Lionette yawned, watching her small brood from under the shade of a tree. They weren't actually hers of course. How could they be? But they called the yellow moat "Mama" and that was all that mattered. The trio frolicked and played together, 'Gus - the oldest - leading the other two in a mad dash around the field they had stopped in. The sun was shining strongly and they were a fair distance from Groat territory. If it weren't for her "adopted" little ones she would be happy to fall asleep here.
Lionette gave a small start. She had only had the oldest one on her hands for just over a month, and the twins for two weeks. She had still intended to find thier parents but they were growing up very quickly and not a one of them could remember anything about thier mother or father. It wasn't until now she realized she had started to think of them as her own.
Looking on at the three she could only assume there was one parent shared between them. The greens and greys and patterns were all just too similar for a coincidence. But the littlest were found seperate from Gus. He was growing alarmingly fast compared to the other two. Was there some mother around who was just having children and then abandoning them? Or was there a ladies-moat having children with women and then leaving the children out in the cold when the mamas couldn't do thier part? Lionette had no idea... And she wasn't sure anymore that she wanted to find out.
Still, she almost wished she could find the parent. While she loved these children, she had no herd to speak of, and had never wanted one. And as she was always scolded when told she wanted to go out traveling, the road was no place for children. And while the three were happy and followed her wherever thier hooves would take them she couldn't help but wonder if they would be better off somewhere else.

Coleo guides his small family over to a new grazing grass. Zoker and Brillen chase each other, tackling, falling behind, and chase each other again to catch up.

Coleo comes to a stop just where the field starts. "We're here," he says to the rough housing youngsters. "Eat up and you can play around all afternoon if you want."

The three graze, Coleo quietly munching the tall crisp grass, while the other two goof off between nibbles. Zoker starts to cough on the grass after a tackle, but swallows.

"Chew your food, kid," Coleo says through a full mouth.

"Dad," Brillen says, his ears perked and his attention at another corner of the field. He turns back excitedly. "I think I see other moats!!!"

Coleo stands up quickly. "Where?" He hadn't met many other moats in his wanderings. His corner of the island was a rather lonely one. Too lonely for a social moat like him. He loved the young ones that had come into his care recently, but he also longed for companionship of older moats. There was only so much "chase your tail" and "tackle" an adult like him could play. Besides, he could use a feminine perspective on raising the kids.

"Are there lllladies," Coleo asks in a cheesy way.

"Daaad!" Brillen snorts, embarrassed by the question. "Don't be weird around them!"

Gus was the first to notice the trio. The green moat gave a small squwak and ran to Lionette withe the other two in tow. Lionette stared at them strangely. Why on earth were they so scared? Then she saw the trio of Moats heading her way and it dawned on her. They had probably never seen another moat before aside from herself. And the big black male that was approaching was probably very intimidating to the three smaller ones. Lionette eyed the new people and stepped out from the shade of the tree with her three children following closely behind. She stood boldly in the sun, the light shimmering on her golden fur and making her white highlights glow.
Lionette smiled as the other moats approached. She never much cared for other moats... Only children. But he had little ones with him too. She smiled at the male moat and glanced back at her three children with the same smile. She hoped they would see there was no real threat here. Her eyes returned to the other three. "Hello there." she said simply.

Brillen scampers up to the other small moats and the juvenile, eager for new playmates. "Hi," he squeaks brightly. "I'm Brillen! The my sister over there is Zoker... and the big moat is my dad... well sorta. His name is long, so I just call him dad."

Zoker hangs back, hiding in Coleo's wide shadow. But her shyness does not completely conquer her curiosity. She peers around Coleo's leg, her eyes large with fascination.

Coleo trots up, first focusing his attention on the shy kids Brillen approaches, but then his attention is pulled by the moatess stepping out from the shade of the tree. Zoker says what he’s thinking. “Pwetty,” she squeaks.

Coleo shakes his head, breaking out of the mystification meeting new moats had on him. “Hi there,” he tries to say boldly. “We’re new to this area. These two are Brillen and Zoker. My name is Coleoptera. Buuut that’s a mouthful. The kids call me dad. You can call me Coleo for short.”

Gus stepped forward at Brillen and frowned intently at him. ".....Hello." He said cautiously. "I am Gus and these are Flame and Andii."
Lionette eyed Coleo suspiciouly for a moment but seeing Gus frowning and the other two cowering she decided she should try to set a better example for the children. She smiled warmly. "My name is Lionette. And these are my children. Flamey and Asparagus are the boys and Andii is the girl." She lowered her head to Zoker and smiled. "You're very pretty yourself. Why don't you try to drag my children here out to play. They could use some time with other kids." With that she shoved her children firmly out from behind her with her hind legs chasing them off to frolick in the field.
She watched them run nervously out into the field before turning to Coleo again. "We're actually not from around here either... We just visit this spot a lot." She shrugged slightly. "We come and go."

Zoker perks up and scoots shyly out from behind Coleo, enticed by the warm welcome from Lionette. She looks up at Coleo anxiously. "Is it okay," she whispers.

"Absolutely," Coleo says brightly, giving her an encouraging nudge with his nose. "Just stick close to your brother. Go on!"

Coleo watches as Zoker happily darts off, following Brillen and the other kids into the tall grass of the field. He turns back to Lionette for conversation, sitting himself down in the shade of the tree. "We live in a small grove on the edge of the grasslands. It's been getting warmer, so I thought a grassy walk would be nice. Soon it'll be warm enough to visit the beach, though. I think the kids would have a lot of fun splashing around down there."

Lionette smiled softly while watching the children scamper about, but then frowned. "It is getting warm out. That means the Groats will start showing up at night more." She sighed and turned to the other Moat, giving Coleo an appologetic smile.
"I am sorry. I am a bit of a pessimist. My kids have never seen a beach before.... Perhaps we could tag along? I am sure they would enjoy it. At the very least we would be safer together."
