MY HANDS HURT SO BAD gonk

I think I have arthritis now, geez man. I'm meeting a friend in Feb and she has a Deaf husband, I really wanted to learn some basic conversational signs as well as master the alphabet so when push comes to shove I can just fingerspell...But now my hands are aching xD

Anyone else here know any Sign Language?

I used to know ASL in 6th grade. It was a mandatory class because there were so many deaf kids at my school that the teachers wanted us to be able to communicate with them. Unfortunately, I forgot it all when I got to middle school.

I only know the alphabet by heart.

I actually took ASL back in high scool, and I still have a pretty good memory of it, though I have forgotten some of what I learned due to lack of use. The college I go to offers it, and I might take that course at some point. Much to my disappointment, I recently found out that the high school I went to no longer offers it (I was flipping through a list of courses (ie, a course selection booklet) from there that someone had, and ASL was nowhere in there, so I take that to mean that they no longer offer it).

I know a bunch of sign language, I could probably hold on a decent conversation with someone.
I'm taking a college class on it this spring and I went and got a headstart.

I knew a lot more when I was younger, because my mother taught it to us to help us learn to speak and read faster. :V

But yeah, I'm learning it so that when I become a speech therapist, I could communicate with mutes and deaf children.

I know some, but my teacher is gung ho in just ASL. She gets really pissed if we use PSE or ESS. She wants us to get as far away from English as possible, but the easiest way to do that would be to have deaf people sign it.
I like it, but fingerspelling when you read it is evil. Deaf people do it so fast I don't know how they can do it without going crosseyed.

No, unfortunately. We did have to take it one year during elementary school, although, it was elementary school--we didn't really accomplish much. Since then, I haven't used it sad , and my high school doesn't offer it, so I've pretty much forgotten it. :/

Unless I take ASL interpreting classes, I think I'll use PSE out of habit.

I took ASL for 3 years in high school. I still remember a lot of it, but my receptive skills aren't so great since I haven't actually signed with anyone in the last couple years.

They made us take sign language all through elementary school and I have no idea why. So nowadays I can understand a lot of random bits of it and sign some useless things. emo

ASL is language, too! I find it appropriate in here smile

I know enough sign to converse, but I thinks it's more PSE than ASL, really. I love being able to communicate, though! People get so excited about it that the little I know makes it so worthwhile!

Back in...3rd grade? 4th grade? I used to know a bit of ASL. We started learning a bit in school because of the deaf kids there, and I thought it was interesting and tried to learn some on my own. Of course...I was 8...it didn't turn out well. I promptly forgot practically everything I learned when I moved though xD

Yes, haha, practicing ASL is a bit painful after a while... XD Especially if you have silly, short fingers like me, and they mess up the signs after just a little while and you have to keep repeating them over and over... >.< ASL's still terrific, though, and what a great reason to pick it up! Good for you. <3
