Picking Strawberries
*Chris stood in front of a bunch of baskets he had lined up and tapped his chin while he decided uponn the best one to use. Examining one each right after the other his eyebrows furroed in his deep thought. Finally he chose a medium size tightly woven one made of a sturdy rattan. He put a thin hand towel inside it so the berries he collected wouldnt bruise. Imperfect berries shouldnt be eaten or even cooked with but if he ran across any he would be mindful in avoiding them.
Taking the basket he made a late start toward the strawberry field knowing that most everyone had probably already arrived before himself. That fact irritated him but he put on his "Game face" and wore a good natured smile while he waved a general hello to anyone who happened to notice him. He knelt down by one of the rows of leafy strawberry plants and searched for a berry worthy to put into his basket. By the ninth plant or so he found one reasonably plump and picked the strawberry. Placing it gently into his basket. It looked so small and would need plenty of friends. He'd have to get a move on just to catch up.
Chris had been continuing to put strawberries here and there into his sturdy rattan basket. He was glad that he had placed a small towel in there to prevent the strawberries from being damaged. After examining every single strawberry in the row he was in he meticulously picked five of them, Considered six others and continued looking for the best ones he could find. He found one that was so heart shaped he could not help but eat it right then and there. He savored the hint of tart in its sweetness and smiled happily. Going over to another row of the strawberry plants he went through the same process he had with the first.
Upon checking the fourth plant in he noticed an unusual ladybug. It had a black shell with red dots on it. He paused in his search to admire the bug for a few moments. If is werent for ladybugs these strawberry plants would be swarming with aphids. He thought he remembered that aphids loved to eat plants and destroy the leaves and whatnot. He wasnt sure if he had that correct however it was an unusual ladybug. While he was musing on this he kept on searching for more of the most perfect strawberries he could find. If these were going on a cake he couldnt see himself wanting a cake with mushy or discolored fruit on it. He would still have some but it would not be nearly as appetizing.
Chris looked in surprised as an unknown person dumped strawberries into his basket. He did not know how many however all he saw were his perfect strawberries being mixed in with ones that he had not had a chance to check. He smiled and thanked Erin as he did not want to appear ungrateful.*
wow, that helps me out a lot. Thank you!
He Picked three more strawberries now not paying as much attention to if they were perfect or not. after all it didn't exactly matter now did it? Chris had just picked another strawberry when he spotted a flying person diving in his direction. He paled, dropped his basket and backed up quite a bit. Then he seemed to change his mind and went forward to try and help, after all he wasnt about to embarass himself.*
Please be careful!!
*Chris said as he tried to break this persons fall. So much for his beautiful pinstripes being unblemished, however he did not think it a good idea to just let this person fall while he stood around and did nothing. He had a basket as well, maybe Chris could help him out with some berries. It was the least he could do as someone seemed to have gotten a later start than himself*

Cont
"Absolutely! I can pick faster than I can eat, and I don't have a basket... so a bit of team work may be in order!" Erin beamed as he leaned down and pulled two perfectly ripe berries off of the plant at his feet and deposited one in each of Chris and Laurie's baskets.
As he moved on to the next plant, he continued the conversation, "I'm not too fond of cakes, but the idea of fresh strawberry jam sounds marvelous!"
*Inside she knew that they were trying to make her feel at home- and she really did enjoy knowing that. She had always been a bit too kind at times, and because of it she had lost many people- getting close and then getting pushed away. Shy at first she would slowly open up. With a soft grin she laughed and jumped past the two; her arms moving out past her sides as she ran, skipping slightly. Her tail batted from side to side as she laughed; the air against her skin felt warm and soothing.
A game it seemed this could be- with a sly smile the fox wiggled herself out of her free for all jump and dashed off into the patch; moving quickly to find berries. Her eyes narrowed as she pulled herself to the ground, crawling now- Her tail propped up as she sat and started to pick [] berries off of a lower spot, giggling as she did so. She had picked about seven, before moving back up; her grin wide.*
*Chris found it a bit of a challenge to keep up with her however he did the best he could. He still managed to be mindful of the types of berries he picked. As Laurie had told him, If a berry were too hard it would be too sour and nothing could be done with it.*
Strawberry jam would be great with the tea's I make. I have some herbs in the backyard. I found out pretty recently they make great tea when dried. Some of them are mint plants too, amazingly fragrant in the morning combined with the lavender.
*Here he stopped and smiled a bit sheepishly while he continued to Pick strawberries. He put four others into his rattan basket and continued in his efforts of keeping up with Laurie. He had never seen someone that fast before. It was a new experience for him.*
*With a passing sigh the fox would twist herself around Chris, before dashing off into the other direction. What fun- she was enjoying herself. So much energy had been bundled up within her- it was about time she let it out. Without any care of what they thought of her at the time she moved herself into her light tort again, her tail swaying about happily.
Her eyes would close as she smiled and took in a breath of air, before boosting on about what a fun time she was having. As if speaking to herself she wondered off alone, her form becoming harder to see as she sunk out of view; moving aimlessly around the field.*
*Chris had been continuing to gather strawberries when he felt a presence behind him and then a tug on his basket. He looked back with a quizzical look on his features to see a sheep. A real live wool covered creature who was right now nibbling on HIS STRAWBERRIES!!. He lifted his basket higher much to the chaigrin of the offending creature. It baa'ed mournfully and then proceeded to try and stand on its hind legs to reach the basket.*
Hey! you lousy little thief, these are MY strawberries so. . .go away! SHOO!
*He tried to shoo the creature away and walked a few rows away to get rid of the annoying thing. The only thing it accomplished was that it started to follow him. Chris continued to try and shoo it away to no avail. He quickly dropped three more strawberries that he picked into his basket and again had to hold it up for fear of losing any other berries.*
Shouldn't you be at a farm or something? who do you belong to anyway?
*He spoke as if the sheep could give him any answers. It looked it him with vacant looking sheep eyes as it voiced its disapproval of the basket being so high. He was beginning to be very annoyed at this sheep coming out of nowhere and for some reason, following him.
Chris threw a strawberry down the row and watched as the sheep followed it. He made good his escape and took refuge behind a sign a few yards down. The sheep ate the berry and seemed to look around for him but did not see him peeking out. eventually the annoying creature wandered off to wherever he had come from.
Relieved, he sat down with his back to the sign and looked up. It was such a warm day and the clouds reminded him of crossiants and dumplings he fried at the bakery. He nibbled on another strawberry and for the moment, watched everyone else. Could he really complete this recipe? it seemed a large undertaking however since when had he let that stop him before?
Just then Chris heard a familiar scream and jerked his head from his cloud watching. Scrambling up quickly he looked around and his suspicions were comfirmed. Valerie was here and something had startled her. He grabbed his basket and went to her.*
Valerie? are you ok? I hear you scream and got worried.
*His face displayed a concerned expression as he helped her get back up. Noticing her basket was empty he placed exactly half of what he had into hers knowing it would help her out greatly. Besides, he was sure he could get the ones he had collected up to a reasonable number. *
I can help you pick strawberrys if you want?
*Not really waiting for her response he stooped down and picked a few, purposely ignoring the one with the worm on it. He picked five heart shaped ones for her and put them in her basket. It took him a while to find perfect ones but as they were so much alike he knew she wouldnt have really wanted ones that werent perfect.*
I hope that helps, Valerie.
Valerie nodded, accepting the help. She beamed, overjoyed at the strawberries now in her basket and the help of a frend. "Th-thank you! It helps a lot." Still delighted, Valerie looked from her basket, to Chris, and back down to the basket. "Will you be here long? B-because I would like the help." She kept her eyes fixed at the basket.
I'm here for a while, yes.
*He replied while helping her pick more berries and taking special care not to pick ones with holes or that were oddly shaped. He nibbled on one that wasnt quite right for either of their baskets and enjoyed the sweetness that lay to bursting inside. This was his best friend and it just made his day she was able to make it. It was like an ice cream sundae, if it didnt have the whipped cream on top it didn't seem so much of a sundae.
He picked two strawberries and neatly placed one in her basket and one in his. He continued this pattern for each one he deemed fit. As both of them were bakers in training it made sense the better the berry looked the better the cake or tart as a whole looked. When you compared a tart with a mishapen berry atop it to one with a plump heart shaped one it was reasonable to expect a customer to prefer eating the one with the heart shaped or spherical berry.*
I was wondering, um. . .if its not to early to ask as you may have not decided yet. Were you planning something with these berries? I heard some say they wanted to make a cake and others just wanted to eat them.
Valerie bent over, inspecting a vine ripe full of strawberries. Smiling she reached out for a rather lonely strawberry, and placed it in her basket. "Actually, I wanted to try making strawberry tarts. Are you planning anything special?"
*Chris looked about to check if anyone was listening before turning his attention back onto the girl he had seemingly known forever, well it seemed that way anyway.*
I have a secret, I wanted to try making the strawberries into a drink. I found a parcial recipe in an old book I found in the attic but the paper was ripped kind of. Im going to see if I can guess what the other ingrediants are. if all else fails, I can always use them for your tarts. *He smiled, brightly.*
"Oh?" Her ears perked up as her interest was sparked. "What kind of drink?" She asked eagerly, "A smoothie? A slushie?"
Its for a strawberry wine. I figure by the time its aged properly I'll be old enough to drink it. Its a partial recipe but if I research it im sure to come up with a way to get the whole thing.
*He answered with a determined look in his eye. For now he thought of it as merely one more challenge however what he didn't realize was that it was also expanding his skills. He was going beyond what his limits were and having a whole new set of limits. Chris already had big plans for the future and the passion to see them through.*
We can share a bottle when we get rich.
*The thought that she might not be as determined was alien to him. In his opinion, everyone had the same fervent goals. In his mind he could picture it, quite clearly. They would all be living in the community together, maybe a few of them would own business's, others would marry and start a family. Still others might go off for a while possibly to be with relatives or college but in his world they'd be back, They would always come back.
Nothing would change and it would be their own community. Chris had big dreams all right but like the child he still was couldnt imagine there might be things he had no control over. Chris smiled happily and picked another four strawberries for himself. He dusted off his hands which were getting rather dusty and felt satisfaction*
I'd love to help you make those tarts, Im sure they do nicely paired with some tea I just made.
Valerie nodded, plucking another strawberry. "When we become rich.." Her voice quieted as her thoughts trailed. She hadn't thought about the future much, or being rich one day. There was a pause of silence, until the latter of what he said sunk in. "Tea? What kind of tea?" She asked as she cautiously reached down and grabbed another berry.
There is a nice collection of herbs in the backyard. When dried, they make such fragrant and delicious tea. I found this out only about a month ago and wanted to see if I could do it.
*He gave a dimpled smile and continued to help her collect strawberries. The day seemed to be drawing to a close so he was going a bit faster now. picking about two of them he placed them gently in her basket and then picked four for himself.*
Your welcome to come by anytime for tea. I can make fresh scones and you can look at the garden. Its a bit bigger than the one at the dorm but only if you have time. I know we're all busy with class and the like.
*Chris looked at the sky and saw the familiar crimson beginning of the sun starting to set. He picked up his basket and finished up the strawberry gathering. He smiled at Valerie and gestured toward the sky. It was getting closer to the evening and some tea might be in order. It would ward off the usual nights chill.*
We should finish up, nightfall will come soon. Your welcome to come over for some tea. That is if you dont have homework waiting for you. Then we can do it another time. I think we both have a good amount of strawberries, considering your late start. Glad I was able to help you with that.
*Dusting off the last bit of earth from picking so many he turned and started the walk to the house he was watching for a relative. He hummed a light tune under his breath and thought about what he wanted to make for supper.*

Plushie Event
*Chris had glanced at a flyer he brought home from school. It contained information about a workshop for students if they were interested. He had never sewn anything before and it did seem a bit more for someone experienced with that sort of thing. Still though it was something to do and as he had already finished his current assignments maybe he should go and at least check it out. He ate a bit of food and then changed into fresh clothing. It was the exact same as what he had worn to the strawberry festival, he had several of the same outfit.
Pinstripes were always classic and why mess with a classic? It fit in any situation be it formal or informal and besides, he looked very handsome in it. He brushed his teeth and walked to the stop where the cablecar usually took him to school. When it arrived he paid the man and sat down on a free wooden bench. The varnish looked like it had been worn down by thousands of butts sitting on it but despite its lack of shine, gave the car more character. He smiled shyly back at the pretty girl who was checking him out and exited quietly when the right stop came round.
He examined the pamplet again for which room and made his way there. Room 100 shouldnt be too hard to find he thought until he looked at the wall directory. It was a confusing mess of hallways and turns but somehow he would find the place. Taking a pencil he drew out a rough map for himself using the directory as a guide and followed it. It took a few minutes. . . .well twenty minutes actually but he finally found the right door and entered the room. Upon entering he saw a familiar person, Erin. Chris smiled and took a table then greeted him warmly.
He saw so many colors and patterns to choose from. Maybe he should be thinking about what kind of plushie he wanted to make. Should it be an animal? or a person, or an object? Maybe if he looked closer at the fabrics and textures he could use that for inspiration. Being very neat about it he started going through the fabric piece by piece hoping maybe one would inspire him into making something. This wasnt easy like it was baking, at least he knew what he was doing when he cooked.*
"Good morning Chris!" Erin greeted him cheerfully with his usual warm smile. He took the three pieces of fabric he had chosen, one light blue, one a medium blue and one a dark blue, and sat down across from Chris. "Did you have fun yesterday with your little sheep friend?" Erin grinned as he pulled out his little sketchbook and began to flip through the pages, opening to the humorous scene he had sketched and turning it towards Chris.
Good Morning!
*Chris turned red at the mention of the sheep and on seeing the picture his jaw dropped. Green sparks flew from his eyes as he got a bit defensive.*
That sheep tried to attack me!! that sheep was evil and wanted to steal my strawberries. It was horrible, I dont think I'll be the same.
*He replied, making it sound worse than it was and being overly dramatic besides. The truth was it mainly annoyed him but he wanted to milk for sympathy a bit.*
Erin put the picture away, "Hey, hey, it was funny, you have to admit!" Erin chuckled lightly. "You'll look back on it one day and laugh, you know! But I think you're right... that sheep might have been evil... you better be careful, it might come after you in your sleep!" Erin added with a sly grin.
*Chris paled a bit when he said that. but then he remembered Sheep can't open locked doors. He relaxed a bit and even laughed* You almost had me going there. *As he continued looking through the fabrics. He saw some sturdy damask in a variety of colors but what kind of plushie couuld you make from damask fabric?*
"There you go, you're better when you lighten up a bit." Erin spread the fabrics he had picked out in front of him, examining them back and front, trying to figure out how one would turn these two dimensional fabric pieces into a three dimensional critter. "What are you going to make, Chris?" he asked, "I'm going to make a dragon... I think. That is... if I can figure out how."
I er, actually I havent decided yet. Maybe Ill make a puppy or something, maybe one of us. * he teased not really knowing yet what he wanted to make.* Im terrible at sewing, never learned how. Get me in the kitchen and I know what I'm doing. *He smiled.*
"You should definitely make a sheep plushie," Erin chuckled as he pulled out a piece of faux wool from the pile and waved it at him, "baa baa! I'm gonna get youuu~!" he teased. "Though a puppy would be nice, too." Erin slumped and rested his head on his left hand, staring at the fabric in front of him. "This is kinda overwhelming," he sighed, "I wish some cute girl would come teach us how to sew." He stared at the door for a moment as if he could will someone to walk through it.
"Oi! Laurie!" Erin called excitedly as he suddenly noticed her sitting on the other side of the room from him. He didn't see her come in, but she seemed like she was concentrating hard on the sewing in front of her already, and hadn't heard him. "Chris, look! Laurie's here!" He tugged on Chris' sleeve to get his attention and got up and went to sit next to her and watch what she was doing for a moment before inquiring again, "Laurie! Good morning! Can you teach me how to do this?" he said quickly, looking up at her with pleading puppy dog eyes.
*Chris looked up in confusion as Erin tugged on his sleeve. Then he heard Laurie was here and saw her. Eric was right, there was a chance she would know how to sew or at least put one of these things together. If not there was that guy who seemed to be helping Valerie. He seemed to know what he was doing. He stopped looking at the fabric and went with Erin to greet Laurie. He smiled at her and hoped she had as much fun as he did at the strawberry field. Chris did have fun, aside from the demon sheep trying to attack him of course.*
Its good to see you again. Um, You wouldnt happen to know how to sew would you? We seem to be having a hard time with it.
*He said, looking a bit humbled. He hoped she would be able to help as it kind of was silly to even be here if not only couldnt he decide what he would make but he couldnt even make so much as a pillow much less a plushie of . . .something. Glancing in Valerie's direction he was glad that old guy was taking time to help her. Chris liked old people, they had interesting stories to tell and knew a lot about almost everything.*
