Snap. Broom's ear twitched, head turning quickly to check the disturbance. Just a twig snapping somewhere. He sighed and continued surveying the horizon. Somehow he always felt like an impostor, a silly member of the Corps playing at being an Outrider. Any moment a real Outrider would come along to send him back to his mother.
He still checked in on her fairly regularly, for a grown stag. Some might even find it embarrassing how he relied on her, and she on him, but she was so proud to see her first calf grown and guarding the herd. The thought of what she'd do if let anything harm the herd... well, it was one of the few things that kept him at his post, no matter what.
His father hadn't lived to see him become an Outrider, but that rarely even crossed Broom's mind. He'd barely known his father, after all. The old stag had died when he was quite young. Besides, Treun had fathered other bucks on other hinds. Sometimes he ran into them, but honestly he didn't know them very well either.
The young stag's nostrils suddenly flared; it smelled like... no, it was just a badger's scent on the breeze. Guarding the herd's borders might be a bit dull at times, but at least if it was dull, there was no trouble.

There was a quiet shuffling in the grass nearby as something, or rather someone, approached. Instead of the footfalls of lera though, it was the hoofsteps of another deer. The towering crown of antlers with its impressive array of tines earned with the passing seasons, marked him as a royal. A captain perhaps? Well, maybe at one time that seemed ages ago. But instead it was the lord himself, having strayed from the Home Oak and was now leisurely walking the hillsides. It had been some time now since he had challenged and beaten Fell Lore, and the majority of his offspring were grown. The middle aged stag now patrolling the borders of his territory in what was becoming a bit of a custom. "Look sharp, young Outrider, any news today?" Brychan's voice was kindly and in high spirits. It was a lovely spring day after all. His antlers fresh out of velvet, which marked the soon to come breeding season. He was feeling lively enough to leap across the mountaintops, but simply settled for the stroll.

At the rustling sound behind him, Broom did a sharp about-face. The voice of a stag didn't entirely surprise him; as he'd imagined, it must be an older Outrider coming to check on him.
This, though, he was entirely unprepared for.
"N-no," the buck stammered out, and hastily added, "My Lord." Though he'd never met the Lord of the Herd before, the starry stag was quite easy to spot, and after all Broom had grown up around a large number of the stag's offspring. The Firebringer Lord was rather prolific, after all. There were nearly as many stars among the Herla as in the sky, Broom sometimes thought. It made him feel so plain and... just... brown.
When this Anlach came, it would be Broom's first time standing with a hind. If he even managed to win any. That was another of his anxieties, but at least it was one he didn't have to worry about just yet.
Best to just focus on the moment. Try to make conversation. "But then, no news is good news, right?" He'd been hoping it would come out in a joking manner, but his tone sounded stilted. D'oh. And it was sort of a dumb thing to say, too. So much for a good first impression.

Brychan just chuckled at the apparently surprised young stag, who seemed to not have been expecting him.
"Indeed it is. Although just about every stag looks for a little excitement now and then."
The star spotted lord now walked up to stand next to Broom, tilting his head slightly to look the younger male over. Unfortunately, he hadn't had the opportunity to meet one on one with every member of the herd.
"I don't believe we've met. What's your name?"
If anything, he should at least be acquainted with the Outriders whose duty it was to protect the herd.

The older stag did have a point there; even anxious bucks like Broom sometimes got bored and wanted to see some action. He bobbed his head slightly in acknowledgment, "True... but excitement for an Outrider usually means trouble. Boredom is a small price to pay for the safety of the herd."
As the Lord approached him, clearly assessing him, he shifted from hoof to hoof. He wasn't really undersized, but Broom knew he was hardly very impressive. "I'm Broom, my Lord." Being so close, he couldn't help but examine Brychan in return. Up close, the royal stag's antlers were very impressive; undoubtedly the largest in the herd. It wasn't hard to see why Brychan was the herd's leader.

Brychan turned his gaze away from Broom eventually, seemingly satisfied with what he saw of the buck. The lord nodding quietly in agreement with his words.
"You have a good head under those antlers. You know what's important, but that doesn't mean you have to succumb to boredom."
There was a time when he too had been an Outrider, in the same position as Broom was. It felt like it had been only yesterday, but my how the time had flown.
"Broom, then. I think I heard mention of you from one of my sons." Probably Aidan or Campion, he didn't expect that Telwyn would even remember something like Broom's name.

"I--er," teh stag suddenly fumbled for something to say. "Thank you, sir." He ducked his head shyly, unaccustomed to compliments. Well, from anyone other than his mother.
At the mention of Brychan's sons, Broom lifted his head back up and nodded again, not without surprise. Even as a calf, moon markings had been a common sight. He'd been apprehensive of the other fawns even then, but not out of any anxiety over their sire's rank. He'd been too young to know then. But he'd known them by sight, and several by name. The fact that they might remember his own name too was something that had just never crossed his mind. "Yes, sir. I'm of an age with several of your sons." Aidan, Thalerok, and Cearuil were among those he was closest in age to, and there were even more of Brychan's daughters born the same season as himself.
He couldn't help but wonder what they might have said of him; an impulse struck him to ask, but he couldn't quite summon the courage. "I've never known them very well, though," he added lamely instead.

A kindly smile appeared on the lord's muzzle as the younger stag spoke. The slight apprehension was easy to see, and not at all unexpected, but he hoped that Broom would loosen up a bit. This Lord didn't bite after all, and he would rather have the respect of his Outriders, not their fear. This is why he tried to get to know as many as he could, but that was a rather daunting task indeed.
"Well..." he started, once Broom's words had trailed off. "It is a very large herd. One can't expect to know everyone well. I'm still trying to accomplish that myself." It was indeed a task that would likely take a lifetime! Everyone knew him, or at least of him, but Brychan was just one stag.
"Who are your parents?" That seemed a slightly random question, but not a pointless one. Perhaps if hew knew the young stag's parents, he would make an easier connection with him.
