to have a child. What if Mother gave up her creation powers and cast them out with that tear?”
“You’re bordering on blasphemy,” Saisei warned, and both looked up as they heard the crash upstairs, “And not a word to either of them about it,” he said as he stuffed the feather inside his shirt before the kitchen door opened and the dark haired man was dragged out by Shane.
“Last night never happened, got that?” the blond man said as he opened the door and threw the stranger out.
“Caught you at a bad time eh?” the other man smirked, “Still I was pretty surprised that the yaoi…”
“Out,” Shane said as he slammed the door, then sighed wearily as he ran a hand through his hair.
“There a reason why Naruto isn’t here?” Saisei asked as he raised an eyebrow, and his chosen whirled to see both of the Eidolons staring at him.
“s**t,” he walked out of the kitchen, “He was out catching up with a friend of his, I don’t give a damn.”
“But…” Odin started, then blinked as he felt Saisei’s hand on his forehead, the slight surge of light, and turned to his brother, blinking once more in confusion, “What were we talking about?”
“Sister betraying us,” Saisei said quietly, “Can you go and see if Naruto is still at the tea-shop he went to last night?”
Odin nodded cheerfully, “I hope that he didn’t end up talking all night and losing track of time. Wonder if he wants to get any ramen.”
He missed the look of worry that passed over Saisei’s face as he got up to leave, the quick glance up the stairs where Shane had gone, “Yeah, that sounds like a good idea.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Come on,” Naruto was saying as he leaned his head on his hands, “Just walk in there and ask her. I mean she came all that way for you when the Akatsuki…”
“And exactly when would I go on a ‘date’?” Gaara took a sip of his tea, “I leave for Suna in just a few hours, and won’t be coming back. If there wasn’t the treaty, I wouldn’t have been here in the first place. Kankuro will take over Temari’s duties when she goes on medical leave.”
The blond sighed, “How come you can’t visit? I mean, we’re officially allies now, there’s no real reason that you can’t. I get why she can’t go over there,” that point had taken the Kazekage a few hours to drill in, and was finally done with an exasperated statement about her being the only one that made ramen in Danshoku, “This was the first time I’ve seen you since I came here,” he glared at him, “And how come you got Kage before me?”
“Hard work and perseverance,” Gaara said quietly, “I put Suna above all other things, and that includes my personal life.”
“Or lack thereof,” Naruto grumbled as he crossed his arms.
“You and my siblings give similar speeches regarding this,” he pointed out as he rose, placing some money onto the table to pay for the tea, “However, I am meant to always be alone. She understands why.”
Odin entered the shop then, “”Here you are!” he smiled at Naruto, “I wanted to take you to get some ramen for breakfast,” he squeaked as the blond picked him up in a bone-crushing hug.
“He’s the perfect…” he started.
“I’ll go on ahead,” Gaara said as he walked out, “Mira needs a warning that the two of you are coming anyways.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Naruto and Odin chorused as the red-head gave them the briefest of smiles and shook his head.
“Oh man! What time is it?” the blond suddenly yelped, “Don’t tell me I’ve been out all night?” he chewed his bottom lip, “I better get Shane something real nice to make up for that.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The tavern was surprisingly quiet for this time of day as Gaara stepped through the doors, looking in surprise at Temari and Mira who were in quiet discussion at the counter.
“She’ll be fine,” Mira was saying quietly, “I mean, she’s a goddess of sorts right? It’s not like she hasn’t traveled the sky seas by herself.”
“Back then she had most of her powers,” Temari growled as she picked at her rice, “She’s lost a good deal of them for the time being and I had her help me make these yesterday evening with the few that were left,” she twirled one of two glass bracelets on the table, “You know how hard it was to even sneak…”
“What happened?” Gaara asked quietly as he sat down next to his sister.
“Phoenix went out late last night,” the fiery haired woman went to get him something to eat, “She said in the note that she left that Haru and Sin were in danger.”
“And while we can assume that she went towards Taki, we don’t know exactly what route she used,” his sister sighed, “Even if I did follow her now, there’s no guarantee that I would catch up.”
“That and you have responsibilities as diplomat here,” he said as he folded his hands, “And what are these?” he nodded at the bracelets.
“She and I brainstormed on how to keep the line of communications open with your spy here,” she thumbed at Mira, “So these, you put on one and she puts on the other, and you guys can talk without being eavesdropped on, even across the sky seas,” she grinned, “Genius huh?”
“What’s the catch?” Gaara and Mira asked dryly, then she hit her fist, “Tokei! He’s gone too, so maybe he went after her!”
“The owl’s supposed to make me feel better?” Temari raised an eyebrow.
“Not just an owl, Haru’s summon,” Gaara pointed out, “And one that has been ordered to take her to their realm if anything should happen.”
His sister stared at him, “And how do you know that?”
“That makes me feel a little better at least,” Mira said as she took one of the bracelets and placed it on her wrist, “Shoot, I need to get the noodles going, the rest of the breakfast rush will be coming soon. Hopefully I didn’t chase them all off this morning,” she walked back to the kitchen.
Gaara played with the other bracelet, “I used to have a relationship with Haru, remember?”
“So why tell you and not me?” she crossed her arms, “Or is this part of why you shipped me out here for diplomat duty? You’re both trying to protect me.”
“Something like that,” he rose, placing the bracelet in his pocket, “Tell her that I said good-bye.”
She smiled, “That only works if you wear it,” she teased before returning to her breakfast.
“This wouldn’t have anything to do with the missing liter of sand from my gourd now would it?” he asked as he left the tavern, ignoring her sheepish guilty look.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Phoenix narrowed her eyes as she steered the small boat through the clouds, “It’s colder up here,” she said to the tawny owl perched on the bow, “But we can get through Konoha’s airspace much quicker and without being seen,” she chewed the inside of her cheek, “I hope.”
She touched the ruby around her neck, trying to draw out any reserves that might have been kept in the gem from her imprisonment, and looking up as the boat peeked out over the clouds and basked in the sun.
“It’s risky, but I’ll need everything I can get,” she whispered, then closed her eyes and let white-golden wings unfurl from her back, as she started to sing.
Beneath her, still hiding in the cloud cover, a dark shadow drew closer, seemingly biding it’s time to strike.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Itachi stared at the black feather for a long moment before dropping it into the vial, watching it dissolve into the thick liquid.
Footsteps sounded on the stairs behind him, and he nodded to himself as he recognized the chakra signature of his brother, and raised the strange potion to his lips, drinking the whole thing in one gulp, and resisting the urge to spit it all back out, “He wasn’t kidding,” he muttered before composing himself and going to sit in the throne, smashing the empty vial on the ground as he did so.
Sasuke reached the last step, and Itachi looked up at him, “So brother, we meet again…” he resisted the urge to give him a sorrowful smile, “You’ve gotten taller.”

Chapter Four
“I really screwed up,” Naruto moaned into his ramen, “I only meant to be gone an hour or so, not all night.”
“Don’t worry about it,” Mira said as she brought him out another bowl, “Just get him something nice and apologize, and I’m sure that it’ll be alright.”
“But I don’t have any money!” he cried, “I haven’t done any missions in forever, and everything I had saved up I spent on souvenirs during our honeymoon.”
“And ramen,” Odin supplied, “You paid off your tab here remember?”
“You know, if you really wanted a job or something, Mira could use some help here,” Temari said from her spot at the counter, “Phoe’s gone out for a while.”
“Weren’t you going to a doctor’s appointment?” Mira said as she took up the blonde woman’s plate, “And you need to report to the academy after that,” she turned to Naruto, “She’s right though, I’m hiring if you’re looking for a job. It’ll be long hours though, you sure Shane will be alright with that?”
He gulped the last of his noodles, and grinned, “I’ll ask about it after I apologize. If I start saving now, I can get him something really good for his birthday.”
“That answers my next question,” she breathed a sigh of relief, “If I had to pay you in ramen, I don’t think I would make my profit margins.”
“I want to work too,” Odin said quietly, and the others turned to look at him in surprise as he blushed, “I think that maybe there’s something in this place that Sister was trying to tell us.”
Mira smiled, “If you still haven’t gotten what Phoe was saying, then you may not get it working here, but sure, I can use all the help I can get. I’m only going to use you part-time though.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Your broken bones have mended at least,” Chain said as he looked over Haru’s vitals, “That’s the good thing about having Sin in you, but other than that, you’re still pretty bad off.”
“I kinda figured that from the annoying gut-wrenching pain,” the blue-haired nin groaned, “And let me guess, the old woman sent over some medicine?”
“It’s not so bad,” the dark-haired man said as he poured some green liquid into a bowl of soup, “The hard part is going to be sneaking you out and back to that refuge of yours.”
“So what’s the situation here? Taki decided to keep it’s neutrality or something?” he grimaced as Chain slowly poured the soup down his throat.
“The tree is dying,” he ignored Haru’s wide-eyed stare at that, “Possibly with the destruction of the last of the hero water, but we’re not sure. The council is not allowing anyone in, they don’t want this information getting out, because once it does…”
“Taki will be open for attack from the skies,” Haru said quietly, “The waterfall entrance won’t do any good then.”
“It’s a good thing that you showed up,” Chain looked over at him, “Because according to what the council did find, there’s a way to heal the tree. That same thing that Sin was searching for.”
A moment passed where Haru blinked in confusion, trying to think of what he meant, then he suddenly sat up, ignoring the pain, “The ruby?!”
He nodded, “There’s already an expedition out to search for it, but they don’t know about her being freed from it, they’re basing all their information on legends that started from Tsubasa.”
“Where the cripples walked again and the blind could see, and even death was almost eradicated… until the village was destroyed and the holy artifact lost forever,” Haru laid back in the bunk, “Until a small girl picked it up.”
“I’ll take you to Danshoku myself,” Chain said, “I figured that if I ask in person…”
“Phoe wouldn’t turn you down anyways,” he promised, “It’s just the way she is.” Pain shot through him, and Chain went to change the bandages that were soaking with blood.
“We can’t go anywhere until you heal anyways,” he said quietly.
Haru wondered if he imagined that sense of dread in his longtime friend’s voice as he fell back into a dreamless sleep…
Not quite dreamless, there was the softest sound of singing…
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Do you sing for the dawn or does the dawn come because you sing?” the silver haired man asked with an amused look in his onyx eyes as he watched the girl’s dress change along with the lightening sky, her wings turning more golden, her dress slowly turning pink as the sun in the east rose, becoming stronger as her voice did.
The song ended and she turned to him, “All Children of Light can bring in the sun and the moon and the stars,” she said smiling at him, her hands behind her back, “It is our duty to be beacons in the dark night.”
“I have been fighting against the forces on this side of the river for a long time,” he said quietly, “And I can honestly say that I have never heard of any of your siblings bringing in the light in this manner. Not even Leviathan who was the warden of this forest once.”
“I don’t understand,” she said as she knelt down next to him, “Why can our families not coexist? The forest here needs the cool of the dark as much as the warmth of the light. One cannot enjoy the stars during the day, it is only at night that we can see their shine,” she chewed her lip, “Why must there be a war?”
He stared at her for a moment, searching the sapphire eyes for any sign that she was joking with him, and when he found none, a slow smile appeared on his lips, “Perhaps that’s why not one of your siblings can sing in the sunrise. They don’t understand the purpose of the Dark.”
She blinked at him in confusion, “Big Brother?”
“You know that I am not of your family, and yet you still call me that,” he brushed a strand of her autumn golden hair behind her pale ear, “Little Star, don’t lose this warmness. I couldn’t stand it if your light became as cold and harsh as your mother’s. The dawn will never come again if that happened.”
Her eyes opened at the sound of Tokei’s wings flapping, and Phoenix sat up, “I’m awake,” she mumbled at him, then blinked as she noticed the position of the sun, “It’s already late in the afternoon,” she said as she went to starboard to look at her position, “And it seems that we’re over half-way through Konoha’s airspace,” she said happily, “We’ll be in Taki before moon-rise…” her voice trailed off as she noticed the shadow in the clouds beneath her.
She glanced quickly back up at the sun, “That’s a ship from the Akatsuki,” she whispered, “And there isn’t much time left, after the sun sets I’ll have a more limited supply of power.”
Tokei flapped his wings and called at her, and she shook her head, “If I go to your realm, I’ll be safe, but Haru and Beloved…” she stared at the owl, “It isn’t an option. But you and I will be enough to fend them off here, I’ll just have to use the song that I don’t like to.”
She pinched her arm, pulling out a feather of golden light as the owl took flight, then with both hands took the feather and spread her arms, summoning a naginata that she grasped with slender fingers as her wings unfurled from her back.
As the black ship with the red cloud on it’s bow rose from the shadows beneath her small boat, her mouth opened in song, this one seemingly strange for her, full of pain and sorrow.
Yet her wings remained golden, even as she dove down to meet them, there was that underlying tone of light even in this song of hopelessness.
There was no bloodshed, the crew that was prepared to capture her fell asleep as she landed gently on their craft, the one leading this ship was one of the only two standing as she finished her song.
“I recognize you,” she said quietly to the orange haired man, “You were the shadow that led the others in taking Shukaku from Gaara.”
There was a step behind her, and she turned to see the woman with the flower in her hair, “I ask that you come with us,” Pein said, “With your power, we can rebuild this world.”
“For whom do you rebuild it?” Phoenix asked as she turned back to him, “For yourselves? For the one that is pulling your strings?”
“Perhaps for your unborn child,” he said as he held his hands out, “I don’t intend to take no as an answer,” he smiled at her shocked look, “Then it’s true? You carry a child of an Aeon and Eidolon?”
She gripped the naginata, “I will not hand her over.”
“We want the one who was the legendary artifact of Tsubasa as well,” Konan said, “You can heal…”
“Peace Angel,” Pein snapped, “Right now our mission is far more important,” he stepped forward, “You can come with us willingly or you can fight, but even an Eidolon will not hold against me, especially not one that has been weakened as you have.”
Her eyes narrowed as she heard the sound of five other steps coming onto the deck, “But I…”
“A sleep spell will not work,” he said as the other bodies of Pein came into sight, “If you cannot kill, then you will lose.”
Sing in the stars!
She blinked at the sudden voice in her head, one that was unknown to her, yet at the same time sounded strangely familiar, and she dismissed her weapon, clasping her hands as the sun started setting and singing another song, one of seemingly distant light.
Tokei flew down then, reaching his mistress just as a dark silver light surrounded her, and then…
Pein and Konan uncovered their eyes to find that Phoenix was gone, somehow escaped from their grasp, “What now?” she asked of him, and he frowned.
“We find her and capture her,” he said quietly, “That power was not hers…”
“But then how?”
“The one we seek,” he smirked, “We’ll definitely be able to bring in the new world now. Look at the power he has even without being born.”

Chapter Five
“What made you open a place like this?” Odin asked as he washed the dishes, “Shane says that you came to Danshoku when you were twelve, so how is it a child builds an inn?”
Mira smiled, setting down her knife as she turned to face him, “Did he tell you what happened when I was brought here? That for a few months I had no thoughts of my own, they were stolen by a crown of iron?”
He shook his head and looked at her in confusion as she went back to chopping the vegetables, “Kei was my master then. That happened a few days after I found your sister’s ruby and, despite the crack in it, put it on around my neck. He discovered me and my talent soon after, he was searching for the holy artifacts that contained Eidolons, and when he realized that he couldn’t take the ruby from me, he watched me closely, trying to see if I had another use,” she paused, her eyes narrowed, “That was when he found out about my kekkei genki,” she said as she held out her hand and summoned a small flame, “And with that information, I had a new use for him, that of a ‘weapon’.”
“How old were you?” he asked quietly, “Is that why Naruto can’t remember you from the ramen shop?”
“I was eight,” she said, “And that’s one reason. The other is that I stayed in the kitchen for the most part. As much as Uncle and Ayame cared for me, I was still a danger, my emotions had already caused one mishap, and they were wary that I might lose control,” she shook her head, “Yet somehow, I never did while working in a kitchen. It’s a place that I feel right at home.”
He chewed his bottom lip, “How did you get free?”
“Kei was making a gamble, he figured that he could get Saisei if Shane was out of the picture,” she said quietly, “So we came here, not that I knew who or where I was at the time, and he edged his way into the inner circle, me following along. It wasn’t until some of the crimes of our past had caught up that Shane or Haru had any idea of what we were,” she shook her head, “And all of those crimes were resting purely on my shoulders, he never got his hands dirty once. So when Kei was confronted by the two of them about what I had done, he ordered me to kill them.”
Odin’s eyes widened, “You…”
“Sin came out and struck me down as I summoned the first of the flames, even before Shane and Haru knew what was happening,” she placed her hand on her chest, “I still have the scar here. It was only when I was dying that they could see the crown, and the blood from the fatal wound poured over the ruby, releasing Phoe. It’s because of her that I’m alive today,” she smiled, “And it’s because of that ancient enemy of yours that I’m not a mindless slave. He was the only one to notice the crown.”
“But that makes no sense, why would he even do that?” he asked, “If Haru died, then he would have been freed.”
“But Phoe would still be trapped,” she pointed out, “And lost again more than likely. He did it to save her, not me. And I’m glad he did, Phoe was dying in that prison.”
He looked down at the dishes, “You started this place after that?”
“I had four years missing,” she said, “And the only thing I knew how to do was cook, so I figured that was a start. After a while it became a bigger goal,” she gestured around her, “The Haven is a place for people that have no where else to go. I want it to be a home for those who for whatever reason don’t have one anymore. It took me a good year to save up from my ramen cart to build this place, and a little bit of traveling to try and find out what happened in those blank years. That’s how I became Suna’s agent in Danshoku, but that’s another story,” she pointed at the kitchen doorway where Naruto was waiting for Odin, “Dinner rush is over, so go on home and get some rest. Coming back to work for me tomorrow night?”
He slowly nodded, then smiled, “Is everyone welcome here?”
“Anyone that asks for sanctuary in this place has it,” she said softly, “Even if that person was the worst criminal known to man. Here you can start to redeem yourself… or at least that’s my hope,” she closed her eyes, “We’ve all made mistakes.”
The two of them left for their home as the karaoke machine started up, a sure sign that though the kitchen was closed and dinner over, the citizens of Danshoku still wanted to enjoy her tavern. She sighed as she finished the vegetables and put them away for the next day, and then went out to the front, smiling at the customers that still filled up her bar, causing her to get very little sleep most days.
Not that she could sleep that much. She may not have remembered what she did during those four years, but her subconscious did nearly every time she closed her eyes.
“Hey, I can handle this,” Temari said, interrupting her thoughts, “You go on up to bed. You’ve been on your feet all day.”
“Says the pregnant woman carrying twins,” Mira said as she placed her hands on her hips, “And I woke you up almost immediately after I came down here, plus put you under stress from worrying about Phoe. So if anyone’s going to bed, it’s you.”
“Aw, but baby sister…” Temari started and the other woman pointed up the stairs, “How come you’re two years younger than me and still can do that?” she grumbled as she got up and headed towards her room.
She smiled and wiped her hands on her apron as she started serving customers, looking up as the door opened and Jiraiya walked in, “Hey, you haven’t come in this late in a long while.”
“I’m heading out on a long journey in the morning,” he said as she poured him his usual drink, “But if I succeed, then we’ll be just that much closer to winning this war.”
“So I’ll tell Gaara that you’re taking that mission after all then,” she nodded, “You want me to pack some rations for you?”
“Of all the double agents I’ve met, I think you’re my favorite,” he grinned as he pulled out a package, “This is for Naruto. Give it to him tomorrow when he comes in?”
She raised an eyebrow as she took it, “Why not give it to him now? Or had given it to Shane when you accepted the mission?”
He drunk the sake, “You won’t push him to make a decision, whether or not he undergoes the toad’s training will be purely to him. If I left that with his husband or with the toads, he’ll be pulled in that direction,” he sighed, “Tell the kid that I meant to tell him sooner, but I kept putting it off. I should have told him when he got back from Ushiogakure, hell, I should have told him when we left on that journey,” he looked at her, “In there are my first and last books.”
“You talk like you’re not coming back,” she said quietly.
He took another shot, “You know what the mission is,” he said as he got up, leaving money on the counter, “Keep the change. I think I owe you a pretty sizable tab anyways.”

Chapter Six
The light around Phoenix faded, and she blinked at the dark cavern that she was in, “Where…” she whispered as she slowly got to her feet, then turned to the soft moaning of pain.
She stepped forward when a blade pressed itself against her throat, “Just who are you?”
“I’m…”
“Phoe?” a familiar voice groaned, and she sighed a breath of relief as she recognized it, “Chain, it’s alright.”
The cavern lit up then from Chain’s torch and she walked to the bed that Haru was in, kneeling at his side, “I thought you said that you would be fine with this mission,” she said softly.
“Sin made me lie,” he whispered, “You know how he hates worrying you,” he smiled as she placed her hands on his chest, “Guess I’m lucky that you got here so quickly.”
“There’s a good deal of damage, so stay still,” she said as she closed her eyes and started singing.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sasuke breathed heavily as he stared with wide eyes at the remains of the battlefield, the body in front of him…
He didn’t hear the footsteps of the approaching man, he fell to his knees, laughing and crying at the same time.
And yet… even though his longtime goal of defeating his brother was finally complete… there was an emptiness here, something was missing.
“So we finally meet Sasuke,” a voice said and he looked up to see the masked man, the sharingan that matched his…
Black flames erupted on the mask, and Sasuke only heard a scream as darkness overtook him, his chakra depleted from the battle.
Madara knelt down, screaming in agony as the black flames engulfed him, then started laughing, “You failed again!” he cried as the fire slowly started to vanish, “And now I have your eyes!” he turned to the body, a hand touching the shoulder to turn it over.
It turned black, becoming a pile of feathers that flew away with the wind, “A clone?” he asked in surprise.
“No, it was him during the fight,” he turned to see Zetsu peeking out of the rocks behind him, “I can’t explain it at all.”
“He drank something,” the black Zetsu said, “He wanted his body to turn to dust like that. We thought it was medicine at the time, but he did put a feather in it before he drank it.”
Madara removed the mask, walking over to Sasuke, “This one…”
“I do hope that you’re not making plans without me,” a voice said, and both Madara and Zetsu turned to see the smirking blonde woman in a red dress, “You do remember our deal don’t you little Madara-chan?”
“I fail to see what purpose you have with this one,” he growled.
“The exact same as your plans, he’s so easy to corrupt, look at what a tiny promise of power did,” she stepped down to him, “And if he believes what you were going to tell him, then there’s no reason that I can’t enter this little charade.”
“I was only going to tell him the truth,” Madara crossed his arms, “He’s an Uchiha, he belongs to me.”
“You were going to tell him just enough truth for him not to spot your lies,” she wagged her finger at him, “Hasn’t anyone taught you that you shouldn’t try to teach your granny to suck eggs? I and my brother made you, we can unmake you.”
He narrowed his eyes, staring at her for a long moment before shrugging, “What would you have me do?”
“Have you heard the interesting news? A new god is going to be born,” she sneered, “That fool slip of a girl that Eldest corrupted is actually pregnant. Pein has already failed in one attempt to capture her,” she laughed, “But I have a much better idea than what he’s thinking, let the fool have his fun, but convince him that we need the bijuu right now more than the Eidolon b***h. When it’s time, we’ll collect the brat and it’ll believe whatever I tell it.” she pointed at Sasuke, “As for him, tell him exactly what you were going to, let him rage and fall even further into this wonderful darkness that you find yourself in. Even with that little creature that attached himself to him, he won’t be able to stop himself from becoming a fitting host to Wrath. Promise him power, let him believe that his vengeance isn’t over yet.”
“And what if he does somehow finish it?”
“Simple my dear boy, give him something else to hate,” she turned away from him and started to walk away, “Do all that I have asked you to do, and I will give you the one that is the source of the Uchiha and Senju clan’s powers.”
“What exactly will be the finale of this plan of yours?” he asked as he placed his mask back on.
She stopped, “Beautiful chaos, the dream of my Father come to life,” she held her hands up to the sky, “And when I present even the White Moon to him and all these wonderful souls full of darkness and despair, he will finally declare me worthy of his gifts of power! I will be the vessel chosen of the Aeons to bring everything into deep darkness!”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
He tried to scream in pain, the sound only coming out as a hoarse cough as he looked around, disoriented and wondering who he was.
“I’m rather tired of these ones that cheat their way out of my realm,” a voice said and he looked up to see a darkly tanned boy with blond hair and blood-red eyes that was writing in a book, “I suppose I can make yet another exception for Kaze, he has done some work for me in the past, but I hate the paperwork that this sort of thing causes.”
“You have eternity for all of that paperwork,” another voice said, as a woman appeared next to the boy, her long black hair flowing around her, “Besides, his body did die.” Slender hands wrapped themselves around him and he was picked up as she scratched his forehead, “Do you remember who you are little one?”
Images came to him, and suddenly he did remember all that he had done and why.
He flapped his wings, trying to get away from these two that were not human, were never human, he had to get back to his brother, warn him of the danger…
“You didn’t think that you would be allowed to prevent his fate did you?” the woman said sadly, “You would be better off watching quietly over your woman and your future son. He’s the only hope that your clan has of redemption now.”
He struck at her, clawing and biting, the only attacks he had now, and she nodded, “If that’s the way that you want it, I do have a gift for you. I can grant you a night of humanity every seven years.”
That caused him to stop, look up at her, and she stroked his beak, “The first shall be the night he’s born, use your time wisely, it shall only last from sunset to sunrise,” with that she let go and he flew away, landing on a branch above the two beings and giving them a strange look.
“He’s wondering what your catch is,” the boy said as he opened his book and started writing.
“You caught me at an interesting time in my lonely eternity,” she called up, her amethyst eyes dancing as she laughed, “The last of our circle is about to be born, my darlings will soon be returning to me. Take the gift and go before I change my mind!”
Still giving her a wary eye, he unfurled his wings, flying away, and she leaned against a tree, laughing as she fell to her knees, her hair flowing in front of her face.
“They won’t remember you,” the boy pointed out, “Or are you laughing about something else?”
“Strange how the children are all coming together isn’t it?” she said as she looked up, a somber look on her face, “Even more of my predictions are about to be fulfilled,” she flashed the boy a crooked smile, “Want to make a wager on how it’ll turn out?”
“I learned a long time ago not to take bets from you,” he said as the wind shifted and both vanished into the night.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Phoenix stood, turning to Chain, “He’ll be alright now,” she said quietly, “Just give him a bit of time to rest.”
He nodded, his hand caressing Haru’s face, and she smiled as she waved her hand, letting the dark-haired man sleep for the first time in the few days since his old teammate had returned to him.
There was a crying, and she turned to it, walking out of the cave as she followed the sound, finding her way through the tunnels and into a clearing with a lake and a great withering tree at the center of it.
She studied the tree for a moment, placing her hands on the trunk and with the powers that she had left at this time, started singing, not realizing the crowd of people that drew around her as her wings unfurled, nor did she see the light that came from the sudden dawn.
Even if this was a very long night, and longer still were ones yet to come, it was still her duty to heal and to sing in the dawn, no matter what else happened, she had to keep singing that small bit of hope.
If she or any of the people of Taki, had looked up, they would have seen the strange blond boy and the mysterious midnight haired woman sitting in the boughs of the tree as the boy crossed something out of his book.

Chapter Seven
“Man, I’ve been getting a lot of tips,” Naruto grinned as he counted the money on the table, “How’s your savings coming?”
“I told her that I didn’t want anything, but she insisted,” Odin said quietly as he placed a small pile of bills next to Naruto’s, “You can have it for yours…”
“No way!” he ruffled the Eidolon’s hair, “Come on, you earned this! It’s been a long month!” he grinned, “And when Ero-sennin gets back, we’re treating him to a night out,” he pulled out his toad coin purse, “I don’t know what he’s so worried about, but I’m finally going to pay him back for all of that ramen that I made him get for me in the last three years.”
Odin smiled gently, “He’ll die of shock, Iruka nearly did, remember?”
The door opened, and both looked up to see Shane coming in, “Saisei’s still at the office?” Naruto asked, “Hey wanna go out tonight? I’ve got a day off and all.”
“Only because Mira forced you too,” Odin pointed out as he got up, “I’m going to go see if I can help Brother any.”
Shane waited for him to leave before looking at Naruto, “I’m tired, alright? We’ll do it some other time.”
“Want me to get you anything?” he asked, “And hey, did you read that book Ero-sennin left?”
“I’ll read it later,” he shrugged as he went upstairs, “Have fun at work.”
Naruto blinked in confusion, “But I just said that I…” his words were lost on the closed door, and he sighed, “Something’s going on with him,” he said quietly, “I’m getting worried.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yuko stared at the manila envelope on her desk, tapping her fingers on the wood, before she nodded to herself. “I should have done this a long time ago,” she said as she picked up the envelope and walked out of her office, passing Kiyoko on the way out, “Hey, can you place this in the outgoing mail?” she asked breathlessly, “There’s a place that I’m meeting someone.”
The blonde nurse nodded, “Right away ma’am!” she said and then rushed to do as she was asked.
The red-head watched for just a moment, then turned and walked out of the medical center for what she thought might be the last time.
“No turning back,” she muttered as she placed her hand on her growing stomach, “I refuse to let this one become like I was.”
As she was walking through the plaza, she didn’t notice the crow that was following her, keeping in the rafters until she entered the Haven, then swooping down and flying in before anyone could see.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Hey Brother!” Odin said happily as he entered the Yaoikage’s office, “Naruto told me to keep the money, but I don’t know what to spend…” he stopped, a concerned look on his face as he saw Saisei staring at the still brightly shining feather, “Is she finally coming home? Mira and Temari were pretty worried about her.”
“Not only is she coming back in the next few days, she managed to make a treaty with one of the most hostile minor villages,” he growled, “I had meant for that thing to finally be destroyed when I sent his host out.”
Odin’s eyes widened, “But…”
“She keeps falling, but this feather won’t turn black!” Saisei threw it down, “How can she still be serving the Light after all that she’s done!?!”
“She forgives,” the elder of the two stared at the younger as he said that, “No matter who does what to her, she forgives them completely, a…and have you ever once seen the dawn while she was here without hearing her singing? She’s kept to her beliefs that we’re supposed to be guides.”
“An Eidolon is supposed to forgive?” he scoffed as he stood, “Then you would forgive?”
“I had to, Megumi made me a bet that if any Uzumaki came to…” he winced as Saisei grabbed his arms, “Brother, that hurts.”
“I wasn’t talking about the humans,” he said lowly, “That thing raped her in the sacred orchard, snatched her away from us in our own home. You would be able to forgive something like that?”
“Brother,” Odin started, then gasped as he was pushed back onto the desk, “Why are you…”
“You’ve been ignoring me,” he whispered, “And for what, to wash dishes? To try and figure out some crazed belief our sister was corrupted with,” he ripped off Odin’s shirt then placed his hand on the waistband of his trousers, “I’ll make sure that light of yours doesn’t shine towards those who don’t deserve it again.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mira was busy with customers when Yuko came in, so she took a table near the fireplace, resting her head on her hand as she chewed her lip, sudden last thoughts fighting what she was planning on doing.
“You alright?” she looked up to see the fiery haired woman smiling at her as she placed down a cup, “You look like the weight of the world is on your shoulders.”
“Mira,” Yuko chewed her lip, “I need sanctuary.”
Her eyes widened, “Why? You’ve lived here longer than I have…”
“I’m the Akatsuki spy,” she interrupted, “The council will be receiving the evidence that I sent them in the morning. I’m the one that got Kei out, I’m the one that’s been feeding them the information all this time. I want Sanctuary for my son, not for me.”
“Well too bad,” Mira crossed her arms, “You’re both getting it. I needed a doctor on the premises anyways. Stay right here.”
She left the table then, returning a few minutes later with a keyring, “Basement floor, room 5, and there’s a empty room that you can make into a doctor’s office that’s right next door. You know the rules right? That you can’t leave Haven until the Council decides that you’re not a danger to anyone.”
“I guess you better get a message to Kaze that I won’t be able to buy tea from his shop anymore,” she blinked as Mira took out a pad, “Eh?”
“Tell me what you normally get and I’ll ask that he delivers it,” she smiled, “It’s right next door anyways. You just worry about relaxing and keeping that baby healthy.”
Yuko stared at her for a long moment, “Why are you doing this? I betrayed…”
“You also turned yourself in when you could have ran elsewhere,” Mira pointed out, “And you called Sanctuary here, for your son, not for you. You were going to accept whatever punishment they give,” she placed her hands on her hip, “You’ve heard me say it countless times, everyone who asks for it is forgiven here.”
“What if it’s someone who never does ask for it?”
Mira shrugged, “Then I guess time will take care of that hurt. Regret’s a hell of a thing,” she walked away then, leaving Yuko alone.
Not quite, but the red-haired medic hadn’t noticed the crow that had been following her, and was now resting in the alcove above her head, just yet.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Odin hugged his knees, wondering why…
“If you had just asked, I would have given it to you willingly,” he whispered as he swept Saisei’s bangs out of the elder Eidolon’s eyes.
The light from Phoenix’s feather was still glowing from where it was thrown on the floor, and he stared at it for a long moment before chewing his lip and nodding to himself, reaching to pinch his brother’s arm, pulling out a feather.
Tears were in his eyes as he examined it, then slowly got up, his body wracked with pain as he walked to the coal stove in the corner of the office, opening the grate and inserting the feather inside.
He watched it burn to cinders and then he closed the grate and walked slowly back to Saisei, wrapping his arms around him, “I’m sorry,” he whispered, “I’ll figure out some way to fix this.”

Chapter Eight
Temari entered the tavern, an unreadable expression on her face as she turned to Mira and Yuko, “Did you tell us everything?” she asked quietly.
“The council? They received every bit of evidence,” Yuko said, “What were the results of the committee?”
“Not the council,” the blonde narrowed her eyes and pointed at the bartender, “Her. Did you tell her everything? She has a right to know who the hell she’s giving sanctuary to.”
“Calm down Tema…” Mira started, “It doesn’t matter.”
“The hell it doesn’t!” she snapped, “Your medical records were part of the evidence! Along with Phoe’s!” she glared at Yuko, “So you better tell her what you did or so help me, I’m kicking you out to the curb.”
“She got Kei out, so what?” Mira said, “Calm…”
“That isn’t what she’s talking about,” Yuko whispered, causing the fiery haired woman to look at her, “You were rushed to the hospital after the crown was taken off, remember. I was the one who operated on you after Phoe got you stabilized,” she clenched her fists, “You were pregnant.”
Mira’s eyes widened, “Wai… what? But I was twelve, how the hell… my first cycle wasn’t until after…” she blinked, “You told me that it was normal for the first one to be that heavy.”
“And that b*****d better be glad that he’s already dead,” Temari growled, “Because if I ever get my hands on him…”
“Did the baby…” Mira sat down, “What happened to…” she took a deep breath.
“Kei took the remains with him,” Yuko chewed her lip, “He wanted to try and get your kekkei genki. I wasn’t given a choice, and you were so young and under all that other trauma, I couldn’t tell you what had really happened.”
“Just how far along was I?” she asked in a shaking voice.
“A few months, four at the most. There was no way she could have survived.”
Mira stood, “Tema, can you watch the place for a bit? And Yuko, don’t even place a finger outside that door, the council hadn’t made their final decision yet. Was there anything else that you…” she shook her head, “Nevermind, it doesn’t matter. You had your reasons, right?”
“Mira…” Temari whispered, a twinge of regret in her voice, “Baby sis, you…”
“I just need to go upstairs and rest a bit,” she said quietly, “With Phoe gone and my employees taking last night off, I just got a bit overworked,” she walked towards the stairs, “If Naruto and Odin come in, let them know not to let anyone pull her out. They aren’t quite as aware of my rules, since this is the first time it’s come up since they started living in Danshoku. And Yuko, when Kaze or Hayato come in, give them that list you need for setting up the clinic downstairs.”
“Damnit,” the blonde smacked her head on the counter after Mira had gone upstairs, “I was so pissed off at you that I forgot just how young she actually is.”
“You’re right though, I needed to tell her,” Yuko poured herself another cup of tea, “The Council is going to make everything public knowledge before voting on my punishment. I’ve seen it once or twice before Mira set this place up,” she shivered, “It wasn’t a pretty sight.”
“You ever see it after Haven got established?”
“She isn’t kidding, she’ll protect anyone that declares it, but she can only do it if they stay in this area,” Yuko folded her hands, “They’ll try and trick me into leaving, but I can hold on until after Karasu is born.”
“It’s an inter-village offense,” Temari pointed out, “I can try and get your punishment lightened somehow, but only because she did just forgive you for that, and you weren’t the b*****d that did it in the first place, you just kept it from her,” she narrowed her eyes, “The Akatsuki are going to be coming after you too. Got a plan for that?”
“Not yet,” she sighed.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Thanks for helping me out with this,” Iruka said to Odin as he climbed the ladder in front of the Academy, “The kids are really looking forward to this, it’ll be lots of fun.”
“A pretty good way to distract them from the war too,” the Eidolon said quietly as he handed up the orange and yellow streamers, “Why do you honor the dead so?”
“It’s a way of remembering where we came from,” the chunin smiled, “And remembering friends and family that passed before us. I’ve always liked this festival, the lanterns always look like little stars as they float away.”
“Your lives are like small flames too,” he whispered, then hugged himself, “Do you think I should have a lantern for Megumi? She always tried to explain this to me, but then I just didn’t understand.”
“She’ll like that,” a hand ruffled his hair and he looked up to see Naruto grinning at him, though the grin didn’t seem as happy as it usually did, “I’m going to make one for my parents too.”
“You both should come and help me with the pre-kindergarten class,” Iruka said as he climbed down the ladder, “I could always use some help teaching here.”
“There are a lot of kids running around the ship,” the blond noted, “Kinda surprising, I don’t think there were this many in Konoha.”
“That was one of the good things Yuko did,” the burnet looked up at the streamers, “She did a lot of genetic research. Though a lot of the children are orphans that somehow made it here,” he smiled sadly, “A few of us were real busy finding parents for all of them a couple of months before you got here. Konoha isn’t the only set of refugees here.”
He waved to the two as he went inside the Academy to do some more work, “I hope Shane wants to come to this,” Naruto said quietly, “It’d be good for him to take a break from everything.”
Odin slowly nodded, “Saisei will say that it’s a waste of time,” he chewed the inside of his cheek, “But even so, I like human festivals like this. There was one back…” he shook his head, “What did he mean by ‘one of the good things’ that she did?”
“You weren’t at the tavern last night so you didn’t hear,” he said, “She’s called Sanctuary there because she’s part of the Akatsuki. The Council’s deliberating all the evidence,” he sighed, “Come on, let’s go ask those two anyways. Maybe they’ll change their minds.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The next few days passed quietly for the people of Danshoku as they tried to place their current troubles out of their mind and prepare for the Lantern Festival.
“Kaze, how are you going to light all of these at once?” Mira asked as she stepped into the tea shop that was filled almost to capacity with the paper globes, they were crowding around everything, including a good pile that seemed to have fallen on the sleeping Hayato.
The silver haired man looked up from the one that he was painting at the counter, “I was just going to spend the night lighting them and sending them off, besides I figured that I’d add the few for Yuko since she can’t go out to the deck with everyone else,” he gave Mira one of the smaller orbs, “And this one is for you.”
“It’s beautiful,” she said as she traced the butterfly and petal pattern with her finger, “You know, you’ve got a real talent for this.”
He smiled, “So you’re here for Yuko’s order then?” she nodded and he went to get the tea together, “You haven’t ordered your usual tea in a long time, are you having an easier time sleeping?”
She smiled sadly, her fingers unconsciously brushing the glass bracelet on her wrist, “In a way. I’m still not sleeping all that much, but I don’t seem to have the nightmares I once did. So do you want Phoe and myself to come and pick you two up tomorrow for the procession? Tema and Haru said that they would keep an eye on the tavern while we sent them, though I think it’s to flirt with that guy that came back with him.”
“It starts at sunset, right?” Kaze smiled as he gave her the package for Yuko, “Sure.”
“I’ll go ahead and order a few dozen bottles of your best sake,” she said as she started to leave, “I have a feeling tomorrow’s blow-out in the bar is going to last for a long while.”
“I’ll ask Hayato to deliver it when he gets up,” he waved as the door swung closed behind her, then picked up the lantern that he was painting.
“You might be the only one I know that tries to honor everyone,” a voice said and he looked down to see the blond boy that was writing in a giant book, “You do realize that the festival is not supposed to be for those you took down in battle.”
“I don’t like to forget anyone,” Kaze said quietly, “You came for the White Woman tea and Serpent Tears sake, correct?”
“I haven’t changed my order in the centuries that we’ve known each other, why stop now?” he continued writing, “My sister has an odd way of celebrating this festival.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Iruka-sensei was right,” Odin smiled as he leaned on the railing, “It does look like a bunch of stars are flying off.”
Next to him Saisei snorted, “This is a waste of time. Who cares about the dead?”
The younger Eidolon chewed his lip, “I do,” he said quietly, “I miss them when they go,” he shook his head, “It’s a shame that Shane couldn’t come, I think Naruto was looking forward to going to the party afterwards with him.”
“He had work,” came the snapped answer, “The council’s putting a lot of pressure on him right now.”
“Hey! Mira brought the ramen cart!” Naruto said happily as he ran up to the two with a pile of bowls, “I got as many as I can carry, wanna have an eating contest?”
“Su…” Odin started.
“That’s gluttony,” Saisei said as he walked away from the two, “And I wouldn’t eat any food that came from that place anyways.”
“Saisei,” the younger of them gave him a worried look.
“I’ll meet you back at home,” he said, “I’m just tired of all of this.”
Naruto chewed his lip, “Is it really gluttony?” he asked in a small voice.
“I don’t think so,” Odin hugged his knees, “Everyone in your clan ate like this,” he took the bowl that Naruto handed to him, “Besides, it’s not like it’s the only thing you do.”
“Something’s wrong with the two of them,” he said glumly, “I wish I knew what to do to help.”
Both nodded, eating their ramen in pensive silence when someone tapped Naruto on the shoulder and he looked up to see Iruka, “Hey…”
“Can you come to the tavern?” Iruka said quietly in a strained voice, “There’s news about Jiraiya, and you need…”
He didn’t finish, Naruto and Odin were already up and running, making it from the deck to Haven in record time and flinging open the doors.
“We found her floating in his boat,” Kankuro was saying to Temari, “She said that the white-haired man had given the toad to her and that she was supposed to bring it here to Naruto.”
“But she looks like…” the blonde chewed her lip, “And her age, she’s what, four? This is just too much of a coincidence.”
“You think I didn’t try and tell that to Gaara?” he sighed, running a hand through his hair, “Look, even if it somehow is, she’s still a genuine kid in trouble. She’s not being controlled by anything that I could detect and you know how thorough I am…”
“What’s the news?” Naruto blurted out, and both siblings turned to him.
“Suna found her in their airspace,” Temari pointed to where a small fiery haired girl was talking to a teary eyed Mira, “She was holding an elder toad in her arms…”
“And I can take it from here,” a elderly voice said and all four of them looked down to see the toad with bushy eyebrows that was leaning heavily on a cane, “You’re Jiraiya-chan’s student eh? He left a message for you.”

Chapter Nine
The memorial for Jiraiya took place a few days after the news of his death came. After the service was over, most went somberly back to their duties while Naruto stood alone on the deck of the ship, a pale blue lantern in his hands.
Odin walked to stand beside him, “I think he’ll enjoy Megumi’s company,” he said quietly.
The older blond nodded, wiping a tear from his eye, “Yeah, she seemed like the type of girl that would keep him in line too. Like Baa-chan was,” he sniffed.
“Are you going to take Fukasaku’s offer?”
He hugged the lantern, “I’ve got to think about it some more. Even if it’s just for a little while, I don’t wanna leave Shane, not when…” his voice trailed off, and both were silent, thinking about the night they came home from hearing the news, finding the Yaoikage not in his office, but passed out on the floor of the bathroom, syringes next to him and a half-full sake bottle in his hand.
Odin had ran to Saisei’s room and took Phoenix’s feather, using it’s healing powers to revive him, then both carried him to bed, sharing an uneasy vigil until he woke up the next morning.
“I’ll go when he gets out of this slump,” Naruto smiled half-heartedly, “He’s still upset over…” he shook his head, “Besides, we’ve got that message to figure out and…” he stopped at the small hand on his arm.
“Let’s not worry about it right now,” he said quietly, “We’ll figure out how to help them.”
“Let the night never cease to call you, let the day nevermore be the same. Though you have gone where we cannot find you, in each heart you have set your name.
Mithrandir, far you wander and long may your name be sung through kingdoms of starlight and realms of the sun. Mithrandir, though you’re hidden, we’re still guided by your light. You’re walking beside us, a friend in the night.”
Both turned at the soft voice, and Odin smiled sadly as he saw Phoenix standing on the edge of the stern, her hands clasped in prayer as she sung into the darkness, “Ero-sennin definitely will find his way now,” he said as he took the lantern and with Naruto, let it go into the starry night to float away, “Her songs always guide the lost ones.”
“Mithrandir rising through the shadow, like a star shining deep in it’s home, you will dwell in our hearts forever. Nevermore will we stand alone.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“She’s a cute one,” Iruka said to Mira as the small girl hid behind her, “What’s your name sweetie?” he asked as he smiled at her.
She shook her head, “I’ve decided to call her Karin,” Mira said as she patted the girl’s head, “She’s really shy though, so I’m a bit nervous about her coming to school, that’s why I’m asking what your opinion is.”
“She’s the girl that Jiraiya-sennin found in Ame, isn’t she?” Iruka asked, “Being around some children about her age might help. Kakashi seemed to think that she was pretty traumatized by that fight.”
“The elderly toad said that she saw the whole thing,” the innkeeper smiled sadly down at her, “But that she saved his life by grabbing him before any of the ones that they were fighting could attack him and discover what Jiraiya had left. I suppose it’s a good thing that she did, this Pein seemed hesitant about attacking her.”
“I hate to ask this, but there’s another rumor going around, one that deals with…” Iruka rubbed the back of his head, “Is she…”
“I think so,” Mira said quietly, “She definitely has my hair and some of my features, and,” she bent down, holding out her hand where a small flame danced.
Karin smiled and grabbed it before opening her palm and showing the flame there.
“She has your kekkei genki,” Iruka noted.
Mira looked up at him, “Phoe saved my life then, it’s possible that some of her magic passed on to save her. I don’t know how Yuko missed it though.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kaze twirled the scalpel in his hand before making the first incision on the body that had been brought back via sealing scroll by the elder toad, “The brain’s intact,” he noted, “But the time of death is far earlier than what I’ve been told.”
“I could have told you that,” the blond boy that was writing in his book said from where he was sitting in the corner, “If you want I can look up his original time of death.”
“That would take all the fun out of it then,” he smiled, ignoring the muttered response of why the hell did the boy kept all this paperwork if no one ever looked anything up, and Hayato looked up from where he was sleeping on the other table.
“Take the fun out of what?” he asked, looking around the room, then frowned, “You’re talking to Death again?”
“I’m still curious over why you can’t see him,” Kaze said before resuming his examination.
“Because he’s living, thanks to you. And a mountain of paperwork because of it,” the boy paused in his writing to glare at Kaze, “You have no idea how much I’m going to work you once you come completely to my side. And don’t think that you’ll be done once the world ends. There’s another ten-thousand years at least to be done after that, and that’s if it doesn’t get revived. Don’t even ask how busy we’ll be if that happens.”
“So those little metal studs doing anything besides looking completely ridiculous?” Hayato asked as he placed his hands behind his head, trying to get comfortable on the table once again, “And I don’t want to see him. He’s probably some ugly old man.”
“You might be onto something there,” Kaze took one out, “It’s magnetic. It could channel chakra…”
“Just hurry up so we can go have some real fun!” Hayato whined, “You promised!”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“What are you doing?” Mira asked as she came back to Haven to find Saisei nailing a notice on her door.
“Placing up a list of criminals to be tried,” he shot her a glare, “Go ahead and keep hiding them in that rat’s nest. Shane’s going to take down the Sanctuary rule and they’ll be executed soon enough.”
“Last I checked, he had to run that by the council,” she crossed her arms, “And if Shane feels that strongly about it, he can come down and tell me all this himself,” she ripped the list down, “And how the hell is Haru on this list?”
“He’s the host to that thing, that’s enough for me,” he said as he walked away, “Better be careful that you don’t land yourself on that list. You realize that if we get attacked now we can easily blame it on that brat you just took in.”
She frowned as she watched him leave, a hand unconsciously placing itself on Karin’s head, “Don’t let him scare you,” she said reassuringly, “He’s just upset over Ero-sennin’s death like everyone else. Grief does funny things to people,” with that the two went inside, not seeing the two worried blonds that were behind them.
“Did you hear about that?” Odin asked Naruto quietly.
He shook his head, “I’ll go talk to him,” he promised, then chewed the inside of his cheek, “Hey, can you tell Mira that I won’t be working tonight? I kinda want to walk around alone for a bit.”
Odin nodded sadly as he walked away, “Be careful,” he called after him.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
He didn’t know how long he had been wandering before he found himself sitting alone on a bench, holding a double popsicle that Iruka had bought for him a little while before.
“There are some souls that burn so brightly that they must impact others,” a soft voice said, and he looked up to see Phoenix, “I had only wished that I had spoken with him some more.” He shrugged at her, and she clasped her hands, smiling sadly, “It is a hard duty, to be the one to carry on another’s will and heart.”
“What would you know, you’re immortal aren’t you?” he said bitterly.
“Perhaps because of that, the burden of carrying hope and light is even more trying on us,” she said, “Too much and we burn in the suffering heat, too little and we are trapped in the cold darkness. And yet, no matter what, we have to march on until the day that our purpose is fulfilled, only knowing then why it was that we were created in the first place,” she closed her eyes, “And yet we watch over the ones we chose, seeing with sad eyes that their flames will burn out long before ours, but never forgetting them, adding their hearts and wills to our own until that day comes.”
“You called Ero-sennin something in that song,” he looked up at her, “Mithra-something. What did it mean?”
“Mithrandir, the Grey Wanderer,” she said, “Or Grey Pilgrim, depending. That language is rarely spoken anymore, when once it was heard everywhere, the mortals that came from the moon spoke it.”
“Why grey?”
“Jiraiya balanced the light and the dark in his soul,” she placed her hands on her swollen abdomen, “He carried both, there was a long regret that he had, something he was searching for but never did find.”
“And you say that he left it to me?” he looked down, “What if I can’t find it?”
“Then you shall leave your heart and will to someone who will continue the search,” she said gently, “Death isn’t an ending, to those left behind, it is a possible new beginning. Whether or not you choose to take the path he left is up to you.”
