The Polish metal band Behemoth was originally formed back in 1991 by Adam Darski, better known to fans as Nergal. What started out as true black metal steadily grew into their blackened death metal sound they are known for nowadays.

The original lineup for Behemoth consisted of Nergal on bass, guitar, and vocals, Desecrator also on guitar, and Baal on drums. Their first demos were what people would call the traditional black metal sound. It was their third piece, ...From the Pagan Vastlands that caught the attention of Polish record labels, one of which released it. Full-length albums Sventevith (Storming Near the Baltic), Grom, and Pandemonic Incantations followed in 1995, 1996, and 1998 respectively. Between that time Behemoth toured round their native Poland and saw the arrival and departure of various members. Members included Obscure Perversion, Baeon von Orcus, Frost, Marduk, Mefisto, and Les Chaos, the latter two coming and going between '97 and '99. But it wasnt until '97 when Zbigniew R. Promiński joined the band under the name Inferno. '98 saw their departure from Polish label Pagan Records and signing with the Italian Avantgarde Music, a relationship which shortly after produced Satanica. Said album solidified the band's transformation into the blackened death metal sound they're known for.

Until 2003 Behemoth saw members Novy and Havok, record deals with Mystic and Century Media, and full-length releases Thelma .6 and Zos Kia Cultus (Here and Beyond). Behemoth gained a lot of praise in the metal community and toured through many countries, including three North American tours in 2003 alone, aside from others. 2004 more importantly saw the arrival of members Tomasz Wróblewski and Patryk Sztyber, better known as Orion and Seth respectively. This solidified the band lineup, and it has stayed that way up until the present. Their combined efforts spawned albums seven, eight and nine, Demigod, The Apostasy and Evangelion, as well as many headlining tours.

As of late, frontman Nergal was diagnosed with leukemia, but thanks to a generous bone marrow donation and a successful surgery, he is in the healing process.
