I've been having a rough time of life for the last two years,
and because of it, my art - which I cherish above most everything - has been suffering.

I'd like advice, not only on how to improve, but how to motivate myself as well.
Thank you to anyone who gives us some advice :3

Well...i go through the same thing, only with writing. I'm not sure if you've looked at my dA (added you little while ago lol) but i'm not the greatest artist xD

Any who, you can't force yourself into doing it, or into improvement. This stuff comes in time. If you have ideas, why not do a quick lazy sketch or write it down? (2nd one if its simple lol) Later, when you go back to the sketch, you'll look at it and think "Huh, this could be a lot better! O:<" Thus hopefully giving you motivation.

Another thing, do NOT tell yourself that the piece you're working on is bad. Yeah, while you're working on it there are going to be somethings that can be improved, but depending on your personal condition of the time, they may or may not be major. If it is something major, go back and change it to how you want it.

Try not to get frustrated with yourself. If you do, take a break missy! xD Too much is too much, simple.

I agree with you 100%, school should definitely come before art, so when you do work on it, manage your time. Put aside a set amount of time (i.e: 30minutes per day for a painting), and this can change depending on what the piece is, how difficult it is, and when it's due (if it is).

As far as improvement, i don't have much to say, but i know the one thing that helps me is to look at someone's art/writing and just read/look it over and over again do see how they do things (not to copy them by any means.)

And of course, with time/practice comes the beautiful result of improvement.

Hope I helped <3

@Mr Joe
I can't really work on something for just 30 minutes. I'm very slow and methodical and when I get into what I'm doing, I can't help but continue until I either exhaust myself or finish D:

The real problem I find is that...my art is all the same. It's developing, but it lacks a certain appeal to me. No particular style, and has none of that 'oomf'.

Generally my attitude towards my art is I think it's fine, great even, until I look back on it a few months later.

Hmmm :/

I'm not sure what exactly to say to that. Then, maybe try not looking at other people's art and experiment with your own.
Keep redrawing things until you're satisfied with it, until it has a bit of you in it.
OOOooo, Try creating something that you feel, something that you've gone through, felt, etc and put it on paper/canvas. (what i usually do is just go with whatever my first idea is, alter it only a bit while creating it.)

Another suggestion is maybe just going out of your comfort zone and drawing stuff you don't usually draw, paint, etc.

^^" sorry if this doesnt help any...
P.s I agree with Punky O:<

Oh dear, your art is not lacking, is quite cute already!
I believe it's your perfectionism what has been whipping you, partly.

I must agree with Joe, try drawing new things, you might surprise yourself (:

I'll gladly add you to my DA account (kujayouko), but I must warn you, I often abandon it, it's been REALLY hard for me to draw the last years, I've got a psychological block to kill.

Thank you everyone (*d'aww Noises)
I'm actually considering starting a sort of Auto Biography-type comic.
