i say u confront him. it really depends on the kind of person he is. is he part of the popular crowd, does he hang out with people who would mess with a person like that? then if i were u i would believe them when the said he doesn't like u coz then it seems hes just doing it to mess with ur head. but if hes not then just go up to him and ask whats going on
Him being in a certain group or hanging with people like that doesn't automatically mean those are his intentions. Anyone can mess with someone without caring how they feel, even those who are supposed to be nice.
@ Op: Based on what you said about your friends it is either that he likes you and asked them not to tell or he doesn't and they don't want to hurt your feelings.
I would just go up to him and ask him if there is any chance that he would want to date you, don't rely on others to do it for you. If he really does like you then I am sure he would love to hear how you feel coming from you, not your messengers.
If he does, congratulations. If not, better luck next time.
