--my opinion--
Tifa was starry-eyed for a hero to come and save her, and pushed the promise on Cloud. All I ever saw was Tifa having to plead Cloud to promise
Tifa had to ask three times before Cloud finally agreed to it, and he didn't sound all that anxious about it. In fact, I think Tifa practically forces him into it. The last time she asks him, she says, "Come on--! Promise me----!" She didn't give Cloud much choice, did she? Seriously,wouldn't he be eager to make that promise? Also, he says, "All right.... I promise." Does that really seem like he wants to do it? Or does it seem more like hesitance?
Also, why would you ask someone, "Will you be in the newspapers if you do well?", unless you're only interested in fame and glory? Mind you, she asks this before she EVER suggests a promise of ANY kind.
Tifa "Hey, why don't we make a promise?"
"Umm, if you get really famous and I'm ever in a bind....."
"You come save me, all right?"
Cloud should only come save her IF he becomes famous first?IF? Don't bother saving me unless you become famous first?

Yes, that is wht I interpeted, and I will get flames and stuff for this, but I HATE Tifa.....I'm sorry, and there I said it. But she is just so clingy and annoying in teh game!

But she is just so clingy and annoying in teh game! omg i feel the exact same way! and what i really hate is when guys like her only because of her boobs... stare ...not her personality

This was done a long time ago (and it sounds like you might have somewhat remembered that) but it was erased in the remodeling if not some time earlier. Besides, your thoughts are much more apropriately collected than that of before. Good job.

She's some super martial artist that trained under Zangan, yet she's all over Cloud trying to get him to save her like in some far-fetched romance novel? Hmm.

I think she was only asking about the newspaper thing so she would know to look out for him in there since he most likely wouldn't be able to communicate with his hometown very often.
And the becoming famous before saving her part. I think that she correlated becoming famous with becoming a very powerful fighter. How can he rescue her without being a powerful fighter?
I don't think Tifa is meant to come across as some kind of gold-digger/power-hungry gal.

you know, in the beginning they planned to make it only cloud, barret, and aeris. Colud may have made that promise to aeris, but they changed it after deciding for her to die crying and so it could've originally been a broken promise, giving more reason for the whole "get sephiroth" thing.

oh no not tifa...........she's one of my top favorite female characters 3nodding 3nodding
besides, she still love cloud after she knew that it was Zack who made it to soldier and cloud was the "little guy" of shinra, she stayed with him after that and still wanted him to be her hero ........and what's wrong with wnating your own hero redface every girl wants to get save.....

I don't think Tifa is meant to come across as some kind of gold-digger/power-hungry gal. i understand your thoughts completely, but there other traits of a hero besides just strength and I dont think tifa understood that

Me niether, and I'm a FFVII freak. I'm literally debating (with my life) on another thread about who would win between Cloud and Dart (Legend of Dragoon).
But I have heard nothing of the Aeris promise thing, it wouldn't make a lot of sense, although it would really kill Cloud even more if he broke a promise because he couldn't protect her.
