So basicly i'm in a german class here in a public AMERICAN school.
I love the class I love the language (It's German 1)
But on 15/11/10 (Day/Month/Year) my teacher pulled out some packets each with like 15 CHRISTMAS carrols each saying we will have to learn then, sing them, and will be graded upon them.
Now that I have told my mom I'm atheist I'm not afraid to go all the way to the principal and request that I do not have to be graded upon them.
I don't mind if the class sings this s**t, but don't expect me to SING it.

What are all of your opinions on this?
Will I be allowed to do what I wish and not sing?
Will I get in trouble if I don't sing more then likely?
AND
Should she (the teacher) be able to grade us on how "Well" (Yes she is going to she made it very clear) we sing and if we sing Christmas Carrols?

well I think it really depends.
If there like explicitly christian chrismas carols then you shouldn't have to sing them. If it's like frosty the snowman and what not then you shouldn't have a problem with them.

maybe you could insist that if there going to sing christan songs then they should sing atheist songs and jewish songs and muslim songs and hindu songs and greek songs and pink unicorn songs and ect ect.

I don't all about what the christmas carrols are but be careful about new found freedom syndrome.

and yes you will probally get in trouble if you don't sing.

Singing songs about religious deities are [a bit] different than believing in said deity. For instance, I love the song "Balmung" by the band "Balmung", but I don't believe that the sword was used by Sigurd to slay the dragon Fafnir. And like when you sing "Frosty the Snowman", I'm sure you don't actually believe a snowman became animated from a magical top-hat.

"maybe you could insist that if there going to sing christan songs then they should sing atheist songs and jewish songs and muslim songs and hindu songs and greek songs and pink unicorn songs and ect ect."
I agree with this proposal.

I say relax. You're not being asked to belive in them, just sing them.

I even still go to mass occasionally. It makes the family happy, and it doesn't hurt me cos I don't believe in it. *shrug* what harm can it do if you just sing them?

Only a two of them I'll sing without major problems.

I sent a thing in to see my counselor on wendseday still haven't talked to him, I'm going to send another in on monday and get tell him I don't like the idea of it and such.

Actually, teachers have to discuss this. And if your graded on it, thats total s**t. For a christmas concert we had to sing christian songs and because i was atheist, my parents requested i sing the less religious songs...and i only got to sing one! and we were graded...and i sat backstageD:<

We had to do the same in my spanish class. i refused to sing because they were strictly christain but i didnt get graded on it.

I can understand your predicament and i really hope something is done about it because christianity is pushed really hard on us, by other students, parents, and even the teachers and staff. Have you considered talking to your teacher and telling her it would be agianst your non-religion or offensive to sing those songs?

I dunno, I'm a bit blasé when it comes to religious music. As long as it's good, I mean.

I vote we burn all Christmas songs that have to do with religion, unless the religion is Pagan, then it is OK, since Christmas now is more Pagan than anything else. If your going to sing a song on a holiday that has to do with religion then the religion better be the right one.

User Image> Just deal with it. The teacher is grading you on your ability to sing not what you believe in. I would not give two shits and just sing it. If some one asked me about weather or not I believed or liked a certain part of it I would say no.
