SourceQuote: Researchers at the McGill University Health Center in Montreal found that the administration of the synthetic agent URB579 exerted "potent anti-depressant-like effects" in animals by blocking the degradation of endocannabinoids. "This is the first time it has been shown that a drug that increases cannabinoids in the brain can improve your mood," lead investigator Gabriella Gobbi stated. I personally know several people who use marijuana as an anti-depressent, but can't get a perscription for medical marijuana. This may just help them to get it legally.

Hmmm, that's an interesting thing. One thing I personally would want to look into would be its treatment for manic depressent.
But that's good news on the psychological front.

I dont know whether I would suggest replacing anti-depressant medicine with cannabis or not. Its still largely unknown what chemicles are being produced and created when you burn or extract the chemicles in cannabis. While it's interesting, a lot more research has to be done.

I wouldn't suggest any wide-scale effort replace any established anti-depressant with weed, however, there are some people who would benefit from cannabis just as much as they would from anti depressants. For example, one of our close family friends smokes weed because he has an anger problem, and all of the medicine he was perscribed had some unfortunate side effects. Marijuana works just as well for him, though, and without the side effects. Like anything, it depends on the person, but it would be interesting to see where this leads.

THe only thing I could see was, well at least with me, Marijuana can increase the feeling of a mood. So if I get irritated while high I get EXTREMELY irritated. So I could never use it as a effective anti-depressant.

This may very well be true, since I've started the habit I've found myself calmer and more laidback. Plus if it'll help with the legalizing then thats all the better.

Yeah but being more laid back, and being depressed are a lot different. Depressed people can be happy, and be laid back and such. It's going to take A LOT of testing, federal grants, and such to get this proven in the United States. But it would probably help at least state governments to legalize the medicinal use of marijuana. Full scale 100% legalization of the drug will never happen.

I dunno about helping with depression, i have really bad depression. When im high im sometimes exceedingly over happy... and another time i got so depressed i almost killed myself (and i had a huge machette too at the time... don't mix weed and knives...) so honestly... i can't say it helps much with depression... it kinda just exagerates moods for me. it really depends on the person.

Thank you for the source.
I use it on an occasional basis to help with bouts of depression. And if I had used it when I started on anti-depressants it would have helped me through those 3-6 weeks where you are waiting for the meds to kick in.
Mostly I use it for acute anxiety and I had wondered if any doctor might ever recommend it for me instead of benzos for panic attacks.
My worry is that I'm going up and up and up on my anti-depressants over time as my body gets used to them (I started them in 199 cool . I maxed out on Paxil and started adding Wellbutrin. I've started two supplements: GABA and 5-HTP that might help my body learn to make seratonin instead of just using what the meds give me and perhaps saying, "Hey, now I can make even less!"

I take the anti-depressants Abillify and Lexapro. I smoke everyday too and my moods seem to be stabilized, but I wonder if it affects the way the weed effects me.
