I shoulda added this to the vend guide, will do it later but figured here's a good spot for it.
If you can live without the item for a week or so, you can save yourself a tremendous amount of gold. Or, make some gold too.
When the item is released, for that first day (or two days, if the item is released really late at night like this month's), the item hits a very high value (there are fluctuations I'll discuss in a moment). After that initial rush, the item will start to drop in value before it hits rock-bottom, about a month or two later depending on the item. Then it will start to climb again.
Lets look at the past few months worth of items. I'll list month, item, Day 1 price average, what it bottomed out to later on, and where it's at right now.
August - Whips Day 1: 7.5K Bottomed out: 5K Now: 8K
The whip recently spiked to over 9K, but the new item has knocked them back a bit. But it took forever just to get back to their day 1 price, and you could find them for less even back in December.
September - Pandy pack/hard shell pack Day 1: 7.5K Bottomed out: 2.5K Now: 3.5K
As you can see with the pandy pack, it has not even gotten back to the price of the sealed envelope yet. That means 5K gold difference between waiting a while and having the item on Day 1.
October - Coco Kitty/Wind Security Blanket Day 1: 15.5K Bottomed out: 8K Now: 11.5K
Even with the recent forced inflation, the Coco still isn't back to what it went for on Day 1. I love the Coco Kitty, but that's 4 to 7K difference just to have one for the first few days.
November - Sno Yeti/Nitemare Parasol Day 1: 8K Bottomed out: 4K Now: 4.5K
Not much time has passed, but I sold all my Novembers on Day 1 for 8K, and bought them back a few weeks later for 4K.
December - Fox Mink/Ice Tiara Day 1: 6K Bottomed out: 3K Now: 4K
These may bottom out lower actually, as not much time has passed. Gaia also released these items at a very bizarre time, which made the Day 1 price very sucky. Still, you could get the items for 3K within 3 or 4 days.
Summary: New items are always fun, but there's a cost attached to them. If you can wait a few days, it might be worth it.
If you bought 2 sealed envelopes every month since August, and kept the items on Day 1, you'd have cost yourself over 35,000 g.

Also, generally speaking, the item goes way up past the price of the sealed. The only exception I saw was December's item, which was released at 1 am on the 24th when no one was really around, thus killing the value.
Here's my strategy, and you might want to adjust it to fit your own needs.
Every month, I buy 10 sealed envelopes. This costs around 50 to 55K (this is a lot, I know, but just hear me out rofl ). Lets say 55K, so I'm -55K in the bank account.
When the item comes out, I sell all 10. I make 75 to 80K on average. Lets say 75K. That's +20K profit.
A month or two later, I buy 5 of the letters back. Lets say they cost 4K per letter at that time. That's my 20K profit gone, but I have 5 letters for FREE!
If the item happens to actually be good, like the Coco was, then you actually make a ton of money in addition to getting free letters.
So taking the example of 2 sealed envelopes per month (more realistic), you spend 11K to get them. You sell the items for 15K. You buy them back later, and it costs you only 4K for 2 items when you work it all out. You paid 2K for the item instead of 7.5 on day 1.

Shelling out $2.50 for a sealed each month adds to the profit even more. I figure that is a given, though. sweatdrop

Also polkie, I am a little skittish about selling and rebuying, what if the item takes off, then will not lower again? Has that ever happened?

I know whatcha mean, but so long as you buy back within the first two months, it's okay. I guess the best example of this is the Coco Kitty from October. I kept it cuz I thought, wow, what an awesome item! It's my fav 2005 item. But it sold for 15 to 17K in the first few days. Then it fell to 8K. It was 9K two months after the fact, and only mid-January did it go up to 12K. To me, that's the best item to come out in a really long time, but it still has yet to return to the day 1 prices even 4 months after it was released. January 2006 swords as you all saw were going for 7 to 8.5K and now you can find them for 4 or 5K. The Feb scarves have already dropped from high 7-low 8 to mid-6s this morning, and we're not even out of February yet.
