Summer 7, Year 5
Dear Mom,
Dad said that if I got lonely when he's gone that I should write you letters, so that I can feel like I'm actually talking to someone. I think it's kind of pointless, but I'll do it anyway. He thought it was a good idea.
We moved to a new place. I don't know, I kind of liked Seattle. It was big, but there were lots of things to do. We didn't live there long enough, I don't think. Now we're on this little island. It's really quiet, and there aren't very many people, or things to do, either. Dad had to leave for New York right after we unpacked, so I've been here by myself. It's okay, it's not the first time. Our new house is big, with lots of things to explore.
I did meet someone, though! I was walking around when this kid on a bike came riding up. I guess he's new, too. His name's June. He's younger than me, but we invited me to play with him. We found this really cool old lighthouse. It's all crumbly and old and stuff, I liked it a lot. But June's kind of annoying, because he's so cocky and all. He had spray cans and I got mad and he got mad and called me a goody-two-shoes, and then I left after taking his cans.
...I'd still play with him again, though. I haven't seen many other kids my age, since it's summer.
Sometimes, I wish you were still here. Maybe then I'd have someone to talk to, instead of writing stupid letters.

Spring 3, Year 6
Dear Mom,
Sorry for not writing you a letter all this time. I know Dad says things will get better the longer we're here, but this island is still really boring. There are some cool places, like that old lighthouse and an arcade, but it's not the same when there's no one to talk to. Dad's been extra busy lately, he says he may not be able to make it home until summer. We've almost been living here for a year, and he's only been back for a few weeks. I don't really mind anymore, but it means I can't even do things with him.
Well, maybe there's something good. Remember June, that kid I told you about before? I saw him again. First was the Tomato Festival. It's like dodgeball with tomatoes or something. I was on his team. He used me as a shield, which was a real jerk thing to do, but I met his little brother. And then he's in my class at school. And then I saw him at the arcade. He was kind of nice to me. I think he's my friend now. Or something like that.
I don't know about school here. The teacher is nice, but I'm in a class with a bunch of little kids, so it seems like a waste of time. I don't like going.
...I still don't really get this whole writing letters thing or how it's supposed to make me feel better. It just reminds me that I don't have anyone real to talk to.
