Depends on the story.
Is it one with a large backstory that needs to be explained right off the bat, as in an alternate timeline story? If so, the give some history.

Not really much of a large background story, just little things that need to be explained. But that can be done throughout the story.

Definitely do not start with once upon a time, or "It was a dark and stormy
night". No, no introductions to your stories like that. Do not randomly, out of
nowhere explain your story. Explain it as you go. When you start a story it
can simply just be one of your characters saying something. Then you talk
about your main character, the main plot, blah blah blah all of that stuff.
