Well, not the right to life, at least.
http://deathpenaltynews.blogspot.com/2010/11/un-deletes-gay-reference-from-anti.html
So as it turns out, homosexuality isn't just a punishable crime, it's also fine if it's punished by execution... Well, to the UN it is.
Wasn't this organization supposed to make sure such violations don't take place? How could it have ever come to this? The fact they could pull it off in the UN has made it lose all credibility if you're asking me.

-sigh-
I had interests in working as a translator for the UN, but if they think this way about homosexuals, I'm not sure I want to be involved with them in the future anymore. I'm not for or against homosexuality (I'm at a neutral and indifferent standpoint on that issue), but I don't think it's right that they would punish those who are homosexual.

Well you have to look at it from a global standpoint. The UN isn't made entirely of western nations, which are more open to change like homosexuality. As it said in that article, most of the votes were from African and Middle Eastern countries. It's really a shame that the UN is prejudiced against gays, but if you were to look at it from the standpoint of a Middle Eastern (note: I know nothing about Middle Eastern culture so idk if it's like this or not) that was raised to think that gays deserve death, you'd be feeling the same way if the UN didn't change. If I'm understanding it right the UN is allowing executions based on sexuality, but it's not like countries have to execute gays. If the UN didn't bend to reforms like this it would be prevalently western which would make it lose all credibility to me, and the other half of the world.
Well that's what I think at least. Not that I support their decision, but I can see how it's been accepted. I'm pro-gay btw.

It's super disappointing. There's still quite a few countries when you can be murdered for being queer (not a derogatory term; we use it positive to be inclusive of our diversity).
Have you heard about what's going on in Uganda? Ugh... I would have loved to work in the UN, but no...
I hear the European Union pays translators really well! My Step-mum say they pay around £200,000 a year! Nearly CAD 325,000! FRIG!
There's a lot we still have to do to be accepted. In Canada, we still have issues... men who have sex with men aren't allowed to donate blood or organs.
What really gets my goat, is that a lot of places used to be queer-friendly, until the Religious Europeans forced their beliefs on them and made them incredibly conservative... Look at the Philippines now... Or was it Indonesia :S One of them is in intense poverty, and yet their government says they aren't allowed to use contraception. They have nothing and are forced to keep having children...

I'm not Amero-centric, but I think this is absolutely unacceptable! I feel as if some countries still have a long way to go before they have full and working equality. There are STILL many countries that think women are merely baby-making machines, domestic slaves, and objects, but the UN includes their rights. Why can't we do that for queer people? Who cares whether or not someone doesn't believe it's right? Tb100%h, religion should not be political, things tend to go very wrong when that happens. The UN is suppose to be advocating human rights and not bending that mission because a couple of countries disagree with complete equality for everyone.

The UN isn't there to get opinions of people heard, it's there to protect human rights, all humans. All atrocities are justified in the eyes of those who commit them. The fact someone has a certain view regarding a certain group doesn't make violation of human rights justified, and the UN was first established for THAT reason. The fact such a decision could have passed just means that the UN isn't doing its job. I understand where you're coming from and I do realize that there is cultural diversity, but when is it cultural diversity, and when is it just tyrants doing their will? If we can't enforce human rights because they should apply due to "cultural diversity", why do we even need the UN?

Oh wow, I'm going to take a look into a career at the European Union! surprised I was also told you look into minority languages in Europe because, while they do need a lot of translators, you're more attractive speaking a language that they need. There's a huge amount of them, too! I only know some of the many languages... Italy has: Sardu Friulian Ladin Venetian Bolgnoese Piemontese Sicilianu Napulitan Swizterland: Romansch France: Occitan Gascon Spain: Catalan Leonese Basque Portugal: Galician There's more in each of those countries, and other ones. If you're taking an Romance languages or European ones, it'd be a great asset to have any of those!
