Wolf Henry! Yeah, that just about sums up this episode apart from the little bit of plot progress we got with the overarching season story. It was all about Henry being a HAP, as he calls it. A highly-accelerated protean. Not much other substance to that story arc. I got more out of the fun interaction between Tesla and Helen as they figured out the secrets of Steampunkland.
The most important thing I noticed about the episodic story arc, aside from the glaringly obvious romance setup, was that they changed the werewolf CGI design from season 1, which was the only other time we saw it. As you'll remember, Henry was 100% normal human in the original web series (and why they changed that is beyond me, but it ended up working). When they revealed in the TV series that he was something like a werewolf at the very least, he was beyond shy about it. He didn't want anyone to know and he even went to Helen about getting surgery to keep himself from changing. In the end, his heightened sense of smell was his abnormality's saving grace and in the season finale of season 1 he was able to gain control over his change. That's all well and good, but he's apparently made a total 180 behind the scenes since that time. I could work with a 90, but 180 is too much. There's also that original point I brought up: Henry's wolf self looks different. In season 1 we had a huge, mostly hairless wolf-like thing. In this episode we have something more akin to the earliest Wolfman movies; an ape-like werewolf. The hell? Speaking of horror movies, wasn't that music in the basement scene supremely cliched? I was waiting for Dane Cook to pop out and make fun of it.
The best part of this episode was, as already said, everything between Helen and Tesla. He's still chasing her and she's still blowing him off, not just because her last experience with a member of the Five was so crappy, but because he's bent on world domination and making her his queen. Not Helen's cup of tea. Still, Tesla won't let it go and that's what makes them great in a scene. Here they are trying to solve this ancient riddle and Tesla's making passes at Helen and jabs at everybody else (his "Booty and the Beast" line, for example, in reference to Kate and Bigfoot). He can't pronounce Latin worth a damn (though I think that was bad coaching to blame there. The word "pater" has an "ah" sound in it, not an "ey" sound), but when it comes to issues with EM waves, he's your guy. I did like the additional detail that the builders of this mysterious steampunk civilization had a grudge against vampires. The proverbial rabbit hole with those guys just keeps getting deeper, along with the tunnel network Helen and Tesla were finally able to access the map for. Also, just in closing, I smiled at the Harry Potter reference. Is there a book out there that the Sanctuarians haven't read?
