It's English-translated Indian name should hint what kind of landscape this area is. A hot, harsh, and difficult place, this desert lies to the South of the Green Plain. Coyotes, black-tailed jackrabbits, roadrunners, and the lizard manage to survive here, but hunting is difficult, for most of its inhabitants are either nocturnal, too small to thrive on, or tricksy. A wolf does not belong out Under the Eye of the Sun, because if the lack of nourishment does not drive it to death, the searing heat during the summer months most certainly will.
One advantage to this dry enviroment is that wolves rarely try to cross it, meaning that threats to the pack are unlikely to come from the South. However, this is the direction the majority of humans come from - dark-skinned hunters armed with rifles keen to migrate North in order to shoot the bigger herbivores on the Green Plain - or even further than that, if they have a taste for killing wolves as trophies... Many of these hunters are in the possession of sheep, cattle, and horses. Is it their aim to try and introduce their animals to the lushness of the Green Plain? To overtake the wolves' main hunting ground in order to establish ranches?
