Gathering around a "Christmas Tree" was originally a Pagan tradition. Paganism was a large religion in Europe until Christianity set in. I don't know who was the first to decorate one though.

I heard the Germans had started it by bringing in branches and the such to decorate their houses, but that didn't seem to add up with the whole tree tradition. That does make sense though, thanks. o:
