For now, I just practice in my socks. I used to practice on these small pieces of wood, but they're too small! I want a bigger piece of wood to practice on.

Fortunately, I have laminate floors which makes it easy to just practice barefoot while watching tv or whatever. But before that I used to tap in my garage on a big piece of plywood raised up about 1/2 inch (: .

Truthfully, I don't really. When I was younger I tried tapping in my kitchen also, but my mother made me stop for the same reason. If I want to tap at all outside of my dance studio I go outside in regular shoes and attempt to practice.

If you have the right type of sneakers you can practice in them on any hard surface. I used to do it all the time when I was still an active dancer. They even have a similar sound so you can hear yourself making all the sounds you need to for a step.

For me, it's in socks on my carpet in my room. The nearest good dance studio is at least an hour away, and I outgrew my tapshoes, so I really haven't really tapped in a few years, unfortunately.
