Contractors
Contractors are individuals who have gained supernatural powers due to the appearance of the Hell's Gate and Heaven's Gate. Contractors are defects that emerge when humans are unable to become Dolls. The existence of Contractors is kept a secret from the general public by most governments around the world, but they are well-known to the higher higher-ups in society and in the criminal underworld. Contractors not only posses a mysterious power, but also a payment that is to be paid each time the power is used. Contractors are typically described to have a lack of emotion, but are not incapable of having them. Their thought process is more highly developed than the average human and will do anything to survive. The general rules seems to be that they feel no guilt, and they cannot form or retain social bonds. A normal Contractor cares, in essence, only about their own well-being, and everything is reduced to a cost/benefit analysis: Any other issues like laws, emotions, or the question of the sanctity of human life are irrelevant to them.

Contract Payment
True to their names, all Contractors must pay a price for using their powers, whether they wish to or not. Moreover, it seems that the amount of payment required is dependent on how much the Contractor uses his/her power. Although this payment can be delayed, especially in the midst of combat, it is ultimately unavoidable. Each Contractor has a unique payment, typically difficult for the Contractor and range in severity from irritating to painful. However, there have been a few contractors who enjoy their contract and at least one who uses it in conjunction with his own ability. Known payments include:
Acupuncture, alteration of age [uncontrollably growing older/younger], arranging pebbles in lines, drinking various fluids such as hot milk, beer, or the blood of children, earmarking a book, eating various foods such as eggs or common garden weeds, kissing someone, telling a secret, singing and smoking. While these are just known payments, payments are definitely not limited to this list.

Dolls
Emotionless "mediums" created to mimic the forms of humans. Dolls can form a variety of functions; the most common one is their use of observer spirits. Dolls have different mediums through which they can send their observer spirits and must be in contact with this medium while observing; for example, if a Doll's medium is water, then that Doll can send it's observer spirit to anywhere with water. A Doll can also act as the perfect sleeper agent. It can be given the memories and personality of another person and assume a person's personality perfectly, mimicking all their habits, dreams, and feelings until the time is right. Oddly enough, Dolls, if left programed and alone, can develop a life of it's own and live accordingly, completely ignorant of their existence as a Doll. Dolls can also develop emotions of their own, but they are usually very weak if similar emotions weren't programed.

Moratoria
An intermediate between a Contractor and a Doll. Moratoria appear to be people with Contractor powers who do not require remuneration as part of their power. Unlike Contractors, they do not have control of their powers, shifting into a hypnotic state of unconsciousness as they use them. Moratoria also suffer from severe mental trauma as a result of their power. The chance of a Moratoria morphing into a Contractor is near zero, but possible. The chances of a human becoming a Moratoria rather than a Doll or Contractor is less than 1 percent, but it does happen.

Regressor
A Contractor who loses their powers in exchange for a flicker of hope for a normal life. There are very few known Regressors, and the way one becomes a Regressor is also unknown.

Evening Primrose [EPR]
A small group of powerful Contractors. They aim to reveal the existence of Contractors to the general public, and to promote their status as a new race/group of humans. Special rights and privileges for Contractors are also on their list of objectives.

Syndicate
A large underground group of Contractors, Dolls and humans that know of Contractors. Their exact goal is unknown, but they do know the only means necessary to create Contractors and Dolls. Generally, the missions they are sent on involve killing bad Contractors. While they do not work with Pandora, their actions assist the organization.

PANDORA [Physical Alteration Natural Deconstruction Organized Research Agency]
Originally dedicated to studying Hell's Gate and Heaven's Gate, they know quite a bit about Contractors. They work closely with the police and has even matched most 'stars' with Contractors. In fact, there is only a handful who they haven't matched up. With their own supply of Dolls and Contractors working for them, they are now dedicated to killing all of the bad Contractors and infiltrating the organizations Syndicate and Evening Primrose.
