The first step to this process is quite easy. You know all the books out there that help you figure out how to set up an altar?

Well, forget ALL of those books for this lesson. This lesson isn't about following tradition. It's about using your own sentiments and spiritual instincts to come up with a personal arrangement.

Now, the first point I'd like to make is that while it's nice to have statues of the Deity you are honoring. It's not exactly essential. But, what you do need is something that reminds you of them. Something that makes you mindful of them. And let's face it. Not everyone can afford statues.

So, some good substitutes are items like personal trinkets infused with their energy. Or perhaps a picture of them at the Altar. Maybe even a simple magical symbol that represents them. Above all, something personal to you.

Now, the location of the deity representation. Just put it where you feel it fits. As for the rest of the altar. Take space into account and what items you have to work with.

Try to go with some themes if you have a lack of ideas. For instance, is male and female duality important to you? Find something to symbolize both sides. Just like yin and yang.

Is there a personal trinket of yours you feel fits on the alter but you don't know why? Try it out and see how it feels.

That's really all there is to it. A little creativity is all you need. Just play around with the various designs in your mind.

For those already creative and personal about their altars. This lesson really won't hold anything of use. It's really that simple.

BUT, it is also something that can make all the difference during meditation and rituals. If the altar is a personal sacred place to you.

Some great places to go to get ideas are Goodwill, any thrift stores. It's fun to just wander around and see what might catch your eyes. Iv'e gotten a lot of really cool things for my altar from thrift stores. 3nodding

Oh yes, most definitely. Break out of the box and don't think of just going to witchcraft stores. Look around and see what catches your eye. Most definitely.

I have one of those giant weekend market places down the street from me and they used to have a pagan store in there. But it was rather expensive. However, there was other stores around that sold cheap baskets and trunks and other such things that you could use if you wanted. A little basket or jar for herbs looks nice on your altar and can be useful.

Whenever I decide to decorate my altar for a Sabbat, I get fresh herbs. You can get fresh herbs really cheap at your local grocery store. I hate buying herbs at a pagan store, they're over priced.

One of the chain grocery stores around where I live (Giant) sells herb plants. My basil I got from them grew really well.

I like to grow my own herbs, personally. You can get the seeds, or an herb kit that comes with everything already set up. Herbs are something one can easily grow inside in small pots. That's another thing I plan to have in my sacred space room, my own herbs. I'll put a big shelf with no backing against one of the windows.
