PRESS RELEASE
Samatha Watson, 16 years old, of St. Albans has won the Patchwork Art Contest. Samatha’s drawing was selected from 100 entries to be featured as the next Patchwork marketing piece. Her drawing of a young person in despair sitting on a Patchwork quilt on the sidewalk drew praise from teenagers who saw it and the DAYMARK Board of Directors.
Patchwork, a DAYMARK program, is a shelter for young people in trouble. Patchwork offers counseling on the telephone or in person, food, clothing, shelter, and other services in the Patchwork facility and on the streets of Charleston.
The agency launched an art contest at the beginning of the school year asking middle school and high school students to come up with a marketing piece that they and their friends would respond to if they were in trouble. The agency contacted art teachers and asked them to encourage their students to enter. Patchwork’s Street Outreach Team visited some of the schools and talked to the youth about Patchwork and its services.
Samatha was recognized at the November meeting of the DAYMARK Board of Directors and presented with gift cards to Art Emporium, Taylor Books, The Paintbrush Studio, and The Fountain Hobby Shop. Her family was there to support her and congratulate her as well.
DAYMARK Board of Directors Chairperson Nikki Moses asked Samatha how she came up with her winning idea. She said, “I just started doodling.” Samatha says that she hopes “art is in her future.”
