They really are. It's a shame Light's smarts didn't get steered in another direction.

I'm really mixed on Death Note. On the one hand, it's pretty good as a battle of wits and I really liked L. On the other hand, I feel like the series could have been a lot better if it had been a seinen series and targeted at a more mature audience. Don't establish Light as a megalomaniac and don't have him kill people simply for disagreeing with his goals (or have him reach that point later in the story). Address the fact that Light killing criminals can and will sometimes result in killing someone that was wrongfully convicted. Address Kira's impact on regular people; some people are going to worship him, and others are going to be terrified that they'll be killed over something they did.* Consider his impact in other areas as well; Kira would have a massive impacts on politics and entertainment, and this is hardly the extent of that influence. The series never did any of that, and the world itself ended up feeling kind of empty as a result. I don't know if writing the series for a more mature audience would have gotten us better female characters, though.
Also, Kira worshipers. Oh jeez, Kira worshipers. It's established in the first chapter that Light wants to be a god; he is not an anti-hero. I cannot understand how someone can read this series and have no issues whatsoever with anything that Light did over the course of the series, let alone want Kira to actually exist. I try not to let fandom affect my opinion of a series, but the DN fandom is insane.
* It doesn't necessarily have to be stealing/murder/etc. For example, I would be terrified that Kira might decide that being LGBT is enough of a "crime" to warrant death.

The fandom is pretty crazed...that I will grant.
Though they're not the only ones. You've got nutcases for every anime.

rahna The fandom is pretty crazed...that I will grant. Though they're not the only ones. You've got nutcases for every anime. Oh, certainly. But most fanbases don't seem to reach the level that DN's does, as least from what I've seen. Fans defending villains isn't exclusive to the DN fandom, but aside from Light I don't see many fans who will say that their misunderstood villain was completely right or that the real world would be better off if the villain carried out his plan here. There are definitely crazies in every fandom, though. I will agree there.

I watched about the first three episodes and about the last five episodes, so I may not be the best person to ask about Death Note. But I am going to try and watch it in its entirety at some later date.
