Part One

A bell rang loudly through the entire Elamon Academy campus. Inside one of the dormatories, a boy curled up tighter in his bed, pulling the covers over his head as if to drown out the sound of the bell. The door to his room opened and a girl, roughly around 19 with long brown hair and deep blue eyes – which were currently narrowed in frustration –, stomped into the room. The boy, as if sensing the anger of the person who just entered his room, pulled the sheets tighter around him.
“Get up!” said the girl.
The boy merely groaned in response.
“I said, get up!” she repeated, moving over to the bed.
“Lemme sleep…”
“Are you even listening to me?”
“Yes, now go away, I’m tired…”
The girl stamped her foot in frustration.
“Roln Silverling, if you don’t get up right now, so help me I’ll… I’ll…”
She stamped her foot again and pointed at the boy, Roln. Instantly a ball of ice-cold water fell down onto his face. He sat up at once and scowled at the girl, his blue eyes narrowed in annoyed frustration at having been forced to wake up. Pushing off his soaked sheets, he shook his blond hair dry. The girl squealed and backed away as water splashed everywhere.
“Watch it!” she cried, but there was a hint of humor in her voice now.
“Geez Arianna, did you have to drop your water on my head like that?” Roln said as he jumped out of his bed. “And you know that this is the boy’s dorm, you aren’t supposed to be-”
“Oh don’t give me that,” Arianna replied, sticking her tongue at him. “You know full well that girls are allowed up here. It’s the girls’ dorm that’s supposed to only have one gender. Besides, you’ve let me up here before.”
Roln sighed and rummaged around his closet for some clothes.
“Or are you trying to say you don’t want me around anymore,” Arianna continued, this time she pretended to be sad. She and Roln had been dating for two years now, ever since she had arrived at the Academy. He was a year older than her, and it had taken months to get him to notice her, but finally he did.
Roln looked over at Arianna and smiled. “You know I didn’t mean it like that, Ria.”
Arianna giggled, blushing slightly as Roln used her nickname.
“So, you ready to go?” she asked.
“Might as well,” he groaned.
“Oh don’t be like that. It’s not every day that you get to graduate from this place.”
Roln heard the sadness that she had tried to hide in her voice. “Hey, don’t worry. I won’t be that far away. Remember, Headmaster Rowan is funding the new research facility that I’ll be running. They’ve already started construction on it, and it’s just in the next city.”
“Just… promise you’ll visit, or at least call me?”
Roln smiled and walked over to her, pulling her into a gentle hug. Arianna hugged him tight, burying her head in his chest. He held her gently for a few minutes before tilting her head up and kissing her lightly.
“I promise. You’ll still be coming to stay there after you graduate next year, right?”
Arianna nodded. “Uh-huh. I’ve already picked out my classes. I’ll be continuing in science and education, and Headmaster Rowan agreed to let me take fourth-year Elemental Studies because I’ve helped you so much with the class already.”
Roln smiled and kissed her forehead. “I love you.”
Arianna blushed hard and hid her head in his chest again. It was the first time Roln had said that to her out loud. She had been hoping that he’d say it to her for the past two years, but still, hearing him say that made her heart race.
“I love you too,” she said quietly.

Roln blushed and hugged her again. Suddenly the door opened and a brown-haired boy burst in.
“Thunder-head, you better hurry and- Oh, sorry.”
Kyle Kuiso, Roln’s best friend, stood in the doorway, shifting from foot to foot uncomfortably. Roln knew that Kyle liked Arianna, but he had missed his chance long ago, and Roln intended to keep it that way. It wasn’t that he didn’t feel guilty about being with his best friend’s crush, but Arianna had chosen him, and he had fallen for her. He meant what he had said to her. He DID love her, and he wouldn’t change the last two years for the world.
“What is it Rocks-for-brains?” Roln asked jokingly.
“When you’re done here, the ceremony’s about to start.”
Roln looked at the clock in his room. Kyle was right. How did he manage to sleep in so long? It should have been Kyle who did that, seeing as he had been staying up the past few weeks working on his speech as their class speaker.
“That’s why I told you to get up,” Arianna said in a mock accusatory voice.
“Sorry, tell the others that I’ll be down in a sec.”
Kyle nodded and left, looking over his shoulder slightly at Arianna and Roln.
Roln sighed after his friend left. Sometimes he didn’t know what to do. Arianna put her head against his shoulder.
“You’ll let me know when you find someplace to stay, right?” she asked.
“Yeah, I should be getting one soon. Kyle and I had found a good spot a few years ago, but I have enough money to get it now. It helps that he’ll be paying for the upfront payment.”
“Why’s he doing that?”
Roln laughed. “He was an idiot back when we were first-years and made a bet with me. The deal was that whichever one of us was the worst student by the end of our fourth year would have to pay for the first payment on the house.”
Arianna snorted in amusement. She couldn’t imagine Roln losing that bet. Once he had set his mind on something, he didn’t stop until he accomplished it. Her friends poked fun at her about having a boyfriend as hard-headed as she was. It didn’t annoy her, but their jibes did get on her nerves, especially when they got on her back about never calling the two of them ‘boyfriend and girlfriend’. She’d never thought of Roln as her boyfriend, and never thought of herself as his girlfriend, because that would mean that she would have to belong to him. The idea of ‘belonging’ to someone, of being given a title that meant she had become a thing that the other person owned, was something she detested. Roln never put the pressure of that on her, and that was one of the things she loved most about him.
She was snapped out of her thoughts as another bell rang through the Academy.
“That’s the bell for the start of the ceremony,” she said, unhooking her arms from Roln’s waist. “I should let you go before you’re late to your own graduation.”
Roln nodded and kissed her once more. “See you there.”
They left the room together and walked down the halls until they reached the building’s courtyard. They parted and Roln hurried to his spot in the line while Arianna went to find a seat.
***

Two hours later, Roln was back in his room, piling his belongings into his suitcases. A knock on the door caught his attention. Turning around, he saw Arianna standing in the doorway, holding a small bag.
“Hey,” he said, smiling. “What’s up? Came to help me pack?”
“Not really,” she laughed. “But I might as well, you’d just stuff everything into one bag otherwise.”
Roln laughed, “You know me too well.”
The two worked in silence for the most part, laughing occasionally at an item that was a shared joke between them, or commenting on such an object. An hour passed. Roln’s bags were packed with everything he could fit in. He and Arianna sat on the bed looking over at the items that would have to be left behind.

“Hey, remember when this was taken?” Arianna asked, holding up a picture.
In it were Roln and Kyle, the latter of whom had an arm around the first’s shoulder to make sure he wouldn’t run out of the picture. Behind them was the Academy entrance, all decorated for a party. The two friends were dressed in formal attire, Kyle’s outfit was the ideal look, whereas Roln’s looked like he had been dragged into it and had no idea how half of it was put on. Kyle had a huge grin on his face and held up two fingers to the camera in the age-old “Victory” V. Roln had a slightly annoyed look on his face, as if he would have rather been somewhere else, but there was also a hint of excitement in his eyes, betraying his true feelings of actually wanting to go to whatever event was going on.
“Yeah, that was when you guys dragged me to prom,” Roln laughed, taking the picture from her.
“Oh shush,” she teased. “You didn’t seem to mind dancing that much.”
He blushed and stuck his tongue out at her. She laughed and leaned against him, wrapping her arms around his waist. He smiled and held her. They stayed that way for several minutes before Arianna broke the silence. “Do you need a place to stay until the house is bought?”
“Are you offering to let me sleep over at your dorm?” he teased.
She blushed hard. “Not exactly. I have to go to my parents for a bit over the summer, and I was wondering if you’d like to come along.” Please do, she thought. I don’t want to be alone with them this summer.
Roln thought for a bit. It would take a few weeks before Kyle could seal the deal on the house, which meant he would have to either stay at the school until then, or find someplace else. He had been going to get a room at a hotel, but if Arianna and her parents would put up with him until the house was bought… “Okay,” he said, smiling at her.
A look of relief washed over her face and she hugged him tight. “Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!”
Roln laughed and hugged her back. “You can be such a little kid sometime, Ria.”
“Shut it.”
That only made him laugh more.

Two Weeks Later…

Roln lay on his back, his eyes closed, listening to the sound of the waves crashing onto the shore of Arianna’s parents’ summer house. The sun was nice and warm, and the sand was comfortable. There was a slight breeze, which brought the salty sea-water smell up to him. The past two weeks had been amazing. Arianna’s parents were nice folks, normal humans with no elemental powers like himself, Arianna, Kyle, and the rest of the Academy. He still found it hard to believe that there were people who couldn’t use any elements. He had been able to control Electricity his entire life, so the concept of not using elements was pretty foreign to him. Despite their lack of powers, Arianna’s parents were amazing. Her mother was an excellent cook and insisted upon giving him fourth and fifth helpings of every meal she made. Arianna’s father was just as welcoming, though he had made it very clear just what would happen if Roln did anything to upset his ‘little water gem.’
He and Arianna hadn’t had much time to themselves, probably because her parents wouldn’t let them out of their sight. However, Arianna had managed to give her family the slip several times. He smiled, remembering his fifth night at the house. She snuck him outside and together they had watched the stars on the roof. There had been several shooting stars that night, and on each one he made the same wish. I want to stay with her forever, and to always make her smile. They spent the night on the roof, waking up just in time to sneak back into their rooms before her parents got up. Roln was so lost in thought that he only realized he wasn’t alone when a large amount of water was dumped on his head. He sat up, choking a bit on the water. “What,” he coughed, “what the hell Ria?”
“You weren’t listening to me,” she replied, thumping him on the back to get rid of the rest of the water. “I’ve been trying to get your attention for the past fifteen minutes.”
“Well, you’ve got it now,” he said, coughing up the last of the water. “What’s so important that you felt you needed to drown me?”
“Kyle called. He finished making the deal with the people who owned that house you were talking about. He needs you to come back as soon as possible.”
Roln heard the disappointment in her voice and knew that she had been hoping that he would stay until school started back up in a month and a half. He placed his hand on her cheek and smiled gently. “Hey, don’t worry, I’ll come back as soon as things are settled, okay?”
“Uh-huh,” she replied, nodding happily, and hugged him.
***

Roln said goodbye to Arianna’s parents, who said that they’d be more than happy to have him back after his business was finished, and got into the cab that would take him back to the city. Once the summer house was out of sight, Roln sighed, leaning into the backseat of the cab.
“Yous gots a sweet gal back der,” the driver called over to him. “Nice family too.”
“Yeah,” Roln replied, smiling, he looked out the window. “You have no idea.

Part Two

For Roln and Arianna, the summer passed by too quickly. All too soon, they found themselves outside Elamon Academy’s entrance gates. The first day of the start of Arianna’s final year at the Academy wasn’t something either of them had looked forward to, Arianna in particular.
“You promise you’ll call me tonight?” she asked Roln, looking up at him.
“Promise,” he replied, smiling down at her. “It might be late, I’m not sure how long it’ll take to get all the staff together and the kids under control.”
“I’ll be up.”
“Then that’s something good I have to look forward to.”
“Having second thoughts?” she teased.
“To be honest, yeah. I’m not sure if I’m cut out to teach kids like us to use their powers the right way.”
“You’ll be fine,” she laughed and kissed his cheek. “Besides, you still want to put that dream of yours to work right?”
“Yeah!” he nodded, his eyes already lighting up with the same excitement that a child’s have when asked what they wanted to be when they grew up. “To get people from all over the world, all of them with elemental powers, under the same roof; a school where all of them could go to learn how to control their abilities, grow up among their peers, and then integrate with the rest of the world! A place where Elementally gifted children from all over the world can meet and live together; learn together, without any pressure from the rest of the worlds to cause them to fight or divide into social, ethnic, or religious groups. Then, when they’ve finished here, they can bring back all they’ve learned to their own countries; not just about their abilities and education, but about each other as well! It’ll change society, maybe even the whole planet! Little by little, the entire world will learn to accept one another, get over our differences, stop fighting all the time, until eventually there will be nothing to divide us all anymore!”
“Roln, honey, you’re sparking again.”
Arianna laughed as Roln looked at himself, little sparks of electricity rolling over his body. He always did that when he got excited. Quickly he got his power back under control and took several deep breaths to calm himself. Sometimes he was more of a kid than anyone she knew, and that included Kyle and his inane ability never take anything seriously.
The bell rang throughout the campus signaling the start of the school day. Arianna hugged Roln tight and smiled when he kissed her goodbye.
“I’ll call you later,” he said.
She nodded and kissed him again before letting go of him and running to school, waving to him. Roln smiled and watched her go. His pocket buzzed and he fished his phone out. It was Kyle. He flipped it open and walked away from the Academy. “Talk to me,” he said.
“You at the Academy saying goodbye to her?”

"Yeah."
"Hurry up, we have a few issues over here, there are a lot of students and not enough staff."
"On my way," Roln said and snapped the phone shut, flagging a taxi to take him to the facility.
Kyle was waiting for him outside the building, looking relieved when he arrived. "Thank god you're here, it's chaos in there."[
"What's happening? We should have more staff here."
"I don't know why there aren't more people here, but there's a bit of an incident with a few of the students."
"What do you mean?"
Kyle led him to
