I'm asking this question on behalf of my father.
He's running a marathon in 10 days and didn't tell me until yesterday that he could easily reach around 90% of his allowed maximum heart rate (using both 220-age and 205.8-age*0.685 formulae). The thing is, at 90% max heart rate, his rate of perceived exertion is only around 5 or 6.
The question is, do you think it's safe for him to increase his exertion to around 8-ish even if it means it'll cause his heart rate to spike possibly past his allowed max heart rate?
Right now, I'm telling him to be conservative and not go past the max heart rate but he's still complaining that his exertion's pretty low.
