Particularly useful for those of you that did Nano.

This is a thread is all about bribing yourself to write. It could be that you choose to punish your failure to achieve targets, or you might choose to reward - whatever works for you.

In the process, I hope 'we' learn to make writing a habit. A part of our daily lives where possible. I hope this thread helps - any feedback is welcome.

Forfeits

If you don't achieve your word count, you need to do something hideous! Obviously you have to choose something you don't like doing...

Drink a shot of vinegar
Rub salt into (an existing) paper cut
Wear something embarrassing in public
Paint your eyelids different colours, then go out in public
Eat a spoonful of Marmite/Vegimite
Put salt into your tea/coffee/juice and drink it
Drink a shot of undiluted cordial
Listen to music you really don't like
Watch something on You Tube that turns your stomach
Stand in the rain in shorts and t-shirt
Take a cold shower
Do exercise
Eat veg you don't like

Incentives

A reward system for achieving word goals.

A piece of chocolate for 'x' amount of words
Your favourite tv program
Time on the internet/facebook/game
Go for a meal
A night out
A luxury hot chocolate with all the trimmings
A bubble bath
A page of a book you're reading for pleasure
Something social
Bake a cake/brownies/cookies
Allow yourself to make a drink after 'x' amount of words
Monetary incentive
Shopping
Listening to music you enjoy
Extra time in bed/lie in

Tips

Most importantly, you need to manage your time in order to achieve your goals. Set time aside, make a rota or allocate yourself hours of the day where you can work on what you need to.

Once you start to make it a habit, it becomes easier to write regularly.

(Any suggestions/tips on writing regularly/achieving word counts welcome).

If it's a big goal it might be good to have larger incentives and punishments.

I want to have the first book of my series written and finished by January 1, 2012.
If I met that goal I get an e-reader, if I don't I have to donate my hair to Locks of Love. sad

And if you can't make time tow rite, you can always FIND time to write.
I've had to revert to composition books because I only write while waiting for the bus and between/during classes. 3nodding

Big incentives are definitely more appealing, I just think the larger goals can be quite daunting for new authors. sweatdrop

Oh my! I hope you definitely reach your goal, but at least it's for a good cause. I totally agree too - you can always find time. I've heard so many people say they don't have time but they've somehow been able to keep up with a TV program, or spent hours on FB/Youtube etc
