It was another usual working day here at Cirque du Gothique... The ever-present morning mist hung drowsily in the air, inviting all freaks and familiars to exit their sleepy dorm tents, and begin the working day. A cold dawn breeze lapped the red and gold flags of the center and surrounding tents. Fairy floss machines whirred and screeched into action, stray dogs who roamed the grounds for dropped goodies were ushered back into the woods, all in preperation for the new day.
All was unsusually usual; as usual.
Except, Today was the start of the Performing New Year. Year of the rabbit, it was, and hopefully the months ahead would be as spry and energetic as the animal the year was devoted too.
But not even the most well trained fortune teller could predict what was to befall them in the upcoming year

Somewhere in the distance the sounds of a different kind were heard.
Laughter, whoops and the wheeling of carts through mud came louder from the neighbouring forest. The dawn mist broke with a first pair of black horses, each lavishly clothed and feathered with cresent-moon caps. Carrying, they brought numerous glossy circus carrages, each one lit from the inside, some with peeking, curious eyes from the inside, some with non-chalant and concentraded faces.
Grim, indeed was the prsesnce of this party as it bumped and rattled its way down the hill. Only to be stopped by a voice which commanded attention. A thick, gold-trimmed door of the first carrage slowly opened. A heeled boot sank into the mud, the woman spoke. With her very words, the air around her filled with activity, strange people sprung from the carrages, from the suitcases, from the trees!
Pools, guys and beams were thrust into the mud, a flutter of muddy footwork erected tarps and flags, stands and steeples, quarters and rings. Before long this dank little area oppossite the gold, onyx and red glow of Cirque du Gothique would rival, if not surpass the original circus.
It was a power in it's own right, it was a long lost secret, it was Cirque du Noire!

A single, bright spotlight from above switched on, illuminating a single circumference on the platform below. Standing on the platform was a small woman, dark haired and scarlet eyed, who stood with her hands outstretched to the cheering audience. A large grin was spread across her face, and it almost seemed to curve up unnaturally. She had a small earpiece looped over one of her long, black pointed ears with a small microphone that hovered close to her mouth. She scanned the audience, taking in the faces she could manage to see with the lack of light. They all seemed so excited, eager to see what was in store for them. If only they knew better.
The platform’s mechanics began to turn, lifting the woman higher into the air so that she stood above the audience. The platform was small, anyone with acrophobia would be in the middle of of a panic attack, though the woman stood there as if she were standing on solid ground. She had a thick air of confidence around her, and when she spoke that same confidence projected in her voice. “Ladies and gentlemen!~ Allow me to introduce myself!~ I am Mademoiselle Silencieux, and I would like to extend a warm greeting to you all on behalf of the Cirque du Noire!~” She paused, waiting for the audience’s applause to die back down.
Slowly, around the platform more lights began to turn on, dimly revealing the rest of the performance floor. Already there were performers placed all along the area, though they remained frozen in the half light. “Tonight we bring you a show unlike that of which you will ever see again!~” She began to speak again, the spotlight that was focused on her switching to that of a red color. Her expression switched to that of a more serious one, and she swept her arm across infront of her slowly, gesturing to the audience. “Tonight we will venture into the depths of the mind. Exploring its every corner. Its passion,” Silencieux hugged herself for a short moment, “Its hatred, its hopes, its dreams…but most importantly, its nightmares.”
With that cue word, another set of spotlights flashed to life, revealing in the ring below a group of beasts. They ranged from the furred to the scaled to the feathered, many of them the size of two large men, though all of them only being restrained by thick leather collars. However, despite these weak attempts to control them, they only appeared to be vicious. Many of them looked around the audience, as if studying them from their spots down on the floor. Silencieux gave another twisted grin, hearing a few fearful gasps in the audience. She held up a hand, as if to quell the audience members. “But do not judge the poor creatures, for how are they any different from our own souls?” She dropped her hand, gesturing to one of the creatures below her.
As if on command, the bear like creature rose up onto its hind legs, emitting an ear splitting roar, causing a number of audience members to shrink back in their seats. “They share our hatred.” Her other hand gestured to another creature, who seemed to be shying away from the audience, letting out a pathetic, but distorted screech. “And our fears.” Silencieux brought her hands back to her chest, balling them into fists. “And we share their beastly nature. Our lust, our greed, our very want for survival!”
The lights throughout the circus tent went out, leaving the area completely black. The single spotlight above Silencieux returned, though not as brightly as before, leaving dramatic shadows along the woman. “We at the Cirque du Noire invite you to search deep within yourself, and discover the beat within you.” She slipped something small and round from out of the cuff on her wrist. With a quick flip of her wrist she snapped it open, smoke bellowing out around her, concealing her. “So without further adieu, why don’t we begin?~” The lights once again began to rise amongst the performers on the floor, illuminating them so that could begin their act. Upon observation of the lowering platform one could see that Silencieux was no longer standing there, and was nowhere in sight.
