The great Red River runs east to west and marks the northern border of Landing. A number of tributaries branch off of the Red, but the largest tributary, the Little Red, runs straight through Landing and dumps into Homestead Lake. The Little Red and a number of springs feed this lake, which is two miles across at its widest and very deep.

The banks of Homestead Lake are sandy and give way to Shelterwood to the south and the Great Plains to the north. Houses, businesses, and docks are scattered along the banks of the lake.
