Marcus had heard the rucus a few blocks down of kids. The night was fairly young, the sun had set mere moments ago. He sighed and began to take his usual route though the city. He stopped when he noticed a shape against the wall. It looked human if humans could have cat ears. He approached quietly.

Marcus helped her up and glared at the direction the voices came from. "They won't hurt you again," he whispered inaudibly. His eyes softened when he looked at her again. "Where are your parents or friends?"

"You're welcome," Marcus said. The voices got closer still. Without a word he picked her up as gently as he could and began to run back the way he had come. He looked left then right before darting out of the alley and headed back toward his flat by the river.

Marcus managed the doors and took the elevator instead of the stairs. He went to the top of the building since his flat was more a penthouse. He worked the key into the lock while still holding her and opened the door. His flat was well furbished with the latest in television, computer, game systems, and furniture. His stereo clicked off when he entered. He shut the door with his foot before taking her to the couch. "Sorry but this is the best place for lighting," he said gently. "I'm going to get some stuff. I'll be right back."
