The Ahmeyed Forest...XXXXXX

To be perfectly honest, most of the forest's contents lie a mystery behind the seemingly endless expanse of green trees and plants. Things change; paths become overgrown, ruins disappear and reappear. The world contained in Ahmeyed is constantly shifting with time, there has never truly been an accurate map of it because of this.
It is very, very easy to get lost in this transforming maze the further you venture into it. This forest has been notorious for losing its travelers, their bodies never to be found again. Many theories have been tested to find out the main cause of these disappearances, yet none have ever been proven. The only way to visit Ahmeyed and not run the risk of getting lost is to visit in the daytime, stay around the border, and never, ever go so far into it that you can't see the exit to the outside.
Much Pasaidian folklore has stemmed from this forest, due to its taunting mystery and allure. Yet, there have been so many stories created and so many disappearances that have occurred, no one really knows which story is true or fake anymore.

Here is a list of landmarks located in the Ahmeyed Forest:
- The Saile Cemetery: Commemorating the lives lost at sea in 496. Located a tad further into the forest out of sight. If you follow the path, though, it's very easy to find, and practically impossible to get lost from there unless you purposefully go farther into the forest.
- Ruins 1: Supposedly a type of temple according to old, ancient blocks of text engraved in stones. Location unknown.
- Ruins 2: Rumored to be a marker for a healing fountain. Location unknown.
- Clearing 1: Very close to Cannaire. Like the Cemetery, it is out of sight unless you follow the path to it. Mainly just a large, grassy space. Villagers from Cannaire, mainly teenagers, like to hold dances or parties there in the nighttime.
- Order Camp 1: A campsite for members of The Order to use freely as they travel across the country.

He had bid goodbye to his uncle just before sunset. Unburdened of his stock of furs and other merchandise, he could move much more easily in the woods of his childhood. The village this time of year was a madhouse and he detested it, but it was good for business. At least it was better now that a couple of people he disliked had moved away, or so he'd heard.

Batlyn had said the wolves were numerous and hale this year. He very much desired some light summer furs. They would be very much the fashion when autumn painted the land and crisp breezes wanted something between the uncloaked days of warmth and the dead of winter.

"Are you sure you want to be hunting on the eve of the Peace, eh? Smelling like blood on the day of the festival?" He smiled at the memory of his uncle's raised eyebrows.

"Is that any different than other days? Put the hare on the smoker, Uncle. I will return soon."

His boots fell still and, for a moment, his pale eyes scanned the roof of leaves above him. So thick he could not see even one star. He did not need to see. He could feel them out there in the dark. Hungry but not underfed. He was humming to himself now. They were about small game now. Deer were too strong to take in summer, more often than not. They would wait until food was not so plentiful. Words joined his tune.

Godspeed, you black king of yonder wood.
O moon-soul, haunting the trees.
Take you the fat meats, tender and good,
Before all the world doth freeze...

The one on point, hooking around to flush game for his fellows, strayed from his course. Furry ears pricked at the sound that should not be... not here. Indecision.

Bare your fangs for scarlet kiss
Star and moon are hid tonight
Take the lady by the wrists
As you'd not in the broad daylight...

The wood of the trees around him seemed to ricochet the vibrations of his voice, giving it an eerie cast. He could feel the animal approach, hear it now. It seemed to pace aimlessly, slowly getting closer, as if it were trying to circle him, then forgot what it was doing.

O stay, no sleep in darkness keep.
Bury now your lover deep...

It was growling at him now. Just yards away. He could feel the pulse of its heart, the warmth of its breath. Muscles and sinews tightened.

All the sorrows love can bring,
Leave them now with me my king...

The animal lunged suddenly. He moved to the side and threw his arms around the warm furry body. A flash of steel. His long knife found thick arteries and hot, red life gushed over his hands and down his arm. The weight of the dying wolf's fall bore him to the ground. He knelt quietly at its side, shuddering and panting, his hand on its side as it breathed its last.

Aerro swiftly led a curious Aisling deeper and deeper into the forest, the greenery of Ahmeyed slowly closing in on them until they were disguised behind the overgrown trees and plants. She was growing a little skeptical of the whole thing- the man seemed sketchier and sketchier by the moment. Aisling knew how to defend herself, though, as was mentioned earlier. This man was around her size, too- she would definitely stand a fighting chance against him.
A chill ran down the girl's back as she thought she heard a faint echo of a man's voice sweetly singing an unnerving tune. She picked up 'haunting the trees' and 'bury now your lover deep.' Her gaze turned to Aerro, whom she could tell heard the song as well. His eyes darted back and forth as he guided her to his campsite.

"We're here, Aisling."
Aisling and Aerro approached a clearing in the forest, where a tiny fire crackled quietly in the center. Around five to seven tents were set up towards the back, and sitting around this campfire were around twenty other people with the same dark cloaks. All their hoods were pulled down, though, revealing normal faces.
"Brothers, sisters, I happily introduce young Miss Aisling to you all. I hope you treat her with respect, as she is interested in joining our humble organization."
They all said their hellos and welcomes and whatnot before Aerro led her to the fireside, plopping down onto the dirt and motioning for her to sit beside him.

Aisling was constantly glancing around at all the faces. These are the faces she could possibly become familiar with- if she were to join this mysterious "Order," of course.
She smoothed out her sea green dress, adjusting one of her boots so the dagger was hidden further inside. Oddly enough, having them in there wasn't uncomfortable in any sort of way. The boots were specially made for them; there was padding around the dagger so it didn't accidentally poke her or scratch her in any sort of way. It was kind of nice, and a pretty smart idea at that.
Aisling blinked twice, pushing a lock of wavy blonde hair away from her face. "It's nice to meet you all. So tell me, guys. What's this lovely Order that you are all a part of? ..."

After sitting for awhile with the departing wolf, he took out soft bindings of suede and wrapped them around its legs. He tied down the tail and bound the mouth closed so that nothing would flop around in an undignified way while he carried it. Lastly, he carefully shut the animal's eyes.

He turned the furry body upside down and set it over his shoulder so that the blood could begin to drain out of the mouth and death wound. Wolf meat was not really a favourite in Cannaire but it sold well enough in pies, stews and chili. Byakuren, himself was rather fond of it.

Now that is attention was not buried in his work, his senses alarmed him with the detection of fire. Oh holy stars no, the forest is dry... if it has caught... He stopped walking. No. This was small. He sniffed again. Food? Perhaps. People, definitely. If it was another hunting party, he was not unhappy about the competition, but he did need to apprise them of his presence unless he wanted to be shot while going about his business. Best find out what their game and hunting region is going to be so we can avoid each other.

He whistled a folk-tune, loudly enough that he would not be mistaken for an animal wandering into camp. Shortly, he could see the firelight winking in the trees. A little large for a hunting party, he thought. Big game? Or perhaps these are more of those fools that come around from time to time, trying to find and map out the old ruins. He drew close to the camp, still whistling, until he could catch one of the camper's eyes and hail them.

As Aerro was about to explain to Aisling what The Order was all about- he spotted the approaching stranger.

He stood up, examining the fellow. Was that a wolf he had slung around his shoulder? "Sir, what are you doing here?" Aerro came closer to the man, standing in front of the rest of the group around the fire watching the newcomer with curious eyes.
Aisling had seen this man around. It was Cannaire, after all- everyone knew everyone. She didn't know him well, though; hell, she didn't even know his name. All she knew was he was a hunter that kept to himself and only came to the docks to barter.
The girl considered greeting him, but she didn't know if he'd give her an odd look or not. They'd never actually had a full conversation before. So she scooched a little closer to the fire, stretching her arms out and warming up her cold hands.

Byakuren stared at him for a long moment without saying anything, his face blank. He turned his face towards the wolf slung over his shoulder.

"Taking my man for a walk. Isn't he handsome?" He smiled. It was a carefully sculpted facial expression.

"Sincerely though, I hunt these woods on and off. I thought you some fellow hunters and wanted to know your game and what parts of the wood you mean to hunt. I'd not want to be shot while running down my prey." He looked around the camp. "Robes are terrible for hunting." He shook his head. He motion smeared blood across his cheek but he didn't seem to notice.

"Your doings are your dealings, not mine. Only I see you are not set for a long stay. We have a large surplus of meats this time of year and not all will be eaten at the festival. I would rather them go to fine folk like you, rather than spoil in the summer's heat. Would you take it amiss if I offered some of our stores to you and yours? My uncle lives not far from here."

He fell silent, his peace-offering made. It was good hospitality to share with outsiders and the truth was, they really did need to clear out some space in their cold cellar. Even chilling charms did not solve everything indefinitely.

Aerro's colder glare softened at Byakuren's first comment, and a smile formed on his lips. Aisling couldn't help but laugh aloud at his reply. "Very gorgeous indeed." She said to him, standing up and approaching the two. "Aerro, this man is from my village. He poses no threat, if that is what you are worried about."

Aerro listened to Byakuren's offer and laughed lightly. He thought they were hunters. "My friend, we are no hunters." Perhaps explaining to this fellow what they were might convince him to join. "We are The Order, an underground organization devoted to changing Pasaid for the better." Aerro smiled confidently. "This young lady, Aisling, is interested in joining. Would you, and your significant other of course," he motioned towards the wolf, "like to listen to what we're about?"

He had not noticed Aisling until she came forward and spoke up. In truth, if she had not recognized him, he would not have known she was from Cannaire. It made sense though. He had not traded with her before in any large quantity and made no effort to remember. Some business owners did well on friendliness and attention to the customer but that was simply not his way. He did well on superior quality of goods, priced fairly. He did not haggle or flatter or tell half-truths about his merchandise. He also never changed his prices, even in especially hard or bountiful years which had earned him trouble in the past with other skinners.

Byakuren nodded his head at the proposal. He'd heard the Order mentioned once or twice on his travels but never really paid attention to what was being said. He looked over the soft, rusty colored fur of the wolf over his shoulder. The reddish pelts always sold well. He was even more pleased with his find now that he saw it in the firelight.

"So you are hunters, but for manpower." He smiled again. "I will listen. Give me a moment. I must hang him up or he will spoil." He moved over to a nearby tree and made a couple quick knots in the leather bindings around a branch. With the wolf safely hung by his heels and draining into the grass, he moved back to the fire and seated himself. He still seemed to have no idea that he was soaked in blood. It was beginning to flake off where it had dried. Now, perhaps, Aisling could see the reason for his habitually dark and somber clothing. It would not show the stains.

"Speak at your leisure, good man," he said as he began to clean his knife on his trouser leg.

Life is nothing but mist.

Aerro led Byakuren and Aisling to the fireside, motioning for them to sit down as he did. "Now. The Order was established around 5 years ago, by our leader- Aryn Geordan. He is a man of great strength and power, and these traits served him well in recruiting others to aid him in his quest for change.
"The Order's members devote much of their time and money towards this cause- we know that in the end, though, it shall be worth it, for our eyes lie on the ultimate prize; the throne."

Aisling listened intently, curiosity growing until- wait, the throne?! They want to take over?! She began to grow even more skeptical than she was before- a tad nervous, even. Pasaid was functioning well under the Lorannes- she didn't see the need for such drastic change.
Yet she listened anyway.

"Our plan is to seize control and establish an oligarchy in Pasaid, composed of our leader, Aryn, along with other members of high ranking in The Order. At first, the idea seemed bleak to Aryn; a mere fantasy. But as our numbers grew, along with our sources of income," Aerro laughed a little. "This mere fantasy can come to a flourishing reality very soon."
Finally Aisling piped up. "And how might you go about taking the Lorannes out of power?"
A smile formed on Aerro's face, lit up by the flames crackling in the center. "By the only way we can truly get our voices heard. Violence."
What the hell did I get myself into.
"As I told you earlier, dear Aisling, we've established many other camps just like this one all across Pasaid. Each one is populated with at least ten members, and our members are free to travel from camp to camp, throwing in that element of adventure that you like, miss Aisling. These members will stop at nothing to show how powerful The Order really is- via our weapons, our strength, the fear we can strike in the hearts of our soon-to-be citizens."
"Not meaning to offend you, Aerro, but I haven't heard of any sort of violence caused by The Order before."
"We haven't unleashed our first plan, yet."
"And when might that happen?"
"Tomorrow."
This statement caused an eruption of cheers from the members. "Tomorrow, we are hitting the capitals of each region with a show no citizen shall ever forget." Aerro strolled over to a tent, reaching for something small and round inside. "Heard of these?" He messed around with the apple-sized sphere.

This made Aisling sick to her stomach. "Bombs." She managed to eke out. She didn't show her discomfort or complete horror, though- out of the fear of her own safety.
"Yep. And rather recently the ancient, weak bomb has been updated to something more compact- and more effective." More cheers came from the hooded men and women.
Tossing the bomb between his hands, Aerro approached Aisling and Byakuren. "Reuben Port. Abriene Castle Town. Trachtail. Orco. Dol Gabh. They'll be in ruins by the end of tomorrow. And It'd be an honor if you could join. Who knows? You might climb up the ranks and be a leader among us- a leader of Pasaid."

"It is the Festival of Peace tomorrow. While I am not going against your plans, I am thinking about my fellow citizens. Don't you think you should give them the holiday to have fun? It's the entire point of the Festival."
"And what better chance to strike than on a day like the Festival? The more fear the better. They won't know what hit them- and that will make them weaker, for they won't be prepared. Now, are you willing to join us in our quest for change?" Aerro offered his hand to Aisling, who stared at it for a long while before carefully formulating her response."
"I am sorry, Aerro." She stood up, smoothing out her dress. "I cannot do such a thing to my people. But we are friends, and I hope you know that. I do not betray a friend."
Aerro was surprisingly calmer than Aisling expected. Perhaps it was because of Byakuren. He was likely a much more valuable asset to their organization than she was. "Understandable. It is your decision, and we will not force you to change your mind. But know this, friend, if we find out you spilled the secrets of our plans to anyone, we will find you, and we will hunt you down and kill you. Got it?" He came close to Aisling. Uncomfortably close.
"I understand." Aisling replied confidently, with no hesitation nor fear in her tone or facial features. Inside, though, her heart was beating a mile a minute. "Please lead me back to Cannaire- my mother is waiting for me to help her at the inn."
"But of course, dear Aisling. I will be right back, this will only take a moment." He turned to the hooded member next to him. "Take it from here until I return.
They nodded, standing up and watching as they departed behind the curtain of the thick forest before approaching Byakuren. They pulled down their hood, revealing a young girl of around sixteen. "Now, you. Are you willing to join our Order in the quest for power?" She asked, voice high and somewhat tinny. "Or will you back out like the cowardly Aisling?" It was evident this girl didn't take rejection lightly. She was small and thin, though, and she understood she was no match against Byakuren.

Byakuren sat silently, his face unreadable throughout the explanation. Inwardly he was annoyed that Aisling kept interrupting the man while he was doing his job. He sat back, when Aerro had finished and his eyelids drooped until they were nearly closed. He was not bothered when Aerro moved to take Aisling back to the village. Any recruiter worth his salt understood the need for contemplation after being delivered such an offer.

Any recruiter except the little wench who addressed him. He opened his eyes slowly, and looked up at her. Not even the firelight could make his gaze feel warm. He stared at her until the silence began to cause her significant discomfort.

Leaving women in charge. You're going to Hell Aerro. In a pretty pink handbasket.

He rose to his feet slowly and walked to the tent Aerro had retrieved the bomb from and picked one up before anyone could move to stop him. The elf stared at the black sphere, examining the handiwork. Still, he said nothing. The revolutionaries seemed reluctant to physically persuade him to put the explosive down, for obvious reasons.

Byakuren turned around quickly and held out the bomb, showing it to the girl who had approached him.

"This will not do it," he said pointedly. "It is not enough." He turned to the rest of the cloaked men and women and walked over in front of them. "Which one of you understands good sense?" He began to pace back and forth still holding the bomb. "People are animals. You want to organize large groups of people? Understand the politics of the herd. The herd runs towards safety, always. Do this..." He held out the bomb, rather close to one of their faces. "Blow the city centers apart. Snap at their heels and watch them stampede. Then what? Where will they go?"

He shook his head and sighed, letting his hand fall to his side. "The people will hold tighter to their king. The devil they know. To change the direction of the herd you need a carrot and a stick. You have the stick." He looked down at the bomb. "Where is the carrot? What reason have they to join with you and do as you say except fear? Do you want change to happen quickly, or eventually? If you want it now, you need some carrot."

He handed the bomb over to the nearest man in a hooded robe. "Tell me about Aryn Geordan." Byakuren put his hands on his hips obviously expecting answers. "Tell me he is intelligent. Tell me he will wage a charismatic campaign. For, if I were him, I would not go this way. This is heavy-handed and clumsy. Assassinate his closest allies and sew mistrust among them. Spread rumor and conspiracy about the forces of the throne. Strengthen the mistrust of the king as it grows by blowing the life out of the cities. It is not enough to be strong if you consistently miss your target."

The hunter crossed his arms, canting his head to the side. "My uncle is a wise elf. He told me, things change, always be on the winning side if you can help it. Well, gentlemen, I will sell furs to whomever is left after your games are all played out. See that my business continues, that I am free to live my life as I will, and you will have my support. Destroy my business and I shall be upset. This does not take a scholar to discover."

"Now, speak of Aryn. Tell me why he will win."

Aerro returned with a neutral expression on his face, seeing the silent battle between the female member and Byakuren, then watched as he picked up one of their bombs and began ranting about the flaws in their plan. While Aerro normally disliked disagreement with the plans their leader had already laid out, Byakuren had a point. A rather good point.
He watched as the young girl stood up to stand up for Aryn. "He is a good man, and an intelligent one! He wants change for the better, and the people of Pasaid are too stubborn to see eye-to-eye, which is why we have to resort to violence. It's all about the monarchy, all about the Lorannes! They do nothing but sit on their thrones with their fancy jewelry playing babysitter to the rest of the country! They do nothing to fix the many wrongs this country has.
"Diohbell is a perfect example. The place is a COMPLETE waste of valuable space, and the kingdom does nothing to restore it! Aryn aims to bring it back from the ashes. And what of the meat shortage in Veidhlinn? Or the fact that Siohchan is a gold mine of artifacts waiting to be discovered. So much of Pasaid's history could be found, and the monarchs simply sit twiddling their thumbs and taking their sweet time about it.
"And that is why Aryn will win. Aryn is going to take action for the country. The Order will make change happen quickly, rather than letting our power lie dormant."
She slumped down by the fire exasperated, obviously out of breath.
PostPosted: Fri Feb 11, 2011 6:27 am

Byakuren stared at her for a long moment. Then, he began to laugh. "You do not have to convince me that you are right, wench. I already know that you are. Be as virtuous and valiant as you like. I do not care if you are good. I asked you: will you win?" He shook his head. "History is written by the victors. If you are victorious then you are righteous."

"All these changes you speak of can be accomplished with sufficient manpower. The king has squandered this manpower and you mean to snatch it out from under him and put it to good use. I still do not see how you will succeed."

He closed his eyes for a moment, as if in contemplation. "You will do this thing tomorrow and no one can stop you. You will panic the herd and they will run. But will they run to their king; the devil they know? Or in to your open arms? I have said to you that people are animals. You will see it shortly if you have not already. People have very, very short memories especially where politics are in play."

He opened his eyes and fixed them on a stack of wood neatly piled between two trees. He pointed at it. "If you came into camp and found that woodpile scattered all over the place, you would surely be annoyed for it took you some time to build. If you found me picking up the pieces of wood and stacking them neatly, you would think me a fine fellow, would you not? If you do not know that I kicked it over myself and I tell you that it was someone else, you will be aggrieved with the person I blame and pleased with me for being a good and helpful fellow."

"The people are animals, as I have said. They remember faces and actions. If that someone that I blamed comes along later and says 'nay, he lies! It was not I!' you will still remember I was here with you in your time of need helping you to set all in order and that he was not. Who will you believe? The one who helped you, of course." He shrugged. "I see potential in the order, but I know nothing of this Aryn save that he has won over your hearts. He must have some manner of charisma and he will do well among the people if only he has the intelligence to go along with this charm. I see what I think he is doing, but perhaps only because it is what I would do."

He walked around the fire slowly, his eyes on the tree branches above him as he remained deep in thought. "The best way to control a herd is a pincer movement. I see only one half of the pincer here." He gestured over at the tent containing the bombs. "I must be assured that the other half of the pincer will be there. If it is not, the pack runs in vain and the prey escapes."

He stopped in front of Aerro, eying him thoughtfully. "I cannot expect you to make a leap of faith and tell me everything before I have committed to you. That, in itself, would be foolish. But assuage my worries. Tell me that there is at least some plan to make the herd feel safer under the Order than in the king's stables where they are used to being. If you want to bring the people to heel, you cannot afford to be clumsy about it. You can make the herd run with fear, but you cannot call them to your side by the same means."

"How DARE you call me a wench, and how DARE you question our power! You aren't fit to even be in our presence, you-"
"Calm yourself." Aerro shot her a glare. She immediately sat down, head hanging. "I ask you kindly to please address the female members of The Order in a less insulting manner, especially since you might be working with them." He told Byakuren calmly, then took the bomb from his hands and gently placed it in the sack with the rest of them.
The man was right. Aerro certainly would not, and did not, express all information to this man. What Byakuren didn't see was the royal emblem engraved on the face of some of the bombs- some being the key word. This wasn't a demonstration of power- it was a setup. Foul play. It sent the people in a panic, thinking the royal family was trying to attack their own people, leaving them confused and outraged. The Order steps up and offers protection and the desperate citizens will come running into their arms. They reveal their campaign for change and they'll win over the people's hearts instantly.
Aryn Geordan, along with the rest of his organization, knew full well that the people felt safe under the power of the monarchy. If they simply blew everything to smithereens it'd be absolutely ridiculous. The entire country would be against them in attempt to destroy all of their hard work.
There was strategy to their seemingly mindless bombings.
He wouldn't give that out, though. If he did, and this Byakuren fellow happened to reject the idea and spread around the fact that it was a setup, they'd be ruined- revealed as not only a mindless, violent threat, but a lying and cheating one as well. "You are correct. We will not tell you everything. But we can reassure you that we have our ways of getting the citizens on our side."
PostPosted: Mon Feb 14, 2011 6:11 am

Byakuren snorted quietly and closed his eyes for a moment. He acknowledged neither the girl's indignant shouting nor Aerro's request to be polite. When he opened his eyes again, there was a grim smile on his face.

"Good. That is a blessing. I feared that you would be content to do harm without purpose." He held up a finger. "I am not against violence. Obviously, if I were, I could not make my bread." He displayed his hands, ruddy with dried blood, and it became clear that he knew full well how soiled his clothes and body were. He simply did not care.

"More to the point of what you want from me," he sat down near the fire, enjoying the warmth. "I am called Redshore. If you have need of me, ask for me by that name. I always ensure that at least one person knows where I am. In case I should die in the field, someone must know where to collect my bones." He smiled ruefully. "The Order... will I join right this very night? No. That would be ridiculous. It does show promise, though. I would like to help you."

Byakuren chuckled. "One government is the same as the next for the most part I think. You speak of new developments though, and this could be good for our nation. You also speak of the rule of the strong; the natural order. This is good as well. Those who work hard will rise. Those who are lazy will not. I, too, tire of lazy nobles though I do not desire their wealth or station."

"Still..." He folded his hands neatly in his lap and stared into the firelight. "You can, no doubt, see that I am a free elf. I run the field and forest with my beloved prey and take orders from no man. What a grave thing you must offer to persuade me out of such a blissful life!" He laughed as if it were a joke, but sobered quickly. "You have said that you have planned this for five years now. We shall see tomorrow if your machinations will work like a graceful dance. We shall see what the people begin to say when the dust settles. We shall see what the news from the other cities will be and that will take longer..." He canted his head to the side, staring absently at a glowing log.

"I will pledge supplies to your camp, while you stay here. You will not want for fresh meat, even while the chaos reigns. If all goes according to your plans and the people begin to turn their faces favorably towards the Order, we shall see what further use I can be to you. Does this answer satisfy you?" He looked at Aerro, waiting patiently for his response.

Aerro leaned against the nearest tree, listening to Byakuren's words. "Redshore." He repeated. He would be sure to remember it. It disheartened him a little to hear that the man wasn't joining immediately, but he still had hope nonetheless. When they rise to power- and Aerro had no doubt they would- "Redshore" would certainly be more attracted to the idea.
"I am glad we agree- this country needs change. Your worries of being restricted from your freedom may lay to rest- The Order is nomadic. We move all across the country. We've been to places in Pasaid one can only dream of visiting. If anything, The Order offers more freedom than what an ordinary being has. Nonetheless, we are grateful for your support, and we thank you for it." Aerro smiled slightly and nodded in his direction, coming closer to the fireside and sitting down next to the female member Byakuren had addressed as 'wench.' She was obviously still enraged about the whole situation, by the way her arms were folded tightly across her chest, lips drawn into a tight line, staring at the fire and nothing else.
