So I wanted to set everyone up here with a decent guide on what to do if you're not prepared... this will cover every apocalypse outside of environmental destruction and nuclear, from mad max to zombieland to aliens to robots to a simple crop failure leading to the fall of governments into anarchy

First spot to go:

Forget the grocery store, forget Radioshack and forget the car lots, you know the best spot to go

A sporting goods store: That's right, in one of these you'll find the following items that can help you on your way, many of these will be missed by the mobs of looters going for exercise equipment and cash registers

Underarmor: That's right, these shirts are designed to be warm in the winter and cool in the summer, for hygene purposes get three to five of these, obvious tactical coloring, this is MORE IMPORTANT than any firearm... because there's no reason to run from the zombies if you wont survive the winter
full faced helmet and goggles (Zombies only), Doesn't matter the style, the idea is this, protect yourself from bloodspatter, protect yourself from falling and being knocked out
Hunting rifles: Many sporting goods stores have a stock of rifles, get the simplest gun you can find, generally speaking you'll want a 12 gauge shotgun or a .22 calibur, look for popular and better designed brands such as Ruger, Remington, Smith and Wesson, ect.
One Leatherman multi-purpose locking Knife: if you can't figure out the importance of this then you're already dead...
These generally include the following tools
one philips head screwdriver (USE THIS ONE FOR STABBING GAS CANS!!! DO NOT USE YOUR KNIFE)
One flathead screwdriver
one set of wire-cutters
one pair of small scissors (Great for emergency surgery
One knife (Great for emergency surgery)
one can opener

one Buck knife, preferably a classic-styled folding knife
one bowie knife
Steel Toed Boots, preferably 2 if possible
Next stop: Harley Davidson outfitter or a place to get gear for dirtbikes
Why?
Because the gear they offer, either way, will provide an extra layer of defense against zombies, and will provide warmth in the summer, not to mention when you finally steal yourself that sexy hog you'll be able to match in style

What are you looking for?
Steel-laced Jeans
, Leather Chaps/Leather Jacket (Harley styled thick leather): GO WITH THE THICKEST ONE YOU CAN, this will provide bite protection and warmth

Chestplate for a dirbiking (Can take a goodbaseball bat to it without cracking, great against mutants and gunless gangs,
Leatherman knife (If unobtainable elsewhere),
two zippo brand lighters lots of zippo flints (Four packets will take up no space and will hold roughly 20 flints, so take around eight packets), two-four containers of zippo lighter fluid,: YOU NEED WARMTH, ARSON, AND POSSIBLY CIGARETTES, TAKE THESE JUST INCASE YOU CAN'T GET A FIRE STARTED
Steel Toed boots: These are great, look for steel-toe and water proof if you're in an area where you'll be facing extreme cold, non-waterproof in a swampy area, and it doesn't matter in a sandy area, but always get steeltoe

OTHER NEEDED OBJECTS:
one hand-hatchet, for wood chopping and close quarters combat
one shovel
WAL-MART/K-MART
These places will be picked dry and will be dangerous, you already have your gear by this point, eat what you find and don't be afraid to loot a house, as for a close quarter's weapon, look for something that is light and durable, nothing else matters as your close-quarters combat is about keeping the enemy back.

also note: always remember how many shots you've fired, and always leave one for yourself

AFTER SHOPPING:

Your next step is easy, you have warmth and weapons... now head to the nearest wilderness, look for somewhere that feels safe; understand it isn't safe but it's the best spot you'll find

Start to acquire the needed materials to construct your shelter, if you need walls, use sticks...

if you're in the desert then... well you're ******** anyways

if you're in the woods, begin to chop down younger trees, stake them deeply in the ground at four corners and then use briars and bushes to provide a wall, figure out on your own how to keep the damned thing from caving in for you (It's really not that hard, some cross beams in correctly grooved wood with more briars around it)

about three feet from every corner of your new hut, dig a hole about six foot deep and four foot wide,

Connect these holes together

Climb out and go back to chopping small trees, chop each tree into three foot lengths, sharpen each end and bury them so that two feet are submerged in the ground

You now have a moat, your next step is to obtain two sturdy logs that can act as a bridge for your comfort but can be retracted if needed.

your final step is insulation of your new abode, go out to hunt, you'll need to find some larger animals such as deer or moose, as soon as you kill them, do your best to skin them and affix their skin to the walls... this isn't perfect and will smell like rot, but shouldn't be bad in the winter. if you dry it all out you'll be fine.

KEEP THE MEAT, you'll be living on meat for a few months, until the weather clears out

after the season clearly ends, you'll want to look around to see what's come of the world, If the apocalypse was on course when you left then you'll be one of the last ones left (AND I HOPE YOU BROUGHT SOMEONE TO HAVE SEX WITH OR YOU WONT GET ANY FOR THE REST OF TIME)
if it didn't end then.. congratulation, you're a moron.

P.S. so everyone knows I didn't so much as proof read that, which means I didn't back read it to make sure I included everything or didn't overly repeat things and contradict myself, hell, I didn't even spellcheck

the best place in the wilderness (some would disagree) is up against a rock wall.
sounds dumb, but that way you have one less front to defend against.

First Place I'm goin is to my grandpa's farm in Wyoming. There i will make fortifications and I will be able to defend that town and then I would take over small towns surrounding it. That's how it's done. And axes are no used for close quarters combat, pull out a handgun and bust a cap in the mother ********.

I live set apart from society, and already built and stocked my shelter and armory. This was all before I had given serious consideration to zombies, I was just an odd child. XD I prepare for everything, and modify as needed, but I only plan for the knowledgeable intel and known unknowns, I make no assumptions. That is why I dislike debating the effectiveness of weapons and armor. If anything ever did happen, we have no way of knowing how the creatures function, let alone how to combat or defend against them.
And honestly, I don't much care. My mind is survival, not bloodshed. My shelter is very well-defended, intended to withstand everything from bears and small animals to firearms and explosives. Yes, I have tested it as well. No need sitting on the bench if you can't play anyway lol. But I digress..
My point was, don't worry so much about killing. Yeah, keep weapons at all times, but remember they'll be much more useful against others humans or hunting game, you shouldn't waste ammunition experimenting. The game is distraction and avoidance; keep the creatures away from you so you can get the hell out of there and keep living unscathed.
Stock and defend, evade and rebuild. Taking potshots at a nearby roamer may help keep your moral up though. smile
