≶ Broken Plains ≷
The broken plains looming in the center of Roanor, dark barren lands harboring shattered ruins and broken fissures, remnants of a kingdom long past whose name history forgot. Many roads pass there and to travel through Roanor almost every route must cross it, standing as a constant reminder that anything which rises must also fall.

There was a flare of heat as the earth ignited in flames. In the center of the inferno knelt Montague. Vertigo clutched at her stomach, and her head felt cloudy. A thin stream of blood flowed down from her nostrils. She wiped it away, holding her head in her hands and closing her eyes. She mentally called off the flames. She knelt there for a moment, trying to recover. She did not know why she felt this way. Perhaps it was residue from the ward? An unknown aftereffect from a spell? Nevertheless, she waited until the cobwebs of fatigue were pushed away.
* * * * Moments later, she opened her eyes. Remembering what had happened, she quickly scanned the new area. Where am I? : thought the half-elf. She had never been to such a place. Above her stood the roof of what used to be a castle, although parts of it were gone. It stood with the help of pillars. It was a hall. Debris of the castle were everywhere: paintings of deceased rulers, tarnished and rusted armor, and so on. Montague was amazed. Was this the place she had heard of? The ruins of a forgotten castle? She had little time to think. Five Kornaks stalked nearby. Montague hid behind a pillar, peeking out. She knew of their nature: most were nomads, traveling from place to place. But she wondered: why were they here? There was nothing here: no food, people. Perhaps they wished to retrieve something from the ruins? But what could possibly interest a Kornak in such a place? She quickly whispered a spell, placing her hand upon the cold, marble pillar. Her body melded with the stone. Only the outline of her face remained upon the stone's surface. She watched the Kornak as they walked nearby. As they came ever closer, she decided it was time to strike. Whispering a counterspell, her hand reached out from the stone. She grabbed unto the arm of the Kornak, pulling him within the stone and melding him with it. She came from the stone. The four other Kornak shrieked in anger. Two ran at Montague, while the others ran away. A bladed whip appeared in Montague's hands. She manipulated it as if she was dancer, her graceful movements as if she was a dancer. It snaked out, wrapping itself around the neck of a Kornak. She wrenched her wrist upwards, twisting the whip, crushing the windpipe of the Kornak. It convulsed once and fell. The other fell in a similar manner. The two others fled, running away in fright. Montague cried out a spell. A huge flaming serpent appeared. It bared its fangs. The two ran the other way, but the tail of the beast elongated, surrounding it with a ring of fire. They two cowered as they were roasted alive. As they fell Montague called off the flames. She sat down, conflicted with thought. She pondered about her fatigue, the residue, and tried to remember anything about place. As she thought, another wave of fatigue overcame her, and she fell asleep.

Montague opened her eyes. She had awakened. She sat up, her back against the cold marble pillar. It took her a moment to remember where she was and what she was doing. The place was quiet. It was getting quite dark. Montague heard footsteps. Hiding behind the pillar, she peeked out and saw a man. He held a map and looked thoroughly confused. Montague thought nothing of him. She did not see him as a threat, nor did she fear him, although she was curious. She readied her whip, holding it in her left hand. She stood up slowly and quietly, peeking out and watching the man.

jack walked around for a while oblivious to his stalker, he tried to read the map but it might as well have been in elvish for all he understood it, "oh god jack you've done it again, gotten yourself lost again, how the hell do you do these things" he continued walking around for a while before he stopped and sat under a ruined archway "well, s**t"

Montague watched from afar at the confused young man, who turned his map around and backwards. She smiled and cupped her palms before her, blowing into them. A cerulean light was emitted from it, wavering and ebbing, bobbing in midair. She blew on the light, and it separated into 5 orbs of light, each flowing slowly to the man as if they were fireflies. They circled around the man, the curious orbs flaring slightly. They changed color: from cean to emerald to gold, and to a bright flame color. They turned violet, swirling around the man. The faerie lights, or the will o' wisps, continued changing color.

*its gotta be around here somewhere im just too stupid to know where* he had huffed sadly before he jumped "oh sweet gods above!" the orbs had startled him, he stood up and watched them hover in a circle above him changing colors "yup, its happened, I've finally cracked, lost my head, sun stroked" he felt his forehead "yup, definitely, im mad as a hatter" he sighed and sat back down "well might as well enjoy my insanity then" he looked up at the lights happily

Montague exclaimed with alarm as a two skeletal beings lunged at her, their armor glistening. Quickly, she chanted a spell. However, while in mid-chant, a figure in intricate garments summoned forth a white napalm. It engulfed her, her eyes widening. A split second later, however, she reappeared, behind the two skeletal warriors. She had casted her mirage-doppelganger spell she had hurriedly chanted just in time to escape the spell. She waved her arms in a flourish, and a shock wave was released from her palms, sonic damage unleashed to hopefully destroy the undead warriors. Before she could see if her spell had taken its effect, she moved quickly to her main assaulter. The flickering orbs of flames she had created followed her mental command: they joined together, forming a flaming silhouette of a scarlet phoenix, flames licking up its great wings. It dove down, dive-bombing, aiming at Charlemagne.

Wraiths were left behind from the remains of the fallen skeletons. Their forms were like smoke, and they sped towards Montague, their mouths gaping open, screeching with unearthly and mourning voices. Montague felt her skin tingle and go cold. She felt her life force being sucked from her, her energy being drained from her body. She fell to her knees, a wave of fatigue overwhelming her. Voices echoed around her, taunting her, attacking her. She felt the air crackle with energy. A bolt of energy narrowly missed her, deflected by one of her arcane wards. It sizzled and crackled, a line of smoke rising from the parched ground. She felt another drain of energy, used for her ward. That woke her up. Barking out a quick spell, a ray of light flickered from her palm. It burst through the smoky, ebony form of the twin wraiths. They shrieked, their cries rising in pitch and volume. Her whip appearing in her hands, she leaped away, her body's movements surpassing that of most any dancer. It snaked out, undulating. Wrapping itself around the intricately clothed form of Charlemagne, its bladed edge lunged.

Montague saw but a blur of motion, and she felt wind whistle swiftly past her right cheek. Touching her cheek, she felt hot liquid flowing from her cheek, staining her dark skin. She looked behind her. A blade was left stabbed into the earth, bloodstained and radiating negative arcane energy. She heard angry whispers, insults and taunts, in her mind. She felt alone and defenseless. Fear and dread clawed and clutched at her stomach. She fell to her knees, hugging herself. Kneeling down before the tattooed man, his towering form over him with all authority, she glared. "Why .. Why are you doing this?" :she asked, her voice trembling.

Despair and hopelessness cleaved through her soul, her body shaking with fearful anticipation of the man's next move. Her body felt cold, a line of sweat dripping down her cheeks. She barely felt anything, and she barely felt the grip of the man's cold gauntlet. She faintly heard what the man said. She barely heard the words 'undead' and 'reanimate' These feelings were not foreign to her. She faintly remembered ... Five sorcerers clad in armor, the symbol of the Kingdom on their breastplates. Their palms lifted, she remembered ... her soul being torn from her body, punishment for her deceit to the Kingdom. Then it came: the image of her family being killed, slain by the soldiers. The power of that image overwhelmed the hopelessness. Her eyes widened. She brushed the hopeless emotions away. She managed to stand, still shaking. She felt her body ache. She glared at the man. "You shall never control me. " :she said her voice firm. Her hands clenched around her whip, she slashed. A line of flames burst from its edge, the halo of intense light giving her a cover to escape. And she did. She ran with all her might, her feet aching, ignoring the pain. She ran and ran.
