So yeah, she asked me today if I could change my major, because she doesn't think I'd be able to get a job with that major. I understand her concerns, but my reason for choosing (East) Asian Studies is not only because I'm interested in studying Asian languages and literature, but also because I wouldn't have to deal with math and science all the time. I originally planned on majoring in Biology so I could become a vet, but I eventually became discouraged because while I loved animals and wanted to help them, I royally suck at math and science, and I decided I didn't want to go into a major where I hated the core subjects. After all, why go into a major you're not going to enjoy?
Has anyone here had parents who weren't supportive of their college majors?

My parents are supportive of my choice of Japanese / Asian Studies / something along that line, but they're not supportive of how I admit that there's a possibility that I'll change my major.
Well, you can get jobs with an Asian Studies major, it's just that they're typically low paying, so I can see where your parents might be coming from. But you gotta do what you like to do.
Anyways, it's better than majoring in philosophy or something like that where there are literally no jobs besides teaching xd

My mom is pretty supportive of me majoring in Linguistics, although she doesn't keep it to herself that she wants me to major in political science. She'll ask me all the time if I'm considering changing it, but beyond that she doesn't try to pressure me. If she knew my political beliefs I bet she would stop xp
I've always liked the idea of having a job that I would do even if I weren't being payed for it, and given the choice to do whatever I want, I'd probably sit around all day analysing languages. When I look at it from that perspective, I quit caring about the pay. It seems better to just directly go to doing what I want to do with my life, than spending all my time making money so that I can retire later and then have the money to do what I want to do.

I tend to ignore my family's input on my major. One day they'll say, "Isn't the LHC cool? You should be a physicist." The next day, "With the new health care plan the medical field will be opening up. You should go to med school." And then, "Engineers sound like they have really fun jobs. You should be an engineer." And, "An MD-PhD program sounds awful. You should do it." And, "We need more psychiatrists and psychotherapists that work for the state and social services because there are so many people with mental disabilities that don't get adequate care. You should do that." They need to stop listening to NPR. stare

I'm majoring in International Studies (Language and Cultures) and minoring in English. I think my mother's just happy that I'm going to university ;;; She's just opposing me wanting to leave this country (canada) for good.
