I think it happened once or twice to me actually... but I can't remember the names of the products.

Well, I suppose they do since it counts as exposure. I mean, if you don't know about something you're not going to buy it.
Maybe on a subconscious level as well. Like, they don't buy a certain brand of product over another not because of the things said in the advertisement but things like the imagery and general feel. Like, maybe they feel it's too childish or not professional enough or it's just plain misogynistic. On the other hand, other people may want to buy that brand over another for those exact reasons.
So I think it really varies on the person. Some are easily persuaded whereas some are not. Not to mention, everyone's looking for different things.
