"You are not quite Alice, but Alice all the same. So does that mean you are the right Alice or just another Alice by name?"
Words that brushed by my ear as I rode the train to work. Turning my head, I found no one there. I turn the other way, and I see everyone else going on about their morning. I dare not ask if anyone heard anything, for everyone is hearing everything, and thus, not inclined to have heard only what I did. And besides, if I spoke up, I would only be making a fool of myself.
I've done that enough in high school.
I'm not a salary man, and even if I was, I don't look the part. I'm good with handy work, so I go around doing odd-jobs: construction worker, ramen delivery, grocery employee, etc. Everything is for the sake of making ends meet. I study all morning and afternoon, then I work evenings. When do I sleep? Who has time for that, as a college student, in a declining economy?
"Follow me, to a faraway place, a land filled with wonder. Curiouser and curiouser, Alice. Where has your charm gone?"
That voice again, I turn my head. Of course, no one is there. Perhaps it's from the lack of sleep. I wonder, am I coming down with something? Since tomorrow is an off day, I'll spend all my time resting. Surely that'll have me right again.
It is dark when I finally get off work. Not the usual dark either, but the kind so dark, no even thugs be on the streets. As such, I was rightly terrified for taking so long to finish up. So I had an idea, a brilliantly stupid idea, to take a shortcut.
There was a small grove of trees that seemed set apart from everywhere else. It was in-between work and my home, but...I always avoided it before. I don't know why, but I always got an eerie feeling when ever I came near that place. Something about it terrified me to my bones. But today, the lure of sleep was greater than ever, so I took the plunge.
After first entering the grove, my heart hammered like a taiko drum during festival contests. I told myself, just a few more feet, and I managed to calm down.
"Welcome to Wonderland, Alice. I'm glad to took to my invitation."
I turn my head, and there he is. Looming over me, suddenly. How had I not notice he was there. I back away, wanting to escape. But he seized the front of my jacket and pulled me in close. So close, we were, that our faces were centimeters away from touching.
"Alice, your name is Alice. You don't quite look the same as you did when you last came, but you are most definitely Alice. Even if you hardly are any such as you were before."
I found all kinds of things wrong with his sentence. And before I could say so, I was falling. Falling...falling...falling. Many things flashed my sight. A hat with a numbered card...a monocle rabbit with a ticking clock...a deck of cards, all hearts...a cat whose smile seemed to split its face, a smoking bug, two eggheads, a talking dog, floating doors, bloody roses, a shooting hedgehog, a flamingo club, bright lights, singing mice, a jittery rabbit, more smoke, more lights, and then a loud voice shrieking to split my ear drums. I saw the flash of an axe as it came spinning towards me and then...!
I woke up in my room. The clock at my bedside reading a quarter after seven. I let out a sigh. Then I frowned in confusion. For, since the beginning of that dream, something has been bothering. It was consistent, but I never acted on it, and now I shall: "My name doesn't even resemble Alice. So where did that come from?"
