For years shapeshifters have been using humans.
Somehow they kept this all a secret up until now.

No one expect the reason, but it close to how vampires used them.
All except they didn't kill them.
So for every born shapeshifter, something has to happen...
A bond to a human and a shapeshifter has to be made,
if not the shapeshifter will die in two weeks time after birth.
Once the bond is made the shapeshifter watches out for the human and becomes their guardian.
The reason for this bond is because shapeshifters shift into humans as well as animals, having humans around makes it easier to shift into humans.
If and when the human does die, the shapeshifter will still live, but shifting doesn't come as easy.
Thats all alright because if young, the little shifter can be bond to a different human for easier shifting.
This is why the shifters need humans.. Yet once the humans are bond they are also loyal to the shifter and they won't let the secret out.
Now if the shifter dies before the human, the human will also die within two weeks, but normally the death comes right after the shifters death.
