Octopus sat waiting impatiently for his students, tentacles quirked thoughtfully as the children entered the room, watching with round eyes as they sat down, he soon lost patience with their dawdling. "Sit down, ignorant younglings, you are here to learn, so don't act like a flock of unruly goslings. Sit!"
As class begins, he indicates for everyone to turn to open their textbooks. "Now. I want each of you to fetch a partner, and spend the class period talking between yourselves, and together, pick a piece of art that you particularly appreciate. Write down why, preferably in paragraph form, and hand in your explanation by the end of class period." And with that, he leaned forward over his desk, and waited for his pupils to comply. It was perhaps an abrupt introduction, but tact had never been this professor's best subject.

Widow by no means considered herself a teacher's pet. She wasn't after the teacher's approval, nor did she mind what the other students thought. That aside, however, she was sitting up straight with all her books, notes and pens organised neatly and evenly in front of her. She had already begun flicking a book of artworks, heedless of her lack of a study partner. She seemed entirely consumed with interest, despite the lack of anything even slightly entertaining in the subject matter. The small thin girl twirled her pen aimlessly in one of her four hands while lost in thought, not pausing from her perusal of the book to even attempt to find a class partner.
Mugen had taken the art class in hopes of finding a quiet, more relaxed environment to deal with arriving at C.A.M.P, still feeling out of his element. When he'd arrived, he was assaulted by a wave of noise and chaos. 'Great...' he thought to himself, a heavy smog escaping his lips as he released a heavy sigh. Scanning over the heads of his classmates, he was able to take notice of a smaller female. She was already seated, ready to work, and seemed lost in a book, also... And by far the most important aspect that drew the tall male to her, was she was quiet. Moving past the clutter of his classmates, Mugen pulled out a chair, "Is this seat taken?" he asked, not really waiting for a response before taking a seat and producing his text book, a notebook, and his pen.
Widow looked up, offering the smallest of smiles. Despite her lack of overall expression, she seemed to give off a friendly and welcoming aura. "Certainly not~" She said, more of her smile in her voice then on her face.
She didn't seem bothered in the slightest that he invited imself to sit down, merely moving her seat a little closer so that he could see her notes. "Would you like to work together? Teacher seems to prefer that students partner up. I myself am not concerned either way. Being alone is nice, but an extra opinion is very good too~" Her voice was light and almost sing-song, and even though her stiff mouth moved very little when she spoke, it was clear she was happy and difficult to frustrate.
Mugen thought for a second, looking back around once the teacher had silenced the mob of younger students. He wasn't one for facial expressions, finding that he had always been referred to as 'stoic'. Though when she spoke he couldn't help but attempt a smile, she was quiet, and seemed to just want to do work, and not mess around, considering Art wasn't a favorite subject. "I don't see why not, I doubt I'd have much luck working with anyone else," being quite blunt, though his examination of the class showed even silent many were messing around and not focused. "I don't know much about art, I just wanted a quiet place to study. I hope that doesn't bother you." His voice was almost the complete opposite to her own, very hard, somewhat deep for his young age, and his facial features seemed to nearly scream out 'these other students annoy the living hell out of me.' Deciding to just look over her shoulder, a simple task, at whatever it was she was already looking at in her textbook.
Widow happily offered her book out to the boy, who might as well have been twice her size when the two were viewed side-by side. As before, she didn't seemed to be bothered in the slightest by his gruff attitude, her kind smile unfaltering as she allowed him easier access to her notes.
"Oh, do not worry about bothering me. I would gladly offer my quiet corner to even the loudest of the others~" She said this almost fondly, as though the loud and annoying students were just cute little children who got somewhat rambunctious from time to time. She held no air of disdain as the other quiet students seeking asylum from the onslaught of sound and movement seemed to, her glassy black eyes somehow looking cheerful despite their lifelessness.
"Thanks... I think," Mugen responded, he couldn't help but feel rather cautious about her. It wasn't that she gave off any sort of hostility, in fact it was exactly because she didn't give off any feelings of any sort of aggression that put him off so much. He didn't expect everyone on earth to be an a*****e sure, but everyone had at least some sort of anger in them.
"My name is Mugen... In case you were curious." Figuring it was only polite to introduce himself to his new artistic partner. When she shared the book with him, he couldn't help but take some interest in the art she was picking. It wasn't his usual cup of tea, but the designs and depth caught his eye. "This stuff is pretty good, though, it doesn't look like stuff you'd find in a normal text book. Is this the one you got for class, or one from a personal collection?" He asked, even though he seemed withdrawn, he couldn't help but take an interest, the art keeping his attention away from the noise coming from the other tables.
Widow's smile remained unfaltering, even though the towering boy showed clear discomfort. Back home she was very much used to the large host of reactions people would have towards her, but far from resenting them or even being insulted, she seemed to take it as a compliment. She was well known in her home town for thanking those who insulted her with words like 'freak', and this only encouraged them to do so more often, and with more intensity.
"Oh, yes~" She chimed happily through her near-motionless face, "I had already read the text book they provided for this class, but I thought that something more suited to my tastes would be nice. This one-" She pointed with one of her many slender fingers, to the piece on the page he was looking at, "Is actually from the 18th century. Is it not beautiful?"
Mugen was from a similiar situation growing up. When you're a large serpentine male who towers over your fellow children... and accidently send a few to the hospital when you need to burp. Well, Mugen had his fair share of trouble growing up, which had lead him to become more withdrawn and somewhat aggressive at times.
"I... Uhm... Sure?" Mugen was far from an artistic genius, the main limit to his knowledge of art was when he'd see drawings in books, or just from things he saw while traveling; or when he read his fantasy novels; but the main level of artistic talent was on the front covers of those. "I mean, it looks beautiful, but I have no idea why... Personal preference?" He added, since the other aspect of the assignment was to write up why they picked the piece of art they had; though her love of reading was impressive; and she appeared to be quite the over achiever.
She twirled her pen skillfully in one hand, considering him quietly for a moment. It was impossible to tell what she was thinking if one did not know her, and those who were afraid of her hated that fact above all else.
"Hmm," She mused in her light voice, "Perhaps, if you do not know what to say about the technicality of the art, just allow your thoughts on how it looks to come out. Regardless of whether you think it's right or not." She gave a small jingling laugh at this, "After all, I do not know if it's possible to be wrong, when it comes to art. Just write about your preferences~" She said it as though it was the easiest thing in the world, being used to pouring out her heart and soul onto paper simply for the 'fun' of it. She couldn't comprehend for a moment why anyone wouldn't be able to do that.
Mugen nodded his head a bit, understanding the concepts, still not finding a way to express them at least. "Well... What do you like about it? Maybe that would help me get some idea on what I should write." he suggested, mainly he was just completely lost. He knew he liked the pictures in her book, but why? He pondered a bit, spacing out to a degree. "Hmmm, I think I understand..." He said finally, not realizing he'd chewed up about half of his pen in his distracted state. "Oh damnit..." he swore under his breathe, the irritation causing the purplish haze to begin escaping his lips.
Upon retrieving a new pen, Mugen began writing like a man possessed. Explaining the feelings he experienced as he looked at the pictures, why he felt them, and how he felt when he wrote up how the colors blended together, shifting the eyes from one point of the picture to another. In the end, his write up came out to be around two pages long. "Oh... Uh..." even when he didn't mean to, Mugen tended to lose himself in his writing. "I think I wrote to much..." He said, scratching at his cheek a bit.
Widow giggled lightly, peering over at his page. "Oh, what was all this about not having any idea why you like it?" She had started on her own piece while he was more or less consumed with his writing, and looked up from adding one ot two last footnotes, as afterthoughts at the bottom of her neatly layed-out page of writing.
The poisonous fumes the boy had been breathing out on occasion, with each wave of frustration it seemed, did not appear to have any ill effect on Widow. Indeed she didn't even seem to notice it; whether this was her light-hearted nature, or the fact that she probably didn't have any real sense of smell to be affected in the first place, she didn't bat an eyelid over it.
"You can never write too much when it comes to a painting~" She added airily, putting the finishing touches on her own essay.
Mugen was a mathmatics buff, he'd always figured it came from the fact he disliked things being illogical. For him, math wasn't emotional, it just was. Facts were facts, so, when he'd taken a closer look at the artistry he began to notice all the geometrical shapes and how they interacted to make something as beautiful as the painting. He'd delved a bit deeply into the mathmatical aspects of it however; which might have ended up getting him some points deducted.
"I guess I just went with what I did like... And applied it to the artistry you had shown. Dunno, I guess even things like numbers can be beautiful if you look hard enough." He said somewhat thoughtfully, though even as he loosened up... Slightly, to give his answer, the tone of his voice stayed sharp and to the point. He still didn't feel all that comfortable around her, though if this was her day to day attitude, Mugen wondered for a moment if he'd ever feel truly at ease with her around. She didn't however seem like a bad person, so he wouldn't completely dismiss the idea of calling her a friend in the future...
Widow folded up her notes neatly, before packing away her pens in their case, closing her text books and stacking everything in an orderly fashion, one of top of the other. "Numbers are beautiful, words are beautiful...everything has a beautiful side, if you're inclined to look at it that way." She said with another of her small, simple smiles.
She nodded to him, smile unfaltering, before rising smoothly to her feet, clutching her stack of books tidily in her four slender arms, and moving to deliver her essay to the teacher. It was difficult to decipher just what she thought of the towering reptile boy, as she seemed equally kind an airy, friend and foe alike. However, she appreciated that he had gotten interested and written so much, for whatever reason.
Studying the history of art, aside from reading and poetry of course, was her very favorite passtime, afterall.
