disloyal opportunist
Dan K. ThatcherDan threw the first handfull of dirt onto the wrappings of his dead captain's body, down into the rough grave he had dug for him just inside the southernmost forests of Archibald's rest. He didn't want to be disturbed and he definitely didn't want his captain's body being unearthed by a monsoon or a flood. Dan took a step back after throwing the dirt and gave a nostalgic melancholy sigh.
"I've lost another family," he whispered, feeling an ache in his jaw like he might cry but suppressing it as he always did. He picked up the shovel that was leaned up against a dark pile of moist, loamy soil and began shovelling the soil back into the grave as fast as he could but he had to keep it neat. He owed his captain that much after he didn't manage to save him and he didn't know where to find his family to offer some sort of condolences or apologies. He had to pay him what little respects he could given the circumstances. Soon enough the grave was filled and Dan took the captain's sword off his belt before he drove it deep into the groud to mark his captain's grave and he placed his captain's hat on top of it. He stood only for a few seconds. His head was bowed, his eyes were foggy and distant, his mouth lined as a morose grimace and he held his hat down at his chest. After paying his captain that last respect he put his marine hat snugly on his head and headed west along the dirt road that led to the dock where he would wait for a boat to pass by. He held his captain's coat over his shoulder the whole way, just under a bag which held the bounty holding captain's wrapped head. The head in the bag would get no respect at all. In fact, Dan planned to turn it in for the bounty. It made him better to think of this as selling the head as if it were an unwanted gift from a lousy friend. When he reached the dock he kicked the side of a skinny palm tree walked around to removed the Leaves.
He droved the stripped bare palm tree into the ground just at the edge of the dock in the clearest patch he could find and hung his captain's caot at the top as a sign to any passing navy ships.
Now all that was left was to wait. He lay down a the foor of the makeshift flagpole, pulled his hat over his eyes and started going to sleep.
