When they speak Vietnamese to me, I respond back in English (since I don't know how to answer them back in Vietnamese), and when I ask them a question in English, they respond back in Vietnamese. Sometimes my mom and my aunt would mix Vietnamese and English together in normal conversation with each other or with their other siblings. Here's an example of code-switching between Vietnamese and English with my family: Me: Ba, can I have some thach den? (grandma, can I have some black green grass jelly?) Grandma: Ah-ah, chờ chút, ba cho an. (sure, just wait a moment while I prepare it) I have also heard that Franponais (French+Japanese mixed together) and Spanglish (English+Spanish) are examples of code-switching as well. If the relatively stable informal mixture of two languages is called code-switching, then would the mixing of Japanese and English in a single phrase or sentence be considered as code-switching as well?

Yup! My city is bilingual, so while I use English more, there are times where I will switch to French with friends or strangers on the street or co-workers.
I speak English at home, though. I've done it with Italian sometimes with my grandmother, but for the most part we speak English with some Italian words used (I call her "nonna" instead of "grandma")
Here's a good one for you: Franglais. I hear it a lot in Canada - it's English and French.

I'd love for that to happen, too bad my parents only know English-and a bit of French.
My friend would do that with her dad, he was a native Frenchman so whenever he would speak French she would reply in English, I thought it was cool...I was so jealous emo
Occasionally I'll ask my parents a question in French, if I've just finished doing French work or studying, without thinking, I'm grateful that they took French in high school, it makes those moments more satisfying when they know what I say... or something. I forgot where I was going with that.

I love hearing Spanglish. A friend of mine uses "Danglish" with his sister and friends. Danglish = Danish + English. 4laugh

I use Franglais with a couple French-speaking people I know, and...whatever French + German is called...with a teacher at my school who knows the two.
Code switching is amusing. X)

I code-switch a lot at home (purposely) xd --between Gujarati and English. And I sometimes use random Hindi words that I know lol.
And on a related note, since my dad and mom grew up speaking different dialects of Gujarati, I switch between the dialects too (again purposely; I like talking in my dad's dialect, but I use the one my mom speaks occasionally). Anyone know what that would be called? Still code-switching? Cuz it doesn't seem like it. confused
Edit: Also, when I was beginning to self-study Italian, my Spanish wouldn't affect my Italian at all, but when I would talk in Spanish, Italian words would sometimes come to my head. xP

Yep, all the time. o3o I'm an avid Spanglish speaker and I sometimes swing Japanese-English when I talk to my friend who speaks both. I like it, because I feel like we're speaking something entirely secret. xD Even if it's not.

My grandfather didn’t know how to speak Portuguese, only Galician
So we sort of understood what he asked, since Galician and Portuguese are similar.
Here is what a few chat was like:
I: Avô, como foi o seu dia? (Grandfather, how was your day?)
Grandfather: Moi ben, fillo, grazas. (Very good, thank you [for asking], son).
I: Como você acordou? (Portuguese) (Did you awake well?)
Grandfather: Un pouco canso, e vostede? (Galician) (A little tired, what about you?)
Just so you know: Moi ben, fillho, grazas in Portuguese would be
Muito bem, filho, obrigado!

lol I never knew that it had a name, but my role-playing character and three of my characters in one of my book series do that all the time! Especially Saira. She tends to start cursing in several languages, and when she's excited or frightened (it takes a LOT to frighten her) she uses so many so quickly that not even those who are used to it can understand any of it. It's quite amusing.
As for me, I'm too shy to do it. I might use some Japanese with my brother, but I stay away from everything else (Arabic, Gaelic, Italian, French, Latin...) I just can't get myself to speak up in a language I hardly know. gonk

I code switch. Or atleast use it a lot. xD; Especially when it comes to family and stuff.
Before I started studying italian as much, my grandma would say something in the italian, and then I would reply (in english) and we understood each othere through that sense. xD;; But now I'm learning how to speak it!! biggrin Which is cool.
Anyways, today, I got my grandma to "code switch" or atleast, she was the one who replied in the different language.
She was on the phone with a friend and was speaking in english, and I had a box and I had forgotten where she wanted me to put it, so I gave a simple, "Dove" (where) and she said, "In the bedroom" lol. It was cool.
A lot of times when I speak with mexicans I'll say something in spanish and they'll reply in english. x_x
