Well, you should tell her that everything is alright, first. Give her a hug. No matter the situation, things can get better with a smile and a hug. However, if she is seriously getting hurt, a life is more important than a promise.

However, if she is seriously getting hurt, a life is more important than a promise. that's good advice. Let her know that you're there for her in whatever happens, tell her if she ever needs someone to call or to talk to or to spend time with you're there. Sometimes the only thing you CAN give is support, because sometimes there's no right, fix-it words.

Tell her everything will be okay in the future and in [x] amount of years, she'll be free and it'll pass by quicker than she thinks, and with the cutting. Tell her it won't do s**t about her problem, especially if she doesn't want to be sent off. All it's gonna do is screw your body up and leave a bunch of scars. Believe me, I know.

I know what you're going through. Tell your friend that cutting herself isn't the answer. It'll hurt her more than relieve. She'll probably say it's relieving, but tell her it's really not. You need to convince her that soon she'll be free to do whatever she want.

She needs help with the cutting. There are online groups if she does not want to go to a doctor, but she has to talk to someone. If she refuses, tell her parents yourself. She may hate you at first, but she will thank you in the future.

Whether she 'wants' to or not, she needs a psychiatrist, maybe not asylum, but some kind of mental help if a break up leads to cutting.
