"People often say that motivation doesn't last. Well, neither does bathing-that's why we recommend it daily."

~Zig Ziglar

Motivation is my biggest problem in getting anything done. I am dreadful at staying consistent about any new goal, be it fitness-related or in any other area of my life.

Community helps by getting other people involved. If there's someone else you're reporting to about your successes, it encourages you to keep going. It's one part of motivation.

But we need more than someone to whom we can say "Look what I did!" We need something to look at as a motivator, either an image or facts or just anecdotes about how exercise has helped.

This Sticky post is for all of us to share stories, images, links, Fun Facts or just the things that make us want to try harder.

1) Exercise encourages your hair to grow.

Random, but apparently true. I hacked my hair off about six months ago -- the braids alone were 14 inches -- and got a 'boy' haircut. (A couple friends remarked that I looked like a lesbian. Kindly.) I've been looking into things that encourage hair to grow faster, and apparently healthy amounts of exercise is one of those things.

2) Exercise is an excellent mood-booster.

The reason I hear for this is because of the endorphin boost it gives you. It is January at the time of this posting, and I frelling hate winter -- I need whatever mood enhancement I can get.

3) I need something to counteract my sedentary habits.

My primary goal in life is to be a successful novelist. This means a lot of sitting down, staring at a computer screen and (hopefully) typing a lot of fictional events. I spend hours at this. Getting up even just to take a walk would go really far in improving my health in general.

4) If I keep training, my skills will improve.

Martial arts is kind of a big deal for me. It's a slow process of building skill sets and thinking about how you move your body, but it is also a steady process. As long as you keep training, you will see improvements. ...It's that "keep training" part which gets to me. If I get drained really fast in a workout, I tend to give up instead of pushing through to the re-energized stage (which really isn't that far of a jump; I just don't always make it). I really do need to make more of an effort with this.

Death Wears A White Dress

My motivation changes...

I was unhappy with my appearance so I figured I should change it. But now I'm happy with it so that can no longer be a motivator.

So I figured That "If I'm not getting better, I must be getting worse" and I strive to get better or maintain staying better.

Excellent thread. I love the quote at the top and I love your guys' reasons.

Always weigh the pros and cons before you sit around all day eating chips. For me, it's always about how I feel at the end of a certain time measurement. Whether it's the end of the day or the year, I'm always looking for a fulfilling conclusion.

Thus, exercising rather than sitting and eating junk food makes me feel better at the end of the day.

Put on your trainers and run.

Why?

Because running/jogging is an impact sport, and that impact will help build your bone density -- and when you're older, this will be really important.

It's difficult to look ahead at where you'll be in thirty or forty years, but the decisions you make now will have a HUGE impact on your health later. While swimming is a great full-body workout, it offers no impact. The bones of a lifelong swimmer are remarkably less dense than those of a lifelong jogger. If you can do both, awesome -- but if you have to choose, keep in mind your bone health.

...I needed this information, myself, because I haaaaate jogging. Getting myself to put on my cross-trainers and get out the door is a terrific pain in the butt. When I learned about this, I finally conceded that I have at least one very good reason to make myself jog.

You don't need to start with two mile runs. Honestly, I'm still half-assing it. The important part is that I'm getting myself to begin the practice. It can only get easier.

I really don't have motivation. Maybe to one day fight in the UFC but I honestly just like playing sports and exercising. MMA gets me really pumped up I get such a rush in fights. I don't have motivation, and I really don't need motivation.

Because it's rewarding...

For me, this is the biggest thing. Evidence that you've actually accomplished something. If you keep doing whatever you're doing, you're going to get better. For me, my jogs have been getting easier and there's nothing quite like the satisfaction of knowing that what killed you yesterday was a conquest today.

This is going to sound really odd....but 85% of my exercise reasoning and motivation is zombies. My entire exercise plan itself is designed around things i'll need for a zombie apocalypse (strong body to fight them off, looots of cardio for running away) So, every time I think about not exercising or just slacking a little I think about being eaten by zombies, it even helps me push myself a bit harder every week ^_^
