History Saitou Hajime. A formidable name; the master samurai, recognisable to all, and an ancestor whose name, when called upon, would not be taken lightly.
Unfortunately, he bears no relation to this family. The true origin of this family would not be in the imperial guard, but rather in a small coastal town in the Water Country around 500 years ago. A man known only by his surname, Shindou, opened a sushi restaurant, having perfected his craft over many years. He didn't end up doing much else spectacular apart from pass his blade skills on to his sons, though. This continued for a few more generations, until one of the great-great-great grandsons scored the biggest catch of his life in the form of a giant bluefin tuna. Word quickly spread through the town, and throngs of people queued up at the now firmly-establiashed Shindou Sushi-ya. They couldn't wait to see the catch, not to mention see how finely and skilfully the family would present it, and, of course, the no-brainer, to taste it.
This put the Shindou in somewhat of a dilemma. None of their yanagi blades or indeed, any other knife was large enough to cut that 10-foot long beast with the precision and delicacy this magnificent specimen so very deserved. And as the family panicked, discussing frantically with each other on what to do, and throwing quite a few glares at the poor great-great-great grandson who had dared to bring home this thing, the line outside grew longer and longer. Even the local mayor heard of it and decided to drop by. The crowd outside was just starting to get unruly when Shindou Kariya's eyes, darting about the house one last time in desperation, fell on... a sheathed ceremonial katana. It was old. Around 100 years. Musty. Unoiled. Maybe even rusty... he sure didn't want to find out by unsheathing it. But it was big enough, and that was all that mattered. Swallowing his misgivings, he cleaned it up best he could and used it to prepare the sashimi. The bluefin tuna became a roaring success and pushed the fame of the Shindou family through the roof, literally. They had to build a second floor to their restaurant in order to accomodate all their customers after that escapade. And after this, Shindou Kariya changed the family name to Saitou in honour of the blades that had served them so well. He also made it mandatory for each Shindou... no, Saitou son to learn the art of the katana, simply because 'it could come into use one day'.
It eventually did. But not in the way they would have liked. The Saitou family wiled away a few more generations in peace, playing around with their katana and creating a couple of trademark dishes which eventually even became some sort of a performance act. Watch the sushi chef slice intricate, beautiful patterns into your food! Skip a few more generations and the clan was beginning to garner interest amongst gourmet eaters and conoisseurs abroad. However, political instability would eventually bring the clan down. With the advent of the Ninth Great Ninja War, the family full of blade masters was certainly a bountiful resource for the current shinobi leadership of the time, and the Saitou family were duly harvested. Many Saitou men died in battle. The coastal town was also attacked by foreign shinobi, and the sushi-ya was destroyed. Although the family eventually got handsome compensation, they never rebuilt the sushi restaurant. That period of Saitou family history was officially over.
And now to the present. The Saitou family, now a few generations of battle-hardened war veterans, jumped to defend Kirigakure during the attack of the Water Master. In fact, they occupied the frontlines. However, the family, which had become quite small over the generations, was all killed save for the youngest son Andou. At any rate, even before the attack they preferred to keep their fishy past under wraps. It just wouldn't make for good conversation or intimidation material if their history was leaked out, after all. "What's your deal?" "Oh, we made sushi." Just not to same as "We specialise in blades", right? Although the information is for all to gather in the libraries of the Saitou abode (read: Andou's place), few people even in the Saitou clan knew about it. Unfortunately for Andou, since an early age, he hadn't been one of them.

Techniques Style Name: Saitou Style (Saitou-Ryuu) Description of Style: This style consists of many quick deliberate precise cuts, much like when slicing sushi, though many other food preparation methods have inspired the creator as well. Although the individual cuts by themselves don't cause too much damage, if a main artery is severed the rapid blood loss can quickly weaken the opponent. This style prides accuracy and beauty over force. If you're gonna kill someone, you better make their fresh corpse look good!
Cuts: Number 1 - A vertical slice, perpendicular to the ground. Try not to repeat slices - it spoils the texture and appearance. Number 2 - An angled slice which was the most commonly used back in the days of sushi preparation. Angles may vary although the typical angle is 45 degrees as it ensures an attractive crosscut grain pattern. Number 3 - Parallel (horizontal) slice. Named so because the blade runs parallel to the ground. Rank: E Cp Cost: - Dice Rolls: 1 Damage: Weapon damage. Requirements: Any blade 5 Training: 1 stage 3 cuts. Stage I: Ninja Weapons DC 15 Practice and familiarise yourself with the cuts. Special: Ensure entry and exit are as seamless as possible. Yes, messing around in the body with your blade is fun and even more damaging. However, it's ugly. All cuts and variations cause Bleeding.
Additional variations to the simple slice exist: Controlled butterfly cut - In which the user does not let the slice run its natural course, but stops about 3/4 of the way through and removes the blade. On a piece of fish, this results in the slab able to be opened much like a book or a butterfly, hence the name. On a person, it's not really as pretty but Andou doesn't think so.
Technique Name: Shiitake Description of Technique: A rapid series of three cuts, usually across a large surface area such as the chest or back, forming a six-pointed star shape commonly seen on shiitake mushrooms. Rank: D Cp Cost: - Dice Rolls: 1 Damage: Weapon damage + str mod + dex mod Requirements: Any blade 10 Training: 2 stages. Stage I: Ninja Weapons DC 20 Stage II: Ninja Weapons DC 23 Special: It's highly suspected that this technique was only developed because it looked cool. Leaves a scar.
Technique Name: Dice Description of Technique: A rapid crisscross of cuts over a large surface area that is sure to nick at least a few major arteries. Rank: C Cp Cost: - Dice Rolls: 2 Damage: Weapon damage x1.5 Requirements: Any blade 20, Dex 20 Training: 3 stages. Stage I: Ninja Weapons DC 30 Stage II: Dexterity Mod DC 15 Stage III: Ninja Weapons DC 35 Special: Bleeding effect is doubled.
Technique Name: Onion Description of Technique: Developed from the traditional onion cutting technique. First, a vertical slice, followed by a quick parallel slice, preferably before the opponent can react. Then a series of rapid vertical slices finish up the move. Rank: B Cp Cost: - Dice Rolls: 3 Damage: Quadruple weapon damage Requirements: Any blade 30, Str 15, Dex 28 Training: 4 stages. Stage I: Ninja Weapons DC 40 Stage II: Dexterity Mod DC 19 Stage III: Ninja Weapons DC 42 Stage IV: Ninja Weapons DC 45 Special: Bleeding effect is doubled.
Technique Name: Peel Description of Technique: The blade is held at such an angle that the opponent's skin along with minimum bits of muscle are shaved off. Again, rapid cuts are attempted. The end result should look like a peeled human, but that usually requires high skill and dexterity. Typical beginners achieve maybe a peeled arm. Rank: B Cp Cost: - Dice Rolls: 4 Sense Motive DC: 15 + dex mod. Damage: Half weapon damage to Hp. Triple weapon damage to MHp. Requirements: Any blade 35, Dex 35 Training: 4 stages. Stage I: Dexterity Mod DC 22 Stage II: Ninja Weapons DC 45 Stage III: Ninja Weapons DC 48 Stage IV: Dexterity Mod DC 25 Special: This technique counts as an attempt at Intimidation. Opponent must roll a Sense Motive check against the DC. If they fail, they will become Panicked.
Technique Name: Shred Description of Technique: Rapid slices are performed in an attempt to shred the opponent's flesh into strips. This technique is very advanced and is usually used as a last resort since it's well... kinda ugly. Rank: A Cp Cost: - Dice Rolls: 6 Sense Motive DC: 18 + dex mod. Damage: Seven times weapon damage Requirements: Any blade 40, Dex 45 Training: 5 stages. Stage I: Ninja Weapons DC 50 Stage II: Ninja Weapons DC 52 Stage III: Dexterity Mod DC 27 Stage IV: Ninja Weapons DC 55 Stage V: Dexterity Mod DC 32 Special: This technique counts as an attempt at Intimidation. Opponent must roll a Sense Motive check against the DC. If they fail, they will become Panicked.

Clan Weapon Name: Daiyanagiba 大柳刃 Type: Melee, Sword. History: This fine blade was created around 300 years ago, when the Saitou family was well-established both in terms of formidability in battle as well as their delicious sushi cuts. Saitou Kouji, clan leader at that time, took a look at the fighting and slicing style of the family and, remembering the great 10-foot tuna forever inscribed in Saitou history, commissioned one of the great blacksmiths in the Water Country to create the perfect katana. It would be light, but not weak. Movement would be smooth, but not slippery. And the steel would be forged from the finest ever materials, heated to just the right temperature, and hammered enough so as to make the blade flexible but not brittle. Suffice to say, it cost a hell load of money. This beautiful blade was used to slice and cut sashimi for a few lucky guests, usually the rich and famous. Unfortunately, Saitou Kouji was rather imbalanced and ended up hiding the blade in its own secret, sealed room in a secret complex full of poisons and traps, in the mountains. Apparently, he was worried that others would use it for the wrong reasons and people, and pollute its blue luster. Or maybe he just didn't want people to upstage him. Description: The Daiyanagiba is frankly... you got it. A huge sashimi slicer. Well, shoot the Saitou clan, although you can't really since they are all dead and buried except for Andou, and you really don't want to shoot him. Anyway, the blade is beautiful. The hilt and sheath are both black and made of metal, although the sheath is wrapped with a layer of fine leather. The blade itself measures around 4 feet, and has a faint tinge of blue. It's not as straight as a normal yanagi blade but it isn't as curved as a normal katana blade. In-Game Stats: Dex +10, Katana +10 Damage: 10 - 25 + str mod + dex mod Requirements: Saitou clan, Katana 35, Dex 25 Acquisition: Saitou Kouji kept it locked up in a random cavern in the mountains of the Water Country. Travel there from Kirigakure (3 days) battling freezing weather as you ascend the slopes (Fort DC 25, 30, 35 as each day passes). Whilst ascending, must make constant Acrobatics checks of 30 to keep balance on the slippery ledges and to swing up treacherous mountain formations. After 3 days you reach the cavern. It is long abandoned and although that's made it easier to enter, it's also made the traps more unpredictable. Which makes them easier to avoid, since they might not work. Or it might make them harder to deal with since they may also come into effect without being triggered. Difficult things. You have to dodge/avoid a variety of traps including poison, spikes, trip wire, explosives, flying knives, flamethrower etc. etc. After you reach the central room though getting the blade is easy, and after that it's just a matter of getting back [meet same Acrobatics/Fortitude dcs]. Special: - Dual Wield: No. Owner: Saitou Andou
