Hello everybody,

I was wondering what your plans were this year for Beltane. I thought for myself, since it will be my first official celebration/ritual, I'd take things on the easy side and not over-complicate things. I'm going to light a small candle, pray, and thank each of the women I have come across who have given me strength and wisdom, by placing an offering stone for each of them in a bowl of water (as well as one for myself), and maybe add some flowers/ribbons to decorate the altar. Sweet, and simple smile

So! What will you be up to? I'd love to hear about it, if you're willing to share! heart

I think for the Crossquarter- I want to try and get together with the coven. If I can't, I do something with my family at home.

I'm planning on doing something related to the Vanir (especially Freyr and Freyja), but I haven't figured out the details yet. I want to study some more and see if I can get a better idea of what is commonly done for them or what they might like.

Whoa. We're already talking about Beltane. Isn't it still like, six month off?

Esiris: I hope you can get together with your coven! That would be wonderful smile

zatarrah: What's the Vanir? I've never heard of that before smile Can you explain it to me a little?

Renkon Root: Beltane is next month. Unless you're in the Southern hemisphere. I didn't think about that. In that case, what are you doing for... Yule? I don't know off the top of my head what you'd be celebrating in the Southern hemisphere...

It'd be interesting- my HPS would likely do some lessons, but I think it's likely the rest of it would be for initiates only- so we'd just be hanging out.

It's a group of Norse gods.

The opposite quarter of May is November- so it'd be Samhain, but I don't get the impression Renkon Root celebrates those holidays- I could be wrong though.

Like Esiris says, they're a group of Norse gods...sort of. I personally like the theory that they're gods from a more widespread religion that were integrated into the Norse pantheon, but at any rate the way we know them now is as part of Norse religion. They're generally looked at as being more connected to nature, fertility, and agricultural religion than the Aesir (the main group of gods in Norse religion).

I haven't really worked much with them or anything- but I have a Norse Pagan for a roomie and I picked up a little here and there. I somehow got the impression that the different groups were gods to different tribes of Norse people, and that some of the wars the tribes had were reflected in the lore of the gods.

That is one of the theories. I think it might be the most common. But our resources on Norse religion and mythology are pretty limited and it's not really known for certain. I'm new to it, but Ellis-Davidson seems to suggest that it's not that simple and this was just Snorri's interpretation, and I'm pretty sure she was the one I first saw link them to fertility gods. I liked that explanation because I came to Norse paganism in the first place because of my interest in the fertility gods in other cultures - I thought Freyja and Freyr seemed to have similar traits and I wanted to learn more.

It's interesting- I don't know much about it, so thanks for sharing!

I'm not sure what my family and I will do. Last Beltane I was just starting off, so this will be the first time I actually celebrate.

Fwiw - SPG seems to suggest Freyja likes strawberries. A sweet, chilled white wine or sparkling white might be a good bet. I think that's what I ususally give them, if I'm not in the mood for mead. (Here you can even get a strawberry sparkling wine.)

For me it's Winternights, and I'll be honouring Hel and probably Oðinn as well. And the beloved dead.

Thanks! I was leaning in that direction and it's good to have an outside opinion to back it up. smile

Living in a small town thats mostly christian and mormon its hard to get my friends to celebrate with me. I want to set up a may pole and cast a circle but they are so on the edge about it. I know one guy who says he will dance and make a circle with me but he is not wiccan or pegan or anything so i dont know how well it will work with just me and him.

One of my friends is also wiccan but from what i can tell she doesnt want to celebrate traditionally...

So i looks like I'm just going to bake some oatmeal cake to share with whoever wants some and make a daisy chain. (tho we dont have any daisys that grow here) We have alot of dandiloins tho perhaps i'll use those.

Since you're Wiccan- can't you make it to your covenstead and celebrate with members of your tradition?
