SECOND QUEST LETTER

Now you arrive at the peak of your temperamental journey into the belly of the beast from hell. Are you prepared to face your fears, to journey into the unknown, to get back up when the odds are against you? I sure hope so. You look so weak, child. As forewarned, each letter you receive from this point on can be good or it can be cursed! Did I scare you? Good! You need to be scared, scared of what you are about to face!

Pier 9 is where your journey will begin, on a notorious ship called ‘The Hellion’. She had sailed into deserted areas and barely made it back alive. Now, there is a catch. They are not expecting you, so you have to sneak aboard The Hellion and remain hidden as they quest to the north into the freezing Arctic, three weeks across the perilous frozen waters and through the battering howling storms.

Your ship journey is just the first step of the quest. When you board upon the land known as Ice Oasis… therein, you must brave the freezing wilderness to find a rare jewel. A jewel which, in comparison to the Hope Diamond, shines brighter. Upon reaching the Ice Oasis, your next letter awaits you.

You better hurry, child. The ship will be leaving on the morrow! Beware of the dangers on this ship for no mere mortal with weak of heart can survive it. Do you have what it takes? I sure hope so. Good luck. You will need it.

Liliac had folded and unfolded her letters what felt like a million times. She swallowed deeply, confusion lining her face as she stood a block from the pier. She could see the tips of the sails for the ship she was supposed to board and she could see what the second letter meant by it had always barely made it back alive. The ship looked like it was being held together by only hopes and dreams.. and whatever dreams the men crewing this ship had, were surely nightmares. She shifted her weight.. having to sneak on meant that she really couldn't carry any sort of large bag.

Given that her quest letter said that she would be in the cold she hoped to have something larger to carry her stuff because of how cold the weather would be- instead she had one messenger bag, and was wearing a pair of jeans, under some black wind pants, and a tank top, with a long sleeve shirt, and a hoodie, under her dark hooded parka jacket. To anyone else looking at her she would look crazy, already a bead of sweat was going down her face, but for the end of march at least the weather was still relatively cold so she didn't look too crazy. In her bag she had another two shirts, two pants and some undies as well as two pairs of thick wool socks.

Suddenly her eyes caught two boys playing to the side of her, they were both banging large sticks against posts and anything they could find.. most likely as they grew older they would find more things to get in trouble with. "Hey Boys..." She called them over, hoping that taking a chance on these kids wouldn't cost her the whole quest. She searched her persons for something to give them that she wouldn't need for the quest. Finding nothing really that could interest them she fidgeted until they reached her. "Want to do something really.. dangerous?" She said wiggling her eyebrows. "I bet, that you would be too scared, after all you just walk around bored barely doing anything but banging puny sticks on crap.." She was taking a leap insulting them but she hoped it worked.

"I bet that you can't hide this bag" She said smugly "In one of those barrells going on that ship" She nodded at pier 9 where the ship was and where they were starting to load supplies.. "WITHOUT! " She said wagging a finger at them. "getting caught" she dropped her voice to a whisper and laughed as if it was all some great game.If this works, she thought to herself then at least my stuff will be on board.. then I just need to sneak on afterwards

Liliac tried to hide the desperation from her face as she watched them mull over the idea. Straightening up she put her hands on her hips and sighed as if super bored. "well...?" She asked her eye brows arching.. " Do you think you could handle such a thrill? Or are you going to go back to beating the posts?" She smirked, driving the nail in that what they were previously were doing was just childs play, and she was offering them some real fun.

The bigger of the two boys frowned and dropped his stick. "We AINT scared lady.." He stated sticking out his lip. "Gimme that bag and I'll prove it to you.." He reached out and snagged the bag from Liliac's shoulder then pushing his smaller friend he growled "common..you gotta help too" The second boy seemed more reluctant but he went jogging down the pier after his friend.

Liliac watched and only when they were far enough away did she breath a little steadier. "oh man.." she whispered to herself as she crept closer to the ship. "I really hope they don't dunk it in a barrel with liquid.. or steal anything.." Her heart pounding she knew she couldn't watch them the whole time, she had to sneak on too. Turning she studied the ship and looked for ways in. As the crew moved barrels in on the ship she glanced around the pier - she needed a diversion... and the two little boys were already gone - probably back up the road to look for her to boast of their success.

Standing in a shadowed doorway of an old warehouse she decided it'd be best to sneak on at the last minute. She stood there watching, getting tired as each minute ticked by. She unfolded the letter from Gui and Lutrena and sighed What kind of quest are you sending me on? And why to such a cold place Liliac looked up at the skies knowing that on top of the building watching her was her small owl companion. She had no idea if Silver would follow her on this quest, but she figured that the owl would make up her own mind when the time came on to sneak onto the ship.

As if attracted by her thoughts Silver flew down to Liliac and she smiled as the bird landed on her shoulder nuzzling her softly. "You think I can do this?" she whispered softly, a bit of sadness in the words. As her eyes darted towards the ship, it seemed that most everyone had finished loading the ship. Glancing back and forth from the ship to her steady companion she smiled softly, the redheaded woman cooed softly whispering to her companion. "Silver do you think you could distract them for me? Maybe spook them a bit.. you know how superstitious some sailors are.. " Though the bird companion did not speak "human" it was like as the thoughts formed in Liliac's mind that those same images of the plan were also sent to her small winged friend.

Liliac watched as her silvery owl spread her wings and took off into the air cruising over the ship. The owl cooed and hooted as it took quick dives towards the ship's deck and the men on it. As Liliac picked up on the commotion she darted towards the rail leading towards the deck, hoping that since the sun was starting to set and she was in all black she could hopefully get on with minimal attention to herself. As she snuck towards the hold lock, she froze, a man was stumbling towards her. oh god! She thought and looked around wildly for Silver. Suddenly the bird dropped down hooting as it snipped at the man's sleeve making him swing wildy towards the air and almost fall over.

Liliac took that moment to run the rest of the way down into the hold and cram herself behind some barrels. When the ship would start to move then she would look for her stuff. She hoped that silver would be ok and not trapped by some of the crew members with a net. Please be careful Silver! She thought intensely with her mind. As she settled down she almost screamed in the dark as something small and hairy ran over one of her hands. Snatching it away she decided that it would be best if she did not lay down to sleep, least something crawl on her face. She shivered at the thought, not wanting to know what diseases the creatures on this ship carried.. and that included the crew members. Hugging her knees to herself she closed her eyes waiting for the rumbling and rocking of the ship to alert her to their movement towards her second destination.
PostPosted: Thu Mar 31, 2011 7:40 pm

She felt a low rumbling and scraping as the boat pulled away from the dock, the noises as if protesting the very fact that it was leaving port. The ship seemed to dislike the journey ahead as much as Liliac did. She slowly stood up in the dark hold, feeling her way around and stopping occasionally to listen for sounds of anyone else there as she searched for her bag. She pried open the barrels and did a sniff test before sticking her hand in.. no need for her to stick her hand quickly into a barrel that smelled of dead fish. The barrels that she couldn't open she figured her bag was not in because the boys wouldn't have been able to open them either.

Finally after what felt like an hour of searching she found a barrel that smelled like dirt and a faint musty smell. Reaching carefully in she was rewarded with the feel of the stuffed fabric that was her bag surrounded by a large quantity of potatoes. She wouldn't be able to check through all her supplies until later when she had more light, but at least she had her things and could fish around for food if she got hungry or whatever. Specifically now she wanted the blanket that she had packed to pull around her to give her more warmth and protection from the animals that were also in the hold. She closed the lid of the barrel but counted them as she went back to another corner to hide so that she would know where they were in case she wanted to nick some from the ship.

Wrapping the blanket around her she closed her eyes again, trying to get a few minutes of sleep. It was only after an hour or so of sleep that she awoke because she had to pee. Crap.. what am i supposed to do about that hiding down here in this miserable hole.. There was no way that she was going to pee in a corner only to accidentally sit in it again later. Its not like it smelled nice down there anyway.

Finally Liliac could hold it no longer, she felt along the hold and peed in the area farthest away from her previous huddle corner. Thankfully she had not felt sea sick yet now she was worried about her own "smell" making her feel sick depending on how long it took for her to get to her destination. Making her way back to her cuddled area she could hear some squeaking from her fellow neighbors in the hold. As long as I dont feel a snake slither over me I'm gonna be ok As her eyes adjusted she could make out very faint lines in the side of the bulk that she assumed were "hatches" that could be used to see out of or shoot, or whatever they were used on such ships that did who knows what kind of pirating or so on the seas.

Sighing she hoped that her beloved Silver was making out ok. She would move to the sides to open one of them, or attempt to, later when she was sure that the crew above was well settled on their journey far enough that they would not be able to turn away if they caught her down in their hold. She hoped that their cook had enough food to at least make one meal on their journey without coming to go through the barrels.

Liliac hadn't heard anything "unusual" - if you call, cursing and laughter and thunking around normal that is - so she decided to make her way towards the port hole on the side of the ship. She could barely make out the faint line of the light that was creeping through higher up on the wall. She felt around the edges of the window but was unable to find a sort of release. She couldn't quite reach the top of it and she thought maybe there would be some sort of latch. She rotated a barrel closer to the wall and crawled on top of it feeling around again, her fingers felt the latch as the ship took a large "roll" as it hit a wave on that side, she tumbled off the barrel with a screech. [s**t!/i] She thought as she hit the ground of the hold with a loud thump. She felt a little dampness under her hand and backside oh please let that be sea water and not pee she made a face as she struggled up but froze as she heard some thumping coming towards the hold and starting down the steps to the door that led to her area. She clamped her hand over her mouth, forgetting of course the previous dampness, and cursed herself she had forgotten not to scream because of the crew members oh god oh god don't let them find me.. what is that smell? yep.. smelled very.... off, it was likely she either landed in some of her sloshed around pee or that there were some even grosser things on the floor of the hold than she realized. She removed her trembling hand and tried to squeeze back behind some barrels once more.

"Captain! Somethin's amiss down here - these barrels have been moved about!" the shout came from the far side. Liliac didn't know how anyone could expect "order" when the barrels seemed to have no set way they were lugged down there and placed up against the wall. She froze hoping they'd leave and not find her. "Samson, sam! Com'ere boy! What kind of crap is this! Next time secure the hold barrels better and dont let them roll about when the ship moves! When we get to port you better set this right or else you know the drill!"

Liliac breathed a little easier as she heard the clunking of heavy men walking away, she almost laughed as she heard a giant burp erupt from one of them. She thought to herself as a smile played on her lips I hope that means they already ate. She stayed still a while longer before getting back up on the barrel trying to steady herself carefully as she felt for the latch once more, releasing the mechanism she breathed happily as the cool cripsy salty air hit her face. It was definately better than the musty smell of the hold. She shivered though as she moved away from the window trying to figure a way to call Silver down.

Thinking of the of the burp from earlier she could feel her own stomach clench with hunger. She had eaten before she trekked down the pier, but that was hours ago - possibly 10 or more - she had waited over two hours before even sneaking on, and with the nap.. she had no idea how long she had been down in the hold. Finding her bag, she reached around looking for one of the chocolate chip protein bars and started to munch on that while sipping on her container of water.

Liliac was weary, but no more so than Silver was. The small bird had been going back between flying and resting in the rigging of the masts in order to follow Liliac. The owl had been bonded to her since they were both smaller, and the creature always was near her human. Their connection was not of a pet and its master, but of kindred souls because Liliac was not like most humans, or totally human at all for that matter, she was a Jupiter child and could occasionally sail the skies with Silver as a rust colored owl, it was during those times that Silver felt most bonded to the human-like child and that they understood each other the most.

Though Liliac could not feel the same strong pull as Silver did to her, the bird knew that this journey would not only make their connection stronger, but the girl stronger in all her abilities as well. Silver swooped down from the rigging once more and cruised near the side of the of the ship looking for a way out of the cold, spotting the open doorway she swooped in, a little unsteady as she had lost some of her tail feathers that had given her the graceful balance of flight before the ship had left when Liliac had snuck in.

Liliac looked up as she heard a cooing noise in the darkness. She spotted the small silvery owl shivering on top of a barrel. "Oh silver!" She stood up from her corner as she walked to the bird, "thank you for your sacrifice to come with me.. I wasn't sure you would come.. You're Freezing!" She stated in a loud whisper. Unzipping her jacket she pulled the owl against her to give it some of her body warmth. When she lifted her up from the barrel it was then she saw a lone feather fall from Silver. "Your feathers...." She said miserably, knowing that it was her need to get on the ship that had caused her companion pain and the loss of who knows how many feathers. She shuffled back to the corner behind some barrels and wrapped up in the blanket once more to sleep for the rest of the night as it was getting dark out. Tomorrow I have to figure out what to do.. Should I stay here or.. go up? Her mind raced as she tried to work out the problem, drifting to sleep with her arms wrapped gently around the small creature against her chest.
PostPosted: Sun Apr 03, 2011 3:55 pm

Liliac was colder now than before, ever since she opened up that window porthole thing. She shivered in her sleep even though she was wrapped up in the blanket. Her mind was plagued by horrible dreams, of what would happen if she failed the quest. She hated the fact that all of this was hanging on the unknown, only being told what was to be expected next by a letter from a crazy person. She was fighting to stay asleep when she felt a sudden jab that awoke her from her sleeping mind fog.

" 'ey lookie what I found men!" A deep booming voice suddenly said. Liliac's mind was still confused and she struggled to sit up as she felt another jab, and then Silver burst forth from her chest area to escape. "Agh! what was that" Liliac opened her eyes as she heard the man's voice again and felt like her whole world just dropped out. They had found her and now the big burly man infront of her was swinging a stick at her owl, who already was having a hard time flying from the lost feathers from before.

"STOP THAT" She screamed as she stood up, "You'll hurt her!" The pain was evident in her voice as she lunged at the man her hand raised to strike him. However she didn't get far because he caught her wrist as she lunged, his powerful grip not only holding her too far away but also so tight that she almost fell limp with the pain. Silver flew up into the rafters of the hold escaping the man but her angry hoots could be heard from above.

"Looks like we got a fiesty one.. the captain's gonna wanna see you and yer' bird there'. The burly man said as he dragged her up the stairs. Liliac started struggling again as she was pulled along. s**t s**t s**t s**t.. the letter said not to be caught! And I only made it two days before I was caught. her mind raced before she was blinded by light when brought up in the sunlight on deck. Blinking rapidly she felt like she had been disarmed once more, not only was she still in the man's grip but now she was having a hard time seeing and her eyes were watering from the sudden change from the mostly dark hold to the bright sun on the deck.

Liliac fell hard as she was flung forward onto the deck. She made a small whimper as she felt her knee hit hard, knowing that it would be an ugly bruise later. Determined not to seem weak in front of the crew she struggled up again, and glared all around. She froze when she heard a commanding male voice, "Who are you that you dare to trespass on our ship?" She looked around looking for the source of the voice. "I am Liliac, I was sent on my own quest and needed transport." She tried to stand a little stronger. "I was pointed in this direction and told to sneak aboard and stay hidden until we reached Ice Oasis"

Her response was met with laughter. "Well it seems like you failed at that." a man moved to the front as he spoke, and based on his presence and the way he moved Liliac could tell that he was the captain. 'What's keeping me from throwing you overboard right now? It's too late to turn around and drop you back at the last port, but I have no need for a woman on my ship." He sneered and chuckled towards the men. "Though I'm sure some of these men could find a reason for you to be here, but I think then I wouldn't have any of my men doing their work." That statement got a roar of laughter from the crew, and a few cat calls.

Liliac blushed furiously both from embarrassment then anger. "I could be an asset to this crew. If you wont keep me for the journey as a passenger then keep me as part of the crew. I'm not scared of doing any task, test me. I can do whatever your men can do." She said angrily, both mad at herself for being caught and mad at the captains words, she wasn't a whore or just some useless object taking up space and air.
PostPosted: Mon Apr 04, 2011 6:59 pm

The captain rubbed his beard as he took in Liliac's words. "A test eh? do you think you could hold yer own against one of my men in a fight?" He stated in that booming voice of his, and Liliac could tell that he didn't think that she could stand a chance. Liliac smirked, little did the captain know that she had been in plenty of scraps before, especially when the town had that dry season and all the looting, she was able to help defend the clinic.

"I accept your challenge... now who here will step up to fight a woman?" She said, holding her head high as she looked around at the gathering crew. Finally one stepped forth who was a dirty looking man with a greasy red jacket and dark stained and torn jeans. "Alright then, are you ready sir?" She asked as she took off her parka, wanting some more moving ability even though when the wind brushed over the ship causing the sails to shake and snap she had to resist shivering. The men started to cheer as the two circled each other, trying to gauge each other's strength and movement. The captain looked amused that Liliac was actually going through it. The man in front of her threw the first punch, lunging at her with the speed and agility of a man who was long used to the rolling movements of the sea and ship.

Liliac tried to side step but her ankle turned as the ship rolled again and she felt the hit land on her shoulder as she tried to catch herself and duck under the man's arm. As she passed under she took a cheap shot and aimed a hit at his side, managing to hit him, but not with as much energy as she hoped since he was so close to her she had little room for a wind up. Her eyes flashed, and to those watching they looked almost 'animal like' as she darted again to the other side of him. "Is that it?" she stated not wanting to show how much the blow actually hurt. The man chuckled and cracked his knuckles as if to show that he wasn't going to 'play nice anymore'.

Liliac rushed at him and had her fists raised as if she was about to punch him but at the last minute she used the roll o f the ship to be able to duck down and take a kick at the man's legs from a crouched position. For her movement she received a smack in the face as she made connection with the man's knees causing him to loose balance slightly. She took that moment to stand up and wipe her nose, already feeling a trickle of blood starting.

The fight continued as such for several more minutes before the captain raised his hands. "Enough. I don't need two people working for me injured enough so that they can't work" Liliac paused, her sides heaving as she tried to breath sweat dripping off her face. "What? Does that mean you accept me at least until we reach the Isle?" The man nodded and Liliac slumped to the deck as the crew turned grumbling away from them. "thank you" she said as she closed her eyes trying to steady her heartbeat.

'Don't think this is gonna be some picnic" The captain stated as he came to stand over her. "You've got kitchen duty first, scrub all them pots and then get working on that floor, and keep doing all the floors till I'm happy." He chuckled and walked away from her. After several minutes of rest Liliac got up then trumped to go off and find where the kitchen was on the ship. Her face was still scratched up and a dried crust of blood was under her nose and under her split lip. She knew she had bruises all over, but so did the man she fought, so she thought she made it out pretty ok, especially if she could get free food for the rest of the trip.

Ah, so you made it aboard and without a scratch?
Yeur lucky. Not many do achieve such a thing.
Now here comes the next part of the quest that you are on.
Read carefully, this letter will burn itself once being finished read.

Upon the isle of ice you will arrive, a hazardous two weeks' journey into the unknown.
You will face what you don't acknowledged in your daily life.
It is a test of strength and of courage, to see if you make it far as the deities want you to.

If you don't, your body wears down from the increasing power and you die.
Simple as that.
Now that just gave you motivation to keep on, eh? Good!

This ship does not stop at the Ice Oasis for they are scared.
You will have to jump ship in one of their boats when they are slumbering in their toasty beds.
When you reach the shore, you must search for a stone relic that beckons you with a diamond on its' forehead.
Only then have you found your destination point into the snowy wilderness.

Go into the wilderness and travel days and nights to St. Reynak....
An abandoned village that is your first pit stop before continuing on your way.
St. Reynak is a 4-day journey on foot so best be on alert...
for ghosts are watching you
and for that is a fact.
PostPosted: Thu Apr 07, 2011 2:02 pm

Liliac found another note, this one even weirder than the last. It was going to burn by the time she read it, totally "spy like". She rolled her eyes thinking it was a little over the top but still she read the note slowly trying to commit the words to memory. Two weeks on this ship? Then more walking in the wilderness.. possibly up to a week? She had to find that jewel, then travel at least 4 days on foot. Liliac dropped the letter because already the edges were starting to burn. She watched as it curled up and turned while burning, still able to read the line "for ghosts are watching you" through the red flare of the paper.

Liliac sighed, she had made it this far and now.. possibly death awaited her? And what with these Ghosts.. She hoped that they would be helpful and not the hellish kind. Liliac heard someone approaching so she turned back to the work she was set to in the kitchen, peeling potatoes then helping make dinner for the crew. Of course, after she battles some gross man that she's most seen as being helpful in a kitchen.. typical sexism - put the women in the kitchen where she stays out of trouble and only makes food and cleans.

When she had gone into the hold to get the potatoes she was able to get Silver to follow her, and now the owl was happily up in the rafters of the small cramped kitchen space, enjoying the warmth from the stoves as food cooked, sleeping. Liliac tossed her owls an angry glance, "Well at least you get to rest it up, I'm sweating down here working a way just so we weren't thrown overboard.."

It had been a couple of days already, and Liliac was already more comfortable with the crew, it probably helped that she had started to smell like one. Despite the chilly weather, she had down graded from her heavy jacket and multiple layers, to her second set of clothing, with just a warm long sleeve shirt and a pair of jeans. She only put her jacket on when she had to go to the upper deck, which wasn't very often, and more so to throw overboard the peelings from potatoes and other scraps.

She had been spending most of her time cleaning and organizing the inside of the ship, her main duties keeping her in the kitchen. She was no longer angry about being put in the 'woman's position' and took to it easily needing not much thought process to complete most tasks. Even Silver seemed to be enjoying the routine of things, some of the crew even liked to bring her little smidgins of food here or there, and Silver kept her own keep by routinely going to stay down in the hold capturing some of the mice down there. She rarely ate them, but preferred to bring them to Liliac in the kitchen and drop them at her feet much like a cat would and give her a stare as if to say, quite proudly, 'gotcha a gift!'.

The seas had gotten much rougher lately, and though Liliac enjoyed no longer hiding in the hold, she still remembered the letter of how she would have to sneak off again and steal one of their small side boats. While none of the men were necessarily pleasant to Liliac, she didn't think they deserved a stowaway that stole one of their life boats later. She was lucky that they let her eat some of the food they had on the ship, and had even given her own "quarters" which was really a hammock strung up from the beams in the kitchen, but at least she had her privacy and didn't have to sleep where all the smelly men slept.
