Has anyone ever read this awesome book trilogy (Northern Lights/The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, The Amber Spyglass)? Ignore the movie, it was total utter s**t!
It's pretty much an atheist's response to The Chronicles of Narnia (In fact, the author has said that that was his inspiration). But it's more than that, as the story, characters, and world/setting are really interesting and awesome.
I thought this guild would be a good place to discuss it, seeing as atheism is a big theme in the books (especially the last one). biggrin

I read the first book my freshman year in high school, and absolutely loved it. I've been meaning to finish the series (own all the books and everything), just haven't had time to really study them!

I read them in middle school, and I can barely remember anything that happened...
But I do remember loving those books, so maybe I should reread them. I also remember my Catholic friend telling me that they were evil neutral

I read them in elementary school so I didn't really get the context very well, so.

I read the books and LOVED them. I didn't actually realize it was a war on religion until halfway through the second book. By that time, I didn't care. I was already on my way through agnosticism and on to atheism, so it wasn't like I was repulsed or anything.
The funny thing was that I went to a catholic school, and everyone thought the book (and then the movie) were so evil because it was anti-christian. I just gave them a constant look that said, "screw you and your christianity-obsessiveness and appreciate wonderful literature".
I agree about the movie. It sucked, but I still like watching it. The only thing I like was Ian McKellan's voice for Iorek Byrnison. And then Nicole Kidman is really pretty, so that made it okay. I was pissed about the ending, but I understood why they couldn't cliff-hang it like the books. They didn't want to have to commit to a second movie if the first one tanked, which it did.

Haha, I agree that the movie had its good parts! I loved most (possibly all?) of the actors they chose for the main characters (except I always pictured Asriel with salt-and-pepper hair, and rocking a classy goatee). They did a great job, and the effects were really good too. But the HORRIBLE ******** SHITTY BEYOND BELIEF writing just totally ruined it for me. burning_eyes A weird thing is, when I read the books for the first time I was still Christian. (I was only 11 or 12 years old. sweatdrop ) So I didn't understand a lot of the third book, and I barely picked up on the atheist overtones in it, but when I read it again at like 14 or 15 (still Christian) I was like "I don't agree with the religious commentary, but I still love this book." Read it again a couple years later after ditching Christianity and loved them even more. =D

I liked all three of the books especially the last one. When is Philip Pullman going to release the Book of Dust? I read that he started working on it 2004 and it was going to be in two parts because it was such a big book. I am looking forward to it. razz Here is the link this website says a lot about Philip Pullman.
