June 5th is the 30th anniversary of the first known cases of HIV/AIDS, which is a pretty depressing anniversary.

AIDS is caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) which basically pisses off your T cells so much that they run out and when another infection occurs you have no T cells to fight it off.

HIV does cause AIDS. It's (unfortunately) been proven by Koch's postulates when there was an accident in a research lab and some researchers infected themselves with pure HIV and subsequently got AIDS.

HIV is transmitted by sexual contact (a**l, vaginal, or oral), from mother to child through pregnancy or through birthing or through breast feeding, or by contaminated needles. You can only get HIV by swapping bodily fluids with a person who's infected. Will you get it by standing next to someone or through normal skin to skin contact? No. Will you get it by rubbing your open wound on their open wound? Probably. Also that's gross.

In 2009 according to the WHO, there were 33.3 million people living with AIDS, 2.6 million people acquired AIDS, and 1.8 million people died from AIDS.

This epidemic is the worst in Sub-Saharan Africa. Only about 10% of the world's population lives in Sub-Saharan Africa; however, that 10% contains about 70% of all people infected with HIV.

So, what can you do to help? Well, we love languages, right? So we're the perfect people to TELL OTHER PEOPLE ABOUT IT! Increasing education about how HIV is spread and about safe sex is one of the best ways to prevent AIDS.

Thank you for reading to my rant, and I do hope you help spread awareness.

If you'd like more information you can go to this CDC run website.

(All of my information comes from my professors or from the WHO website on HIV/AIDS).

While I really admire you for taking a stand on this, and feel that it's a really important issue and all, to be honest, the problem is that bringing up the subject of things like safe sex and AIDS without sounding awkward, or like I'm imposing my morals on people is kind of hard...^^; And most of the people I know are the kinds who wait until marriage to have sex, either that or I don't know anything about their sex life and asking would be weird...but I would bring the subject of AIDS up if I could find a non-weird sounding way to do it.^^;

I don't expect you to. Actually, I posted this as a way to spread the word to everyone here and to encourage you, if the occasion ever occurred, to maybe tell others. So, who knows? Maybe this knowledge will never be useful to you, but maybe someday you'll get the chance to spread awareness. I posted this on the off-chance that you might.

So I don't expect anyone to bring it up awkwardly in conversations, but if the chance occurs in English or in another language...

(Also, I capitalized the "tell other people about it" mostly because I didn't expect people to read the whole post. Mostly I expected them to scroll though, think "So what is the point?" see that and think "Oh, OK.")

Ah, OK. sweatdrop I will then, if an opportunity ever presents itself. Oh, and thanks for writing this thread! The information was really well laid out.

Safe sex is just common sense. Especially with how often American youth sleep around.

@ Topic:

This article made me facepalm. I dont want to offend any Cathloics but forbidding Africans from using condoms who are living in a HIV/AIDS epidemic makes me sick.

That makes me sick too.

Also, you'd think he'd spent less time talking about the evils of condoms and more time talking about the benefits of abstinence. After all, teaching people about abstinence could potentially help stop the spread of HIV, but teaching about the evils of condoms definitely won't.
