His name…was Jason. Jason Kenneth to be exact.
He was a high school student in his last year before graduation. His grades were excellent, and he spent much of his time studying in order to maintain them. His dream…was to become a doctor. He wanted to treat illnesses that no one else could, to save people’s lives, perhaps even discover a cure for cancer. Even so, this was one of the few things that kept him going.
He was pathetic at sports, always last to be picked for a team or last to cross the finishing line in a race. As such he was a prime target for bullies, who loved to shout insults or shove him into lockers at any time they could. Jason didn’t fight back against them, he was too afraid to. Everyone knew he was the biggest coward in the school; all someone had to do was tell him a demon was hiding in the shadows, and he would run down the hall screaming. Many found it hilarious, while others just pitied him for being so gullible.
But Jason wasn’t gullible. He knew…that even if they were joking, that there was something there. Something lurking in the shadows, waiting for him to enter so it could devour him. It wasn’t just in the shadows either; places like an abounded house at night, or a cemetery, he could see them, see things barely recognizable in the darkness, and it terrified him
He had learned early on to keep this a secret from everyone else. His family was deeply religious, and once he had told them about this evil energy they thought he was possessed; told him it was a result of listening to too much rock music, and they took him to the nearest lake to be ‘purified’ which resulted in many plunges into the freezing water and reciting of religious phrases by an priest. It didn't help of course.
Everything changed, when the stranger came…
Jason first met him when he was at the bus stop before school. He was a little wary of the man, but he didn't appear hostile. Then things quickly got weird. The stranger began to talk about evil things, about shadows that felt alive, about demons that hid in the dark. about the evil energies that seemed to exist in the world. Jason was amazed; how did this man know about these things? Intrigued, he then told the stranger that he felt these things as well, and was amazed when the stranger said he believed him.
Over the next few weeks they met each other a few more times, talking about the nameless evils that they alone could sense. Jason could not remember a time when he had felt so good; it was wonderful to have someone who listened to him, who didn't rebuke him or shake his head sadly at his fear. He was able to confide in the stranger about how afraid he felt all the time, and how powerless he was to do anything about it.
The stranger in turn told him many things. He told him that the monsters he saw in the shadows were real, and they were out to get him. He was being hunted, along with every other human. Humans were merely food for these monsters; they were considered livestock to be fattened up and killed at any time they desired.
The last time he met the stranger, he had asked Jason to meet him at a park after school. It was just after sunset, when everything was beginning to grow dark. Jason hated being out at this hour. The shadows were always so large at this time, their form reaching out with grasping hands, hoping to drag him in…
“I've come to offer you a chance of a lifetime” The stranger told him. “I know how afraid you are of the monsters that lurk in the shadows, and I’m here to change that.” He then produced a paper along with a pen; a form to be exact.
“We don't have to be the hunted anymore. We can become something more…yes; we…can become the Hunters…
Jason looked at the man, and the outstretched pen and paper he held in his hands. It was…a tempting offer. Normally he would of thought the man was insane, but considering what they had discussed over the last few weeks…
He was tired of being scared all the time. He didn't want to be just another person, waiting to be picked off by the nameless predators that longed to devour him. Perhaps…if he could become a ‘hunter’ he wouldn't be afraid anymore?
The student wrote down his name on the paper….
And Eta five was born.
