Dragonkin
Long ago, when dragons still had their wings, the greatest of the dragon mages partnered with the greatest of the human races to do something that no one had ever tried before. Using the blood of the dragons and the science of the humans they created entirely new races – the Dragonkin. Five races were created. Of these, four were tied to the dragon blood and one very special race was tied to the blood of a very special human mage.
These creatures survive to this day. They live wild but can be easily tamed by human and dragon alike and live as very intelligent pets or familiars alongside either race.
Wyvern – Common – These creatures were created using the air element and can be found in rocky areas where there are plenty of cliffs to nest in and strong currents upon which to fly. They have no forearms but the claws on their wings can act as hands with limited mobility. They are high-energy creatures and are very active. They glide mostly and can cause a bit of damage indoors if there aren’t enough things to perch on up high. An adult wyvern is about the size of a medium dog.
Cockatrice – Common – Cockatrices were created from the earth element and resemble a mix between long-legged birds and dragons. Their skin is mottled and feathers are scattered across their bodies. They cannot fly but with their long legs they can run very very fast. They are found on open plains. An adult cockatrice can stand up to five feet tall and are able to carry children. In some cities cockatrice racing is a sport and talented children can make a good amount of money by being jockeys. Cockatrices are extremely loyal and gentle.

Salamander – Uncommon – These creatures are made from fire and can withstand incredible amounts of heat. They are difficult to find as they prefer to remain near constant heat sources. Volcanoes, hot springs, and certain areas of the southern desert are where they live. Salamanders are fairly lethargic when away from heat. However, if tossed on a fire for a short amount of time they will absorb some of the energy and become very aggressive. Salamander fighting is now a sport but is illegal in most cities. They can grow to be the size of a tomcat.

Drake – Uncommon – Drakes are water element creatures and live in the ocean or lakes. They are fairly easy to find but very hard to catch as they are intelligent enough to chew through any nets dropped to snare them. Drakes are social and curious animals and will follow a ship for days to watch the people onboard. They can live out of water indefinitely but prefer to be submerged every now and then, especially when sleeping. Drakes are the size of seals.
Spectrum – Rare – The fifth race of Dragonkin was created using the power of a very rare type of human mage. Spectrum magic – magic born from the flow of light and color – is very difficult to control and can only be used by those born with the ability to. There have only been three in recorded history and each one has died young – killed by their own magic. When the Dragonkin were created one of these three mages helped in the creation and wielded the spectrum to create her own breed of creatures. These Spectrums are human in shape, pixie-like, and are as diverse in color and appearance as the magic they were made from. It is not understood how Spectrums appear but they will eventually find a human or dragon and stay with them for the rest of their life. Spectrums do not exist as other creatures do and do not need to eat, sleep, or breath but they cannot interact with this world very easily and will pass through most solid objects. They are also the only Dragonkin that can use magic and will wield the spectrum to help their owner if needed. Spectrums do not talk but are very intelligent. A grown Spectrum stands at around three feet.
